  • Good bookcases for shelving a small library
Color: Select Cherry Finish Pattern Name: Bookcase
The bookshelf is sturdy. Nice solid color. They have a design similar to solid wood and not particle board. There were no chips and all the parts were accurately provided. I bought two of these bookcases. My first one was a complete success. The second box had a glitch with panels having holes too small for the dowels to fit and they were misaligned. I contacted Sauder and informed them of this mishap. They made a verification of purchase and immediately shipped out replacements. I had them within 48hrs. It took me an hour for each bookshelf to be put together. Always check inventory prior to assembly. ... show more

  • CRITICALLY IMPORTANT ASSEMBLY TIPS!!!
Color: Oiled Oak Finish Pattern Name: Bookcase
I just finished assembling three Sauder 2-shelf bookcases and two 5-shelf units. Another 2-shelf case is on the way, so you know I’m a fan. But there are some critically important things you’ll need to do to have a finished product that you’re happy with. I’ve posted this same review in the 2-shelf and 5-shelf products, so sorry if you’re seeing this for the second time. My cases are in oiled walnut, so you’ll have to make appropriate changes to my tips if your cases are in a different color. 1. There is little possibility, IMO, of your being shipped a unit in 100% perfect condition, but if you’re lucky enough to get one that’s flawless, you’ll probably ding it up slightly during assembly. One of my tall cases had a 1-inch long divot taken out of the front edge of the middle shelf during shipment, and there was no hiding it. This Amazon product fixed it perfectly: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073WJTNH5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Although there’s a “walnut” marker, I found that it was too dark once it had soaked into the exposed pressboard. The “cherry” marker worked perfectly for me on my oiled walnut cases. I’d place the order for the touchup markers when you order your bookcase. I’ve used these markers on other pieces of furniture in my house, and they are terrific. If your color is not oiled walnut, use one shade lighter than you think, and if it’s too light, you can correct it with a marker that’s a shade darker. 2. Many of the edges on these shelves consist of two pieces of laminate coming together at a 90-degree angle, and then they’re trimmed at the factory. They look OK, but not perfect. They destroy the illusion of these being solid wooden cabinets. Run your marking pen down the entire length of the edge, and they will make those edges disappear. This is particularly important on the tops of all the 2-shelf bookcases. 3. I found that there’s only one way to really mess your shelves up. That opportunity comes when you’re screwing the top molding piece to the top shelf. If you tighten those screws up too much, you’re cooked. The screw will push up and crack the laminate on the top shelf, and there’s little you can do to hide it. These screws are holding in a decorative piece, not a structural one, so tighten them just until the molding is no longer loose. 4. Use your own judgment, but the plastic nail starter they ship with the 5-shelf unit is for the birds. I used my fingers and my judgment concerning where to place the nails, and I didn’t have any problems with them. 5. The manual says to assemble the 5-shelf bookcase with the front side facing the floor. I strongly disagree with that. I assembled both my large bookcases face up, and when it came time to nail the back piece, I very gently turned the bookcase over and supported it on Styrofoam packing pieces. That’s it. These bookcases are a great value for the money, and if you follow my tips, you’ll be very pleased with the results. Pic attached. ... show more

  • Sturdy AND Nice Looking
Color: Estate Black Finish Pattern Name: Bookcase
These have been great. I purchased three to use as game shelves behind our couch in our great room. My husband had very little trouble putting them together - the only thing that went somewhat wrong was that the top is fairly thin, so on the first one he tightened the screw and it almost popped through the top. After that little learning experience, though, he didn't try to tighten so much and the others came out looking great. We have been using them for several months and they look great and are sturdy enough to stand up to three kids grabbing games and throwing them back in all the time! ... show more

  • Faulty design resulted in damaged top
Color: Salt Oak Finish Pattern Name: Bookcase
I like the color, design, and overall quality of the bookcase. Unfortunately, the design of the top shelf is faulty. The front top piece screws into the top. The way that the guide holes are drilled allow the screws to be pushed through the top. So, now the top is damaged in two places. Unsightly. They could easily make the holes so that it would be impossible to damage the top or they could have supplied shorter screws. Very disappointed. ... show more

  • Don’t bother
Color: Select Cherry Finish Pattern Name: Bookcase
Well... statistically you would think at least one of the two products purchased wouldn’t be broken... however this is why I don’t play the lottery. Both bookcases had cracks in the top shelf. One (shown) is very significant and is on the area that faces up. The other one has the crack that faces down but will still compromise the integrity of the top. It took a lot of effort to get all this unboxed and I’m not boxing it up again... Sauder can send me 2 new tops (uncracked please) or I won’t even bother putting this together. ... show more

  • Small hassle, worth the buy
Color: Estate Black Finish Pattern Name: Bookcase
I’m content with my new bookshelf. I bought it to use as a sort of foyer table for my apartment, and as a bookshelf of course. It’s partical board, but it has weight to it, and it’s sturdy. Pros: sturdy, looks nice, wasn’t super expensive (paid $70.99), works for what I intended it for, arrived a few days early, and was delivered to my door (I live upstairs) Cons: was a bit of a pain in the keester, to put together (specifically aligning the m49 piece). Mine came with the pre-drilled holes a tad off, so I had to drill my own holes. Thank goodness I recently purchased a drill. Took me sometime to put it together by myself. Overall review: It’s worth the price I paid for it. It’s actually a little larger, than I thought it’d be (not complaining though). I only took one star off because of the m49 hassle. I’m new to this hole power drill life, but if you’re power drill savvy the assembly won’t take long. I would recommend this to potential purchasers. ... show more
