This unit is essentially the R1 stand, but with MUCH more stability and greater range of motion (which is great if you use for a superslim portable monitor). Also, the back support pad that your tablet rests on is a little bit taller (4.25" vs 3.75") so your larger tablets (like iPad Pro 12.9) don't shake as much. On the R1 they don't tip over, but they do shake a little bit more when you tap or push on them. Folded down, the R1 is smaller (5.5" long x 1.125" high) vs the new stand (8" long x 1.5" high); however, the new stand appears "slimmer" on your desk because the hinge stalk is 75% slimmer. Overall, if you're looking for absolute portability and inches are precious, then the R1 is probably your choice. It is lighter and smaller, and I've used it to support iPads and Portable LED Monitors alike. But if you just want something minimalist for your semi-permanent desk setup, then the new stand is the way to go. FYI... Mine came with a bunch of scratches on the riser plate, but my iPad hides it when installed. So I didn't really care. I bought this on a recommendation from a friend who has the same model and uses his laptop on it. He and I both travel for work. When I saw his mobile workstation with a Bluetooth keyboard, mouse and his laptop hoisted up at eye level I knew that I had to have one too. My use for this will be to lift my laptop to a more comfortable height so I’m not slouching for hours at whatever random cafe, library, or restaurant I have to set up shop in. Right out of the box the stand feels perfectly stable even with the laptop. Build quality looks and feels good, and gives me some confidence that it will last, but if I notice my laptop flopping down to the ground, I’ll update the review about how durable the hinges are under a little more weight than was apparently intended for it. ... show more

    • Sturdy stand that stays out of the way
I have bought many iPad stands over the years; newest 12 south, other Satechi, other brand, etc. This by far is the best overall stand and gets the most use in my setups. It has a good max height that lifts it about 4 inches off the surface, it can be lowered all the way to the surface for drawing and playing touch games and is completely sturdy in every configuration. The base is solid and heavy with a full padded bottom and not just 4 nubs. Construction is solid throughout and it can still fold down to a mostly portable size. It would probably work well with my Nintendo Switch though I haven't tried it yet. I definitely would not use it for my 13" MBP. I highly recommend this for anyone who uses an iPad in general or an iPad in conjunction with a laptop setup. ... show more

I bought this stand to use with my 12.9-inch iPad Pro (6th generation). My current iPad stands (used with an 11-inch iPad Pro) were not heavy enough to stably hold the larger tablet. This one is — in both landscape and portrait orientation — and it is beautifully engineered, with the ability to adjust it to multiple angles. But there is one negative: the slot which holds the tablet is not wide enough to hold the 12.9-inch iPad Pro when the Apple Smart Folio is attached. The bare iPad is about 5mm thick, but when combined with the Smart Folio the total thickness is about 9mm. You can place the 12.9-inch iPad with Smart Folio on the stand, but there is a large gap between the iPad/Smart Folio and the bottom of the slot, which results in an extremely unstable situation. Despite this issue, I will keep the stand because I am mainly using the 12.9-inch iPad Pro as part of a desktop arrangement (either solo with a Bluetooth keyboard or connected to a MacBook Pro via Sidecar) and the stand is perfect for this use case. NOTE: Satechi can easily remedy this drawback in a future version of the stand by increasing the width of the slot a few millimeters. This shouldn’t impair the ability of the stand to work with bare or thinner tablets because the slot has a high enough lip, and it also has a rubber pad which prevents slippage. ... show more

Update: I ended up returning the R1 due to the fact that my 12.9 IPad Pro would wobble around. I felt it was too small. So, I ordered the Aluminum Desktop Stand through them and it was SOLID! I love this thing! My friend gave me one of these back in Dec 2019 for my iPad Pro 12.9” and I was instantly obsessed with it. I sit in various spots in my house to do work on it and it’s super handy to have it so adjustable plus I took it everywhere I traveled. I use it a whole lot in the “almost flat” position for drawing. Unfortunately, a month ago (sept 2021) the top plate came off, the screws are really small. I ordered a new one off Amazon and it came with a wobbly base, sent it back and ordered another one and it, too, had a wobbly base. I contacted Satechi on their website and they recommended the newer version, R1 Aluminum Hinge Holder so I signed up for their rewards program (free) and got $10 off and free shipping…so $30 total.
