  • Solid Build and Good Support
Just got our rower a couple days ago so I'll update this sometime down the road to comment more on the quality over time. However, initially impressions are that this is a solid, well built piece of equipment. The first one we received actually had a defect in the manufacturing and the wood was slightly bubbled and split on top where the belt idler pully was mounted. We contacted Amazon and it was picked up at our doorstep and returned. Unfortunately, we had to wait another 3 weeks but then got a brand new replacement at no charge. I found that the water pump did not work well and was taking far too long to fill the tank so I just free poured into the tank - it can be done ... carefully. Providing a funnel would be better than the plastic pump mechanism. The instructions could be more clear (they seem to be somewhat English vocabulary and grammar challenged) but they were easy enough to follow. A couple of things that would make the instructions a lot more functional: 1) it takes 6.5 gallons of water to fill the machine up to the calibration line (not in the literature anywhere so we didn't know how much distilled water to buy at first) and 2) we had no idea how much water clarifying powder was supplied with the machine or how much 1 gram was to add to the water tank so we bought a scale from Amazon to figure it out. Approx. 23 g of water powder was provided with the original purchase and, for anyone who doesn't have a scale, you can turn the water tank plug upside down and fill the empty cavity in the bottom to about 2/3 full. *** UPDATE *** We've had the rower for a year now and we've been using it every week (off and on) with no problems. We don't use the control panel that came with it - there are many apps out there for rowing so we use our phones instead. We did not stay on top of the regular maintenance like we should have so the water quality got bad. Not only did we not empty it and replace the water every 2-3 months, we didn't even make sure we put the algaecide powder in as recommended - I'm sure we're not the first to let this happen. So, today, I used the pump to empty the rower and I realize now that the pump does actually work - it's a bit tough to get it going and keep it going, especially when the rower water level is at the same height or lower than the bucket (see photo) but, with lots of hand pumping, I was able to almost completely empty the reservoir. I estimate that there was about 0.5 gal of slightly orange colored water left after I got everything out I could with the pump. I decided to try replacing "most" of the water and then adding a large does of algaecide to see if it cleans it up well enough and then I'll try to stay on top of it going forward. I thought this would be better than trying to move the machine outside and turn it upside down to empty it. I think keeping the water clean and clear is going to be a challenge and I might think about buying some chlorine and pH balancing chemicals to manage it like a hot tub but I'm sure most people will not want to do this. Then again, maybe the maintenance can be simplified to doing nothing at all - what does it really matter if the water gets a little cloudy and slightly orange colored? ... show more

  • UPDATED - Redesigned Rower!
UPDATE - 3/11/2021: After posting my original review below, I was contacted by customer service, who shared my concern regarding the leak. To my surprise, I was told that based upon my feedback they will redesign the rower by end of February and send me the new one free of charge! I was skeptical, but true to their word, I received the new rower. The leak is now fixed! I can see that there is now a newly designed silicone gasket around the center spindle and bolts. I filled up the tank to the calibration level, and lifted it up into the storage position. Sure enough, it no longer leaks! They also addressed my other observations. The documentation has been improved. It is more helpful and better written. Gone is the 1-page note in the original packaging that suggested draining the water before storage. Obviously, with the leak fixed, it is no longer necessary. The "mystery blue powder" is now labeled as algaecide, with directions to use 1 gram every 3 months. ("1 gram" is approximately 1/4 teaspoon of the powder.) It doesn't say what to do with it, but I think it's obvious you add it into the water in the tank. The customer service of this company has been incredible. Clearly, they take customer satisfaction seriously! Very responsive communication, and they followed through to ensure my complete satisfaction. I highly recommend this product and the company that stands behind it. --------------------------- ORIGINAL REVIEW: Be careful--the water calibration level is not the safe level for vertical storage! I filled it to the line, and stood it up, I DUMPED A COUPLE OF GALLONS OF WATER ONTO THE FLOOR! You see, the tub is not water/airtight--there is an open hole in the center where the main shaft enters the tub. It's not obvious--the hole is larger than the shaft, so it's not sealed. You would think they would have put a sealed watertight bearing around the shaft. As a result, if the water level is too high, it will spill out of that hole when you stand it up! The instructions mention none of this. I can forgive the atrocious English everywhere in the manual--and assembly is simple enough (seven bolts with an allen wrench) that you can forgive not having any assembly directions, also. BUT, if you want to avoid having a small water disaster in your room, I suggest you fill it while the unit is upright. The fill hole is about level with the open center hole, so you will likely not have an accident if you stop below the level of the fill hole. And since there is an open hole in the center, be very careful about not sloshing the water in the tank when you are moving it or standing it upright. There is a single sheet that "recommended" that you drain the tank "at first" before "collection", which I think in English means, they suggest you drain the water before storing it upright. It sort of defeats the purpose, unless you will not use it again any time soon, and it becomes a clothes hanger like your other exercise equipment. The hand pump is not a siphon pump or a really bad one, so be prepared to spend 10 minutes assembling the rower, and 20 minutes pumping water into it. If you have a better pump or even a piece of hose to siphon the "old fashion way", you're already ahead of the game. They also include some blue powder in a small bag, and a small container of what I think is some kind of lube. Again, no documentation as to what they are or what to do with them. I think the blue powder might be some kind of surfactant or anti-microbial agent for the water, but I'm not risking it. And I have no idea what to do with the other one. There is no variable resistance adjustment other than adding/removing water, so this unit is great for leisurely rowing, not really that much of a workout for an adult. I feel the resistance is low, even with faster strokes. My 12 year old daughter even commented that it doesn't feel like much of a workout. And since this is the same design sold by many sellers here, I assume they are all the same. ... show more
