I have been using the 6280 for about 7 years for various weapons. I recently switched to the 1911 for daily use on the street, so I got the best holster I knew of to carry it in. The STX TAC finish matches leather or nylon gear equally well, and it is the toughest finish Safariland makes in my experience. Scratches just wipe off and disappear with a little armor all. My Taurus 1911, without rail, fit this holster very well. The only problem encountered was the hood. When depressed and rotating the hood forward to draw the weapon, the hood would actually drag the top of the slide on one side. Not sure if this will correct itself after wear in but could be a problem for a smooth natural draw.. ... show more

Regarding fit- this particular model fit my Colt 1911 that did NOT have a rail. I tried a railed version and it did not work. The holster allows you to carry "cocked and locked" with the hood closing between the hammer and slide. This is the fourth 6280 I have bought. I like the lower ride and the leather lining. Kydex is VERY hard on firearm finishes and I am willing to pay a little extra for the leather lining to protect my pistols. I also like that I can buy different mounting options such as paddles, different ride heights, etc. with the same holster. Obviously this is not a suitable concealed carry holster as it positions the pistol away from your body and lower for a comfortable draw, but would be difficult to conceal. ... show more

    • Design Flaw
This holster has a design flaw that causes the magazine to release in my Kimber Pro Crimson Carry. It is easy to correct by trimming some of the material away from the magazine release button, but I almost lost a magazine before I saw what it was doing. Safariland ignored my email advising them of the flaw. Once the problem was corrected it was a great holster. Just be sure to check that it clears the magazine release button on your pistol. ... show more

It works for a standard A1. If you have anything other than stock A1 sights the hood will snag on the sights. The hood also seemed soft and flexible, making it hard to operate the hood.

Fantastic holster for the 1911! In locked and cocked mode the hood covers the firing pin and separates it from the hammer. After some practice the draw will come natural. For light security work this was perfect!

really happy to say that this fits my Para Ordnance P16.40 from 1997 really well. props to Safariland for this sturdy product! Now if only they could make an ALS for it and 2011s :-)
