The jig makes it extremely easy to keep a consistent angle while sharpening. After just a few minutes, even my cheap, beat up chisels had a nice edge. I look forward to buying a few more grits of stones to hone them more. In hindsight, maybe it would've been better to buy a fuller set right away.

    • Serious design problems! (but it can work)
Style: Red Honing Guide and Stone with ruler
The cutting edge of a chisel or plane iron is formed between the ground and honed angle face and the flattened back of the blade. Any jig to help sharpen that edge must index to that flattened back or to a plane parallel to it. Unfortunately, many chisels have front faces at a slight angle to that back face. Setting up this jig for such a chisel means estimating the position and cutting angle. This jig will give repeatable, if slightly inaccurate edge angles on plane irons and on chisels with parallel front and back faces. I was just lucky that the first chisel I tried to set up in it had a tapered thickness and beveled edges, and wouldn't grip properly, so I recognized the problem immediately. I suspect that the vendor has never sharpened a chisel, as one of the images in the listing shows a chisel in the tool upside down, ready to ruin its edge on the whetstone. ... show more

I have not used the sharpening stone much, so I can't testify to its longevity, but it will sharpen a Narex Richter bench chisel. Having said that, the Saker chisel sharpening Jig is very disappointing as it does not necessarily tighten down on my Richters so that it is level to the sharpening stone. Consequently, it sharpened one side of the chisel the first run through and then I had to really work to get the chisel sharpened easily again. I really like the idea of the sharpening jig and thought the Saker would be good based upon my experience with other Saker products and because the roller on this jig looks much wider than rollers on most other similar sharpening jigs. I might use it again, but will probably seek another chisel jig from another company before I do. ... show more

I purchased this as part of a system I have assembled to professionally sharpen knives, chisels, axes, etc. This obviously is for chisels, plain blades, etc and performs brilliantly. So far so good. It definitely keeps chisels stable while sharpening. The angle guide is easy to use. It feels solid. I haven't used the stone provided, but it looks good enough.

That product works just fine. Creates a sharp edge. The problem I have is the 400 grit worn out fast and needs to be replaced after a week of use.
