  • A Minimalistic Multi-Function Watch
After several years of using a fitness watch (ie. Motorola Motorokr S9) especially while running, I love the idea of not needing to carry my phone to track mileage and listen to music. When Motorola stopped updating the firmware / software, I started looking for a good alternative. Gear Fit2 Pro is light and I hardly feel it on my wrist. I love how slick and minimalistic the watch look since I have a small wrist (about 7"). Pair it with a bluetooth headset (no audio plug for your wired earphone), I am able to listen to my 180 BPM playlist during training runs and marathons without wires and devices being a distraction. It did cause me to convert from Runkeeper to MapMyRun app for tracking purposes, but that wasn't a deal breaker. The battery is usually down to 50% by the end of the day and would charge it to 100% overnight if I know I will be using it on a run the next day. Otherwise, if I am just wearing it to tell time, keep abreast of my calendar (synced with my Google Calendar), and monitor my sleep cycle, I only need to charge it every other day. In order for the watch to work, you do need to install the Samsung Gear app on your phone to do basic setup (eg. get clock faces, install secondary apps, transfer music from phone to watch, etc.) via Bluetooth. After that, just make sure to turn on the GPS on the watch to use it independently of the phone/app. Last but not least, if you commute alot, make sure to have the watch charger handy. That's the only way to charge your watch and you will need a charging head for plugging the USB cable into a wall outlet. That would be something I wish Samsung would include with the watch. Else, just make sure you can find a USB outlet. Thankfully I use a Samsung phone and have the needed charging head. ... show more

  • Does what I need at a great price
I love that this is a fitness tracker that is smart! I'm always on the go with work, 100% travel, so I live off my phone, though I don't always feel/hear it hear it go off. This ensures I get the notifications I want/need. I like that I can send quick responses, that it gives me suggestions as well, and that I can make my own. The battery seems to die a ton sooner than expected though. Worse than the Fitbits. Actually, if it's not connected to BT it dies quicker than when it is. If you put it on DND it'll kill the battery less but still kills it. Speaking of DND... I dislike that I get notifications on the gear when my phone is on DND. Samsung to Samsung should register this easily without me having to manually put the gear on DND. Also, I tend to wear my watches face down, on the inside of the wrist. However I can't do this with the gear as it will constantly click the buttons, send me to settings on the phone, and delete the watch faces. I love the activity reminders! Keeps me going. I have yet to use the UA integrated workouts yet as I'm totally overwhelmed with work at the moment (I know excuses) but this has a ton of great features that anyone that is trying to get fit, stay fit, or just making the day to day will love. I do wish that it was easier to get 'friends' on here other than S Health... ... show more

  • Not recommending after long term use
Update 5-Jul-2018: I am beginning to not like this watch. After the last update (since a couple of months or so), it started auto detecting activities while I am simply driving, that too at significant speed so it is not like driving in a traffic jam is being detected as running. For the last few days, it stopped recording sleep or only recording partial (e.g., yesterday, it recorded only 2hrs, from 5am to 7am as sleep). My colleague has the same issues and also says that the step count has become lower after the last update, compared to what is recorded in his Samsung S7 phone (I don't have anything to compare against, so can't comment on that). I am no longer finding anything good about this watch. This watch no longer deserves the 3.5 star average rating, and will probably go down if every reviewer cared to come back and update with their long term experience. Update 4-Apr-2018: After using this for several months, I no longer feel like recommending it to others. There are many small shortcomings that add up and make you feel that it is not worth the price. Most of my activities don't get tracked, and even for those that get tracked, the device is quite picky in how you do the activity, so you can't just pick one that is the closest. E.g., the inactivity reminder has the option to do "Torso Twist" 5 times and unless I hold the palms exactly as in the picture (which you need to squint to figure out), twists are not recognized, and even then only 2 out of the 5 were detected. While some bands (like from Garmin) even detect many reps automatically, the activities that are detected by Gear Fit2 Pro are very limited (such as floor climbing) but are still unreliable. I am yet to find a use for any 3rd party apps. Their recent software update added two more taps to the Exercise app which adds to the complexity of the interface instead of making it simpler. The sleep detection is quite unreliable too, as the efficiency is quite high even on the days I couldn't get into sleep till 3am and rolling on my bed. I tried turning on the continuous HR and other than increasing the battery consumption, it didn't seem to add any additional functionality, mainly because the apps don't generate any new insights on the device or on Samsung Health app. In general the insights are limited, unlike some Garmin devices that even calculate stress levels. There is still no support to sync to Google Fit. The only satisfactory parts are the basic functionality that even a cheap HR enabled devices provide, plus the large screen that makes it possible to read notifications better. I am willing to lower another half a star, but since Amazon doesn't support that, leaving it at 3 stars for now. Summary: - Functionally, it does everything a typical fitness band would do. It doesn't feel heavy and it is comfortable to wear. The big color touch screen is a huge plus that makes the operation and consuming information real easy. The big negative is the battery life and how long it takes to fully recharge. It is definitely a big step up from a basic fitness band. - As a smartwatch, the Tizen apps are currently mostly useless and it doesn't even come with essential apps such as calculator. May be in the future we will see some standalone apps, especially those that can take advantage of its WiFi. Other functions like notifications could be anywhere from useless (if you are pairing an iPhone) to very useful (if you are using a Samsung phone). After using it for a little over a week, my biggest gripe is about the battery life (compared to most dedicated fitness bands that last at least 7 days). I am observing that I have to recharge every other day even with most of the optimizations in place (continuous HR and display turned off and no wifi). After 24hrs and with 3 activities that are tracked (8 minutes of Aerobics, 20 minutes of Yoga and 25 minutes of walk), and the battery life comes down by 40%. If I charge to 100% today morning, I will be left with about 20 to 25% charge after 2 days, which is not enough for that day, so I will have to charge it again. Charging would take about an hour from 0 to 100%, which means, from 20% to 100%, it takes about 45 minutes, which is still too long as I like to put it in charge when I go for shower. An alternative that I am going to try is to top up on a daily basis by keeping it in charge for about 20 minutes (longer than my shower, but should still work as a routine). Another crucial point for me is the size. There are some Android Wear watches that you can buy in the same price range, but they are going to be big for me. This band is large enough to cover the entire front of my wrist, so for most lean guys and most girls this will be on the borderline of being acceptable. When the screen is off, my wife says that it reminds her of restraints/trackers (like those criminals have to wear), but it doesn't bother me :) Here are some other negatives and positiives that matter to me: Negatives: - Proprietary charger with flimsy looking cable, makes me wonder if it will last its lifetime. Samsung should have really given a protective case for this. - Your data is mostly stuck with Samsung, unless you use some elaborate workarounds. - Sleep tracking is just so so. I sat down and watched a movie for about 1.30hrs and it was autodetected as sleep. It detects the on/off time and movements correctly, but the efficiency is bogus. I know I couldn't go back into sleep for several hours in the middle of the night, but just because I didn't move the efficiency was reported as 90%. - Automatic detection of floors is hit or miss, especially for one off climbs. - Automatic detection of workouts is not good for short workouts. Out of the 3 times I forgot to manually track my 8min aerobics, only once was it detected automatically. - During an activity the screen shouldn't automatically turn on, as it tends to distract. This happens during the driving as well, and reminds me of the huge warning my Casio G-Shock watch came with a few years ago about the backlight turning on and causing distraction during the drive. I wonder why Samsung is not even including a warning of the same sort. The distraction also applies to sleep as well, as it could bother some people, but luckily it can be worked around by using scheduled "Do not disturb" feature. Positives: - HR seems to be accurate as I compared with a Pulse Oximeter at different times (see a couple of pictures I attached). - Looks good when the screen is on. I like the red color that I bought. - Touchscreen and navigation are quite usable. There is a lot you can do on the band itself without having to sync and use the phone. - Location services give quite a few details in addition to an accurate distance and route. For a quick walk of about 1mi, I was able to view the highest and lowest elevations with a difference of 76ft and a total ascent of about 0.29mi which seem about right (as there are a lot of ups and down). I am not using it for any notifications. I am currently using it with an iPhone and there is no ability to customize the notifications, so not wanting to be alerted about every email I receive, I just kept it disabled. Apparently, you get a lot of extra features when it is paired with a Samsung phone, but I have no comments on it as I don't have one. I got it for about $130 after sale and additional discounts, but I feel that should have been the listed price to begin with and that we may see cheaper pricing in the future. No regrets yet! ... show more

  • Poor Customer Service!!
The watch worked fine for 6 months then the band broke, fell apart in pieces. I have been trying for 3 weeks to get it fixed. After being told it is no longer under warranty after only 6 months I had to pay a fee to get it repaired. Well, due to their extremely poor customer service they returned the watch to me, even though I paid the repair fee and issued another "ticket #". I have been on hold for an hour because they have no clue what they are doing. They are now telling me that because "this is an international watch" it will take 30 days to repair. International??? I live in Florida, and the last time I checked a map that was part of the USA!! So she transferred me to another department and here I sit, on hold AGAIN!! I am one very unsatisfied customer. I'm going to throw this watch away and will NEVER buy a Samsung watch again. VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. ... show more
