Equipped with Scepter's 2 way vented cap; this automatic air inflow valve system allows air to enter tank during operation and pressure to be released above 5 PSI. Scepter tanks are built to last. Caution: Tank swelling will occur. EPA regulations have eliminated the traditional venting in these tanks. New portable outboard marine fuel tanks will not vent below 5 PSI with noticeable swelling. The new EPA compliant cap will cause the portable outboard marine fuel tanks to swell. The swelling is a result of the fuel vapor building pressure, because the cap must stay sealed up to 5 PSI. The new tanks have been tested to remain sealed and safe at these pressures even when swelling is visible. I needed some extra fuel containers to take to Alaska for long stretches of highway where there are no gas stations. These worked just fine - no leaks. I read the reviews, and I can see how if you don't install everything correctly, you could get leaks, but I really suspect that human error was probably at fault. These things bulged in the sun, but they didn't leak, even under pressure. You do need to be sure to let the pressure escape before you try to hook it up, though. Simple solution - just open the fill hole and then hook it up and then close it again. My one critique is that they don't empty fully - there is always gas in the bottom - and there is no drain hole, so if you want to completely empty them, that can be a challenge. On the other hand, a drain hole would add another possible leak point, so ... I'm not sure. ... show more

The gasket for the fuel gauge and hose fitting was not properly installed. See the photo where you can see the gasket was out of position. The gas tank will leak if this is not fixed. I contacted Scepter via their website customer service link about getting a new gasket and they are sending me a replacement. I'm satisfied with the outcome, however they really should have better workmanship and QC to prevent this. I've read of other people having this same issue and if not noticed it would leak and cause dangerous gasoline spills. ... show more

I replaced the standard 6 gallon fuel tank with this new Septor 9 gallon tank. With a 60 hp Evinrude motor on my MirroCraft Holiday 1628, I got about 35-40 miles on a full tank. I used to carry a spare 6 gallon tank, but had to either keep it on the bench seat or on the floor. This was too cumbersome. Now with the 9 gallon tank, I am comfortable with my fuel in reserve. I mounted it with the fill cap facing forward, and can fill it without removing it from the straps. Remember... always fill the tank in a very well vented area! These new EPA approved gas tanks are designed to allow air to vent inward with little vacuum, but require 5 PSI to vent outward. Knowing this, I just keep the fill cap slightly loosened when I am storing the boat, or if I am out in the heat for an extended time. You must also unscrew the small valve that is on top of the fill cap for the venting to work! I hope this helps! ... show more

    • Cut the little brown rubber piece to vent pressure

This thing will build some serious pressure if you don’t nip the one way valve in the cap (brownish piece of rubber) so that it can vent pressure. I don’t think kits the manufacturer’s fault. It’s the epa’s ridiculous rules I’m sure. Other than that it’s a great tank. Does the job.

Took the gas tank to the gas station today, filled it up with 3 gallons......and gas started leaking out from the fuel gauge, underneath to be exact. After cleaning up the spilled gas, now the issue of transporting it, without more gas leaking!! Once home, after further inspection, the rubber gasket was NOT PLACE ON CORRECTLY. Only 3 of the 4 sides where in position, the problem side was not in contact, hence it left a big gap/hole. I will contact the company and ask for a new gasket. Seems less hassle than sending this one back and waiting for new one. ... show more
