Capacity: 4TB Style: HDD
Definitely a SMR drive. 4Tb 256mb cache 5400rpm. I installed around 1Tb of games in one day and it was noticeably slow. The drive needs idle time to re-write itself and is hidden by firmware. This drive frustrates me because it will give you 100-200Mb/s transfer speeds then drop to 50Mb/s Its just not consistent. I actually enjoy watching data transfers and this drive makes me crazy. Its better at reading than writing. It performs better than an external drive which was the purpose to replace using 4Tb external drives with a faster internal drive. This technically is faster as anticipated. 5400rpm is a little slow. 5900rpm seems a little better for a "chill" drive that isn't a system drive. With 128Gb SSDs as cheap as they are there is no reason to be booting off this drive. Its for videogame storage. Instead of 80Mb/s consistent like my external drive this one bounces around wildly between 50Mb/s and 150+ Mb/s It has a distinct not doing what you want it to feeling. I feel like the firmware needs to work with the OS instead of presenting itself like a normal HDD. Nothing against the technology I actually wish there was a SMR HDD driver so I could click a button and pause shingled mode, or set a larger CMR buffer while I have lots of empty space in line with my usage, etc. This tech will not age well. They need a SMR HDD Driver so you can select options. Until then stick with CMR. Letting the drive idle makes it faster while it does housekeeping algorithms. Just wish I knew what it was doing or had any control over it. I knew what was getting into at this price for 4 Terabytes but sheesh. ... show more

  • Large capacity in a good price. Should last for another 7-10 years.
Capacity: 4TB Style: HDD
In short: I’m an IT guy and I find this drive highly recommended for local storage at home. I have many Barracuda Seagate disks of an old models and very happy with their performance and durability and they serve me for years… If you don’t like the idea of storing your precious data in the cloud (safe and sound as it may seem) then managing a local storage is the way to go. And these Barracuda Segate 4TB drives are great for that purpose as they have enough capacity for most users while their price tag is affordable. Keep in mind that having local disks require maintenance, and that hard drives do fail when they wear out – it’s not IF they fail but more of WHEN, as they all die eventually; even the enterprise level ones. So if you consider the route of a local storage \ backup server then you’d better make a backup plan in advanced for redundancy – if you only need 1 drive for your data then buy 2 drives. If you need 2 drives then go with 4. And so on… The rule is to always have an exact copy of your data in 2 separate (physical) places, either by manual copying between disks, or for the advanced users between us to setting up a RAID 1 array for automatic clone (mirror) of one disk to the other; even if it costs somewhat more (if not doubled) at first, in the long run when one of your precious disks fail you’d be very happy that you had a backup. So besides of the loss of the actual disk, your data is safe and sound since it is stored on the second disk you aimed in advanced for this very scenario. And in such scenario it’s a good time to go shopping right away for a new drive to replace the one that failed, since you no longer have redundancy once one had failed. And when it arrives don’t challenge your fate and waste time - go ahead and copy all your data from the backup drive to it to have redundancy once again. My own story and experience: I have many Barracuda Seagate disks. About 10 actually. From my experience with mechanical drives and with Seagate brand in particular is that they *last for about 7-10 years. And when we speak on mechanical hard drives it's quite good. I had an old Seagate disk I stored data on, which was about 7-10 years old, and it failed about 2 weeks ago. I'm very glad that I spent some extra when I bought it and purchased a second one to serve me as a backup. So besides of the actual disk that died I didn't lose any data. This one came to replace it and I’m writing this review while it copies my data from the backup drive. I trust that it will give me another 7-10 years of quiet before it fails too. I'd recommend to check your disks health every now and then and to pay attention for any "clicking" sound from your computer case - even after my rich experience as an IT guy I fell for that very scenario because I was too busy to open my computer case and check where the clicking sound had come from, and thought that it's just from a dying fan... If I was paying more attention and take responsibility I'd probably replaced the disk before it finally died. There are many free tools out there that you can use to check your drives health and to let you know in advanced when a disk shows bad signs and needs a replacement. I'm using CrystalDiskInfo and I set it to launch at startup. So every time I restart my machine it pops-up and shows the actual disks health. *Hard drives will last depending on the user's usage. If you're only storing files on them for accessing later then they will more likely last longer. On the other hand if it's your "scratch disk" for video editing or you create and delete huge amount of data on it on a daily basis and the drive is under a heavy load then it may last less. It also depends on the environment the hard drive is located and the airflow in your computer case. Here are some tips as an IT guy: carefully clean your computer case interior from dust with air spray cans or oil-free dental compressor every 3-4 months. Make sure all fans in your case are working correctly – ventilated computer case will make your entire system and disks to last longer and to perform better; computers don’t like heat. Don’t keep computers in cabinets that have no airflow from the front and back. Don’t force shutdown your computer by holding the power switch unless it’s your last result (if let’s say it hanged or crashed). If you take these tips into consideration then your hard drives will last longer. ... show more

  • Excellent hard drive, just don't forget to format it
Capacity: 4TB Style: HDD
Bought this to replace a ten year old 1tb hard drive that only just started failing in the past few weeks, and installation was a breeze, product came carefully packed and secured in a tiny, tiny box my cat loves to try and sit in, despite barely being able to get her rump and feet in it at the same time. Only, very minor, complaint is that the hard drive doesn't arrive pre-formatted, which I didn't realize initially, so you have to have a LITTLE knowledge or a guide on how to format a drive via your operating system. Once I got that done, I was able to start transferring data over no problem. Drive is fast enough for my purposes, which is mostly storing digital art files. It's a solid product thus far, will update if I encounter issues with it down the line. ... show more

  • As described. Big as of 2022, used for backups.
Capacity: 2TB Style: HDD
As described. I use this for backups, and I keep it in a double dock. I don't think an SSD this size would be affordable, a year or two ago, but if they really I wouldn't mind by backup drive being on all the time. Now, I suppose most people don't worry but I don't like it spinning 24/7 when I only back up once a week. or even once a day. An SSD wouldn't spin itself to death. OTOH, I have an SSD and HDD in my computer and it's on 24/7. ... show more

  • Slow to start but steady when being used
Capacity: 2TB Style: HDD
I was hoping this hdd would be able to be used as a bootup drive. Maybe by using with an external docking station, this drive takes so long when cokd bootung that the computer motherboard does not read it. I have to reboot several times before I can even see the drive showing up in the setup. Once it gets seen, the drive reads and writes fairly quickly. I was not expecting speeds to match a SSD but is fast enough. The drive does slow down when getting hot but that is normal, I have a nice cooling fan to help keep it cool when being used. ... show more

Capacity: 2TB Style: HDD
Thats right..6 buys..have replaced all my old HD with these speedy HDs..not SSD speed but fast for an HD..dont run hot and bc of failure rate of SSD use the speed as a scheduled daily incremental backup..plan to buy more..have built computers since 1980s and this is a great buy

  • Buying it for a second time
Capacity: 2TB Style: HDD
This drive has served me well, and now I need more storage so I'm buying a second one. Obviously and expectedly slower than an SSD, but there is no surprise there. Decently fast for a hard drive, and at a good price. Would recommend.
