I bought it with the drain pad because I was not sure it would fit in my sink, but it does. It is usable both open and collapsed. It is sturdy and utensils cannot escape under the drain like with my old one. And it collapses quite small for storage. However, the white plastic intended to hold utensils does not snap securely into the drain. It is easily dislodged when putting dishes into the drain and the utensils tend to slide down under it instead standing upright. That is my only complaint. This is my favorite camping item! I love that it collapses and doesn't take up much room in our trailer, but you can still put a large amount of dishes in it to dry! We have a bucket that collapses also, love them both!
