Description

Capture the limitless power of the sun to trickle charge your vehicle’s 12V battery with Schumacher’s SP-400 4.8W Solar Battery Maintainer. A solar power battery maintainer ensures a healthy, fully charged battery wherever you are, without the need for an electrical outlet or battery pack. Ideal for extending the battery life of 12V lead-acid batteries, the SP-400 solar battery maintainer can be used to maintain the battery of your motorcycle, snowmobile, ATV, boat, car, truck, RV, or other vehicle. Employing amorphous solar technology, the SP-400 even works in cloudy conditions and built-in water resistance means a stray rain shower won’t damage the unit. There are two ways to hook-up the SP-400 to your vehicle battery. Use the battery clips to connect it directly to your battery or plug the 12V plug into your vehicle’s 12V DC accessory outlet. The Schumacher SPC-7A Charge Controller is recommended for extra overcharge protection (sold separately).

  • Solar panel intended for charging car batterys 12v
Schumacher is an old name in automotive gadgets and thus I would expect a nice product if their name is on it. They make two sizes of solar panel a smaller one that puts out less wattage and this one. For the price difference I'd get the larger panel since it should do better on less than full sun days, the larger panel should be able to make more juice on a cloudy day than the smaller one just because of the size. Be aware you should also invest in the controller SP7A if your solar charger will be running unattended for long periods. The controller prevents discharge and overcharge situations if you leave it unattended for long periods. You may also want their cable extender if you need to place the solar panel any distance from the vehicle to catch the sun or prevent theft. I'm lucky that my house faces the optimum compass direction for solar panels but the longer cables give you quite a lot of leeway in where to place the panel. I will probably eventually have the panel mounted on a pole or to the side of my roof to keep the local dirtbags that steal anything that isn't nailed down from taking it but for now I've got a camera aimed at it to keep everyone honest. I haven't had much need to use it yet but I'll be retiring my gas vehicle soon and it will get much more use at that point. If you don't have convenient electrical outlets outside a setup like this will keep your battery charged as long as you get enough sun during the daylight hours. Update: have had this for quite awhile never needed it up til now a year later. I set the panel against the windshield of the vehicle facing the house so hopefully the casual neighborhood wandering sticky fingers wouldn't see it. I am using the optional controller gadget. My only small complaint has to do with the actual battery clamps, the cables need to be longer between the clamps. They recommend connecting Positive terminal (on a negative ground USA vehicle) and connecting negative to the vehicle frame but the length of the wire between the connectors is not long enough to let me connect this way I had to connect to the battery terminals. I like the connectors they use, if I look around probably won't be too hard to find clamps with the same connector but longer cables and just substitute those or even make my own set is another possibility. They recommend connecting the solar panel last so make your battery connections with the panel not connected then place your panel and run your cables and then lastly make the connection to the panel. When you connect the panel the green charge light on the controller should activate. There is an extra connector for a second "load" which I'm not using. I had a problem with my outdoor outlet needing to be fixed so I pulled this out of the drawer until such time as I can get that outlet repaired. One last note: be aware this likely won't "improve" the charge on a large battery it will only prevent it from going lower due to things like the car security system. It's getting towards winter here and we generally have less than full sunny days so the battery charge is never improving it's just not going down from the draw of the security system which is good enough until I can get my outlet repaired and plug in a proper tender/float charger once again. I did find a better set of clamps with longer cables and the same sort of plug, be aware that not every product wires the same way even if it's the same connector it may swap the polarity, most seem to include a polarity swapper if you should need to use it. I'm hoping that clamping negative to the engine block will improve the charge to the battery a little bit. I have one of those remote bluetooth battery monitor gadgets on the battery so I can check it daily to be sure the battery is not going too low. ... show more

  • Works Great - We Are Using It on the Dash Behind the Sun Shades
We drive a truck over the road and are required to have a personal vehicle parked at our company HQ. When we go home we drive our truck home and use our other vehicle to get around. This causes us to leave our '98 Dodge Durango (parked in Georgia) for 3 - 6 weeks at a time without starting it. When we do we use it to go get something to eat and back to work so it does not get driven enough to give the batteries a good charge. We purchased this, along with the Schumacher SPC-7A 12 Volt Solar Charge Controller, after having to jump start our vehicle after leaving it for 8 weeks. We use thin window shades (with Fairies on them) and put the Solar Charger on the dash. It charges just fine even though it is not in direct sunlight. After being parked for 4 weeks, we put a multi-meter on the battery and it read 12.3 volts..started right up. Now we are thinking about buying another one for our Car in Florida! Hope this helps. ... show more

  • good.
works great and charges my car fine. a bit bulky and would be nice if it had some sort of suction cups and place in the windshield glass.

  • Well worth the money
Excellent ... Couldn't be easier to use and works as intended. NOTE: ALWAYS "connect" your solar panel to controller LAST and "disconnect" the solar panel from controller FIRST.
