The Salomon X Ultra 5 Mid GTX is an excellent hiking boot if you want something that feels more athletic than a traditional heavy boot, but still gives you the support and protection you need on the trail. The first thing I noticed is how light and stable they feel. They do not have that bulky, stiff feeling that some mid-height hiking boots have, which makes them much more comfortable for longer hikes and faster-paced walking. The traction is one of the biggest strengths. These feel very secure on dirt, gravel, rocks, roots, and uneven ground. The grip gives you a lot of confidence, especially when going downhill or stepping on loose surfaces. The mid-height design also adds nice ankle support without feeling restrictive. The Gore-Tex waterproofing is another major plus. These are great for wet grass, muddy trails, light rain, and shallow puddles. They help keep your feet dry while still feeling more breathable than I expected for a waterproof hiking boot. Comfort is very good overall, but the fit is definitely something to pay attention to. Salomon footwear can run a little snug, especially around the midfoot, so people with wider feet may want to consider sizing carefully. Once you get the right fit, though, they feel locked in, supportive, and trail-ready. Overall, these are a great choice for hiking, travel, outdoor work, and anyone who wants a durable waterproof boot that still feels fast and athletic. These boots are some of my favorites that I have ever owned in this lifetime. Out of the box, they fit very comfortably and don't take remotely as long to break in as leather or other heavier boots seem to. The material is very lightweight for them being such durable boots and the waterproofing is a nice feature of these as well. I live in the mountains, so I wear these things everywhere and they've served me quite well so far. As for the price, you really get what you pay for with these, and they seem to last for quite a long time compared to other cheaper pairs. In my own opinion, these are 5/5 boots, and I try to recommend them to anyone I know searching for a solid and comfortable pair to take on the trail, off-trail, and everything in between. ... show more

Compared to my big, bulky, heavy Keens these fit like a dream. I wear 10.5 street shoe, D width. These fit perfectly so comfortable and great ankle support. Not too tight and not too loose.

I'm on of those who bought salomon hiking boots years ago and loved them and they held up amazingly well. I've been having bad luck ordering footwear online so went to a local store to try these one. Wore them out of the store. Very comfortable. I've now walked a few miles in them, just strolling since I'm no longer a big hiker. I like them, however you can see the Chinese downgrades, with just some odd details and yeah, they do make a slapping sound when walking. Those changes from what Salomon used to be are the reason for only 4 stars. ... show more
