While initially researching the purchase of an AV rack, I quickly noticed that the more "affordable" units had either vastly insufficient weight tolerances, or - worse - weight information was not even provided. The thought of placing my 75lb power amplifier - along with ~60lb of additional electronics components - on a rack of questionable stability was enough to lead me to these well-regarded component racks from Salamander. Due to budgetary restrictions, I was forced to take a gamble and purchase the black MDF version of the 5-shelf rack. If I had a second chance, I would admittedly probably buy the walnut or cherry, however recent purchases at the time (which incidentally necessitated the rack itself) led to some frugality. I was reassured with the weight rating for the black MDF rack being given as 250lb - the same as in the walnut and cherry models. The price, furthermore, was very attractive on Amazon. The box arrived free of damages, and everything inside was in order. Assembly of the unit was tedious yet extremely simple. Most importantly, the stand itself is extremely sturdy. It is satisfyingly heavy, it does not wobble, and there was absolutely no trepidation in placing a particularly heavy or sensitive component upon the rack. I did not purchase this AV component rack for looks, but rather utility, and in that regard it deserves an unequivocal 5-star rating. That being said, I must admit that I have - in the few months since I've had the unit - become quite fond of its sleek, utilitarian look. Please review the attached photograph to judge for yourself. I see no better value for the music-lover on a budget who requires additional shelving. The black, MDF, 5-shelf rack from Salamander gets my complete recommendation.

I bought this AV rack in black and assembled it this past weekend. It is beautifully made and very well designed. It is very sturdy and very flexible. The assembly is straightforward and I especially appreciate the great flexibility in shelf height. The look of the rack is very polished and professional and it is well worth the money. I saw someone describe the assembly as "tedious" because you have to spin bolts down to the proper shelf height. While I agree that it takes some time to do this, I so appreciate the supreme flexibility of the design that the assembly didn't seem tedious at all. I recommend this unit wholeheartedly. The only thing I wish I had is a factory option for lacing rails, to clean up wiring and contribute to a professional, functional look. That said, I can easily adapt other lacing rails to the unit, so it isn't a problem. If Salamander Designs had specific rails which would work out of the box with this unit that would be even better. All in all, this is a beautiful piece of equipment which will work with a wide variety of setups. Highly recommended!

On the stand itself... I recently built a computer from scratch and when I received the new Tower I realized it was much bigger than the Dell it was replacing (prettier too) and storing this bad boy off in a corner of my desktop wasn’t going to work. On the other hand, I didn’t really want it directly on my floor as I didn’t want a lot of dust being sucked in. I looked at a lot of solutions, such as little rolling carts that you could clamp around the tower, straps you could hang from your desk, etc. I also looked at side tables and other furniture I might re-purpose. I didn’t like the carts / straps because they all made accessing the side panels a nuisance (and why build a computer you can’t easily get into?) I didn’t like side tables because none of them seemed to quite have the dimensions I wanted and a second shelf which would allow me to both raise the tower off the floor and put something else on the top shelf. I was surprised how many little tables like this there were not. After this stand, Ikea came closest to having something that might work, but it was a distant second and, while cheaper it was, well, cheaper. I chose this one for a few reasons: 1) The size was exactly what I needed. As you can see from attached photo, this table is within an inch of the height of my desk. (And I actually prefer it slightly lower as the printer on top didn’t need any help with height.) I also needed it to be fairly narrow, as to the right I have drawers facing towards the desk that I still wanted to, you know, open. The CPU tower is pretty large, roughly 9” x 18” x 21” (WxHxD). As you can see, it fits perfectly. (Note, there is ~ 5 inches behind the tower, I have it about 1.5” forward from the front edge of the table to improve the access to the USB ports on top, not because the table wasn’t deep enough.) I did have room on each side for backup drives, as well as on top for a portable drive. It was also just the right width for my printer on top. 2) I really wanted flexibility on shelf height. The computer is about 7 inches off the floor, which was right in my target distance. Before purchase, I debated between three and two shelves because that bottom shelf was not going to get a lot of headroom, but in the end I figured a small shelf underneath to shove some paper one would work. And it does look tidier this way. That said, I figured I’d get a bit more space on that bottom shelf, but in the end, decided it was better to have more space above the CPU to avoid whacking my hand when pulling USBs out of the top of the tower. So I could have lived without the third shelf. Of course, I didn’t realize I’d want that middle (CPU) shelf a couple of inches lower, so being able to make that sort of tweak after putting it all together was appreciated. 3) It is a solid, non-vibrating table. As I built my computer for near-silent running, it didn’t make sense to put it on something that would work against that goal. 4) It didn't hurt that the particular color complements my desk, though my desk is actually laminate whereas this is solid wood (and as such it does look far better than the laminate, with slightly richer tones.) The stand has not disappointed, all of the above are met with it. Putting the desktop and printer on this side table gave me a huge amount of extra real estate on my actual desk, it looks nice and it really does feel solid. On Delivery / customer service / assembly... It did take a while for delivery, most vendors who sell this table apparently all order it from Salamander Design, who then builds it after the order comes in and sends it directly to you. (At least for the 3 shelf version) I did find a handful of online retailers who sold it for less than the $349 most are asking for, but as they mostly got customer complaints, I decided to stick with Amazon, who could at least facilitate a resolution with a third-party. The customer service is all you could hope for. After the wait, I was a bit disappointed that one of the legs came rusty. I contacted Salamander, they were very nice about sending me a replacement leg at no cost (with another wait of several days, Amazon Prime really has spoiled me.) Still, after being told by the reseller that I was waiting for “quality control”, I was not impressed, especially as the other 3 legs also had minor blemishes, such a sliver shining through the black, though insufficient to actually justify asking for a replacement. It came well packaged, and the table itself was relatively easy to put together, though I needed some extra hands from other members of the household for a couple of steps, especially when you first put the legs through a shelf. Certainly threading the bolts took a lot less time with several pairs of hands. The boards are sturdy, and the legs are heavy (and very very solid.) There are rubber stoppers for the feet, which my hardwood floor appreciates. You don’t need any extra tools that don’t come with it and the instructions fit on a single page, so even someone who isn’t particularly handy will not find this difficult. The most difficult step (and really it is more tedious than difficult) is getting the shelves level, which is aided by the mini leveler that came with it, and hindered by any minor variations of your floor. For now I am quite happy with this table, it is exactly what I wanted. But I also like that this table is going to last forever and could easily be placed in just about any room and look good.

I purchased this (5 tier, Walnut (A5/W)) 11 years ago, it's high quality, sturdy, and aesthetically pleasing. I've loved it. Recently a bit of rust started to appear on the threaded rod. I contacted their support to see if the lifetime warranty covered it, I really wasn't expecting much based off of experiences with other brands - but their support and warranty are awesome - they sent me replacement hardware at no cost. I really, really appreciate this, I wouldn't have been able to restore it if it wasn't for their lifetime warranty. I definitely will buy from Salamander again!

I really like this rack. Its main advantage is that, thanks to a clever threaded rod arrangement, the shelves are completely adjustable, and can be added to if you need more; in fact, I just ordered a third one. It's also a bit smaller than the one I have, which to me is an advantage, since most audio equipment doesn't require that much space. I think it's good looking as well. Quibbles: My first unit came without the threaded rods, so after being told that it would be a week and a half before the factory could ship them, I had to return it and get a new one. Such things happen, I suppose. The MDF shelves on my second unit were really smelly with that smell that MDF has -- but curiously, not on the first. The shelves aren't as thick and heavy as the ones on my old rack. This isn't a problem for me -- in fact, it's an advantage -- but I can see it might be a disadvantage for those with turntables or vibration-sensitive equipment like tubes, or with really heavy amplifiers. Not that they're light or fragile or anything, they just may be less suitable for some uses. Also, casters aren't included and as I recall were pretty expensive. It would be nice if they came with the unit. It's also fairly time consuming to put together -- lots of nuts to thread and you have to get everything even -- but it's not exactly difficult, and the small extra effort is worth it since it buys you that adjustability. I should add that it doesn't have holes in the back for cables, not an issue for me but it may be for those who need it to be flush with the wall. All in all, I'm glad I bought it and wish I'd known about it when I bought my old rack (not that that one isn't nice). Since most things can be improved, I don't often award five stars, but there really isn't much to argue with here.

About 25 years ago I noticed the Archetype series on display at local music store. I ordered from them a 2 shelf unit and was satisfied with the quality. Recently I ordered the same exact thing here on Amazon and was not at all satisfied. The shelves instead of a smooth black satin surface and a smell kind of like new Ikea, the shelves on this unit were lighter and not as solid, and they were rough textured with some kind of black plastic material and the material actually smelled pretty bad. I did everything I could to get this smell to go away, several cleanings and sprayings and it lessened some but never went away. I contacted the company and related the same info above, and they were not at all accommodating, mentioning something about "change of process". I don't even like having this thing in my house. While I would have recommended this product how it used to be made, I do not recommend the current version (this review applies to the black version, I cannot speak to the other finishes because I have never owned them). I will never buy a product from this Company again.

Once I got the hang of how to turn the nuts down the threaded rods (I would say about 30-40 minutes), and balance the shelves so they were level (the packaging comes with a level - the smallest one I’ve ever seen, maybe about an inch, but it does the job), it was actually fun to assemble it. I liked the challenge once I knew how to do it. The rack is solid and it looks great. I mean, really great. Minimalist and functional, can’t beat it. Aesthetically it frames the equipment like a picture frame, so in that sense the rack disappears and you get the pleasure of enjoying the look of your gear, and then you can switch your attention to the rack itself, because it is exceptionally stunning. Standard bookshelf racks just look like heavy and big blocks of wood that take up space. The Archetype is open and airy to let heat escape, yet it is obvious from the material and hardware - metal rods, nuts, and hardwood shelves - that the wind is not going to blow it away! It’s the only piece of furniture that I have ever assembled that is rock solid. And there is no doubt that the Archetype is indeed, as I think they must mean by the name, architectural. The structure itself, with the nuts, threaded rods, and the shelves, accentuate the strength of the rack, and no doubt about it, it is strong, and it is heavy. And with the equipment on it, it is virtually impossible to lift if your equipment is heavy, and the rubber feet on the bottom make it difficult to slide. But these are plusses, they speak to the stability of it. I haven’t done it, but I suspect that if you are in need of sliding it (maybe to plug in cables to the back of the equipment), then I suggest you try tilting it slightly so someone can slide a rag or something like that under the feet so that it will slide easier and not scratch the floor. This should work with wood floors, not sure about carpet. I guess you could try those felt round pads that have adhesive on one side to stick under sofa, bookshelves, etc., to protect the floor. That would work on floor, but I doubt on carpet. Anyway, this thing works great, makes your equipment look great, and it looks great on its own. You can’t possibly go wrong.

I purchased this one and I also bought one directly from Audio Advisor. I liked how easy it was to assemble, they include a small bubble level, but it is also good to have a small tape measure handy. A tape measure helps the initial placement of the shelves, and the level fine tunes it. The second one I bought was directly from Audio Advisor. However after assembling it, I noticed it was missing a rubber foot. I wrote an email explaining that one rubber foot was missing and they 2 day mailed me a replacement. Even though I had to wait an extra two days due to the Fourth of July holiday. I thought that their speedy response was great customer service!
