Description

From basic mathematical and physical formulas that govern much of our world to the components of matter; from the structure of the cosmos to that of the human body-the discoveries of scientists over the last millennium have been remarkable. Sciencia gathers together Useful Mathematical and Physical Formulae, Q.E.D, Essential Elements, Evolution, The Human Body, and The Compact Cosmos, six elegant and insightful short volumes spanning the realms of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, evolution, and astronomy, offering invaluable information to today's readers. Lavishly illustrated with engravings, woodcuts, and original drawings and diagrams, Sciencia will inspire readers of all ages to take an interest in the interconnected knowledge of the modern sciences. Beautifully produced in thirteen different colors of ink, Sciencia is an essential reference and an elegant gift. Wooden Books was founded in 1999 by designer John Martineau near Hay-on-Wye. The aim was to produce a beautiful series of recycled books based on the classical philosophies, arts and sciences. Using the Beatrix Potter formula of text facing picture pages, and old-styles fonts, along with hand-drawn illustrations and 19th century engravings, the books are designed not to date. Small but stuffed with information. Eco friendly and educational. Big ideas in a tiny space. There are over 1,000,000 Wooden Books now in print worldwide and growing. Read more

  • Not many are put together like this book.
Format: Hardcover
It contains short and concise explanations of natural events, forces, and environments that humans can observe empirically. Formulas are included along with explanations of their functions. The illustrations are very nice, but they tend to be a bit "cute" in some places, and there were a few times that I encountered over-simplified images that left out important details that will lead to misinformation, though this was very rare, probably one in five or so. There's not much like this out there. If the illustrations that were lacking could be cleaned up/redone in a better manner, I'd have no problem with this book. I haven't the heart to give it a four though, as it's very useful a guide. I'd recommend this to anyone. tl:dr ? It's around 400 pages of beautiful, wonderful natural science and math. :) ... show more

  • I like it
Format: Hardcover
My son loves this book. I really like the quality, the information on each topic is short but precise, urges you to investigate more.

  • A little bit of everything in one book!
Format: Hardcover
This is a great book with a little bit of everything. I really like the way the book is organized, and I can read about just a topic or two, and sit for a longer read. It has great coverage with interesting topic, it's well written, and is bound well. The cover is beautiful. The photo doesn't do it justice. But better still it's contents are great. ... show more

  • Great read!
Format: Hardcover
My 14 year old really wanted this for Christmas. He found it in a big chain book store and I refused to pay that price for it. So, I ordered it from amazon and we were very pleased with it. The content is fascinating and organized in a manner that is easily understood. Definitely a recommendation for anyone wanting to expand their limited knowledge in the science department! ... show more

  • Summarizes every topic on two pages, one for text and one page of graphic illustrations.
Format: Hardcover
Concise. There was one mistake, however; they identified the group II Alkaline Earth Metals on the Periodic Table as Rare Earth Elements.

  • The coolest book I own
Format: Hardcover
Without a doubt, this book begs to be read. In fact, I bought it for a friend and he couldn't put it down. There is a plethora of essential knowledge in here. I wish I would have read this book when I was around 15 or so. It would have definitely helped give me a bit of a better grasp in my engineering/physics/math/science/biology/chemistry classes. ... show more

  • I love this!
Format: Hardcover
I bought this as a gift for a friend I recently inducted into the world of engineering. I wanted to read it before I sent it off, and wow... I really need to get my own. Since I was old enough to bike to my hometown's university bookstore, I have LOVED Wooden Books; the sames goes nearly 10 years later. This is a straight reprinting of 6 books rebound into one volume, all which would be ~$10 each: 1) QED 2) Useful Mathematical & Physical Formulae 3) Essential Elements 4) Evolution 5) The Human Body 6) The Compact Cosmos How could you do better for $12? I'm getting a copy of Quadrivium too. So should you. ... show more

  • Fascinating, and accessible
Format: Hardcover
This is great for anyone who wants to get a taste for some various mathematic concepts without going to deeply into any of them. You can find the one that inspires you and find further reading elsewhere. Very cool sketches too, fun to read
