I ordered this winch for a non-conventional need-to lift items into the loft of my workshop. I can't carry the weight up a ladder like I used to in my 20s, so I made a small 2'x2' platform to lift things to the loft level, using a truss to support the weight and mounting the winch on the first level. While not its intended purpose, this thing performs like a champ. While the winch is heavy, it is also very sturdy. Mounting it was no small feat but it is solidly mounted to reinforced studs. The operation of the winch is very easy and works well for up and down. It is connected to a 110v ac to 12v dc inverter which was easy to connect and works perfectly. This winch helped me make a nice lift that isn't manually operated by pulling a rope through pulleys. It did take a little engineering on my part, but for the money, I can't think of a better way. Great value and great weight capacity.

I have been on the lookout for an electric winch for my open garden trailer, so when this one came up in my search, I wanted to give it a try. Construction looks good, but the biggest issue is the design of the controls. I give the winch itself 4 stars, but I would rate the power controls at zero stars. "Needs Improvement" would be an understatement. However, if you ditch the supplied controls and pair it with a reversing winch solenoid with remote control (about $30-$40) this winch should do the job for you. As for why I rate the controls so poorly, the first defect is the lack of a quick disconnect. A fixed control head is fine for a hoist, but not for a winch. Power runs from the battery to the handheld control head to the winch. There is only about 3 feet between the control and the winch motor, with wires running in two different directions, and no ability to detach or store the control head when not in use. This setup will severely limit usage and placement, putting you dangerously close to the winch during operation. Amp draw isn't published clearly, or at least I couldn't find it before ordering. The specifications in the accompanying booklet say it has a 1.2hp motor with a 0.9 kW draw at 12 volts, which puts it at 75 amps. This is on par with a winch rated for more than a ton, but 75 amps would require #4 copper, and the supplied wires are nowhere near that large. They are not marked with gauge, but look to be #10 copper-clad aluminum. I foresee these getting dangerously hot very quickly, and running into a piece of plastic that you are holding in your hand. There is no fuse or breaker for overcurrent conditions. Ergonomically, it is even hard to hold. I have large hands and can barely hold it without gloves. If your hands or gloves are slick with mud, or you have the smaller hands of a youth, it may require both hands to hold it without dropping it. You can forget trying to hold the control with one hand while steering with the other. Again, this is all the fault of the included control head, which is cheap and inexpensive to replace.

I picked this up the moment it became available because a winch I purchased earlier this winter is already showing signs of wear after only a handful of uses on my ATV. I'm hoping the steel cable design on this unit proves to be more durable over the long run. My first impressions are mostly positive. The winch itself feels solid and well built, and the included mounting plate and roller fairlead are nice additions. The compact size should make it a good fit for ATVs, UTVs, trailers, and other utility applications around the property. One of the reasons I was interested in this model is the galvanized steel cable. While synthetic rope certainly has its advantages, I've had good experiences with steel cable for heavier-duty work and expect it to hold up well with proper maintenance. The installation appears straightforward, and the 2500-pound rating should be more than adequate for tasks such as: moving trailers pulling logs recovering equipment general ATV and property work The one thing that didn't immediately impress me was the wired hand controller. It feels a bit less robust than the rest of the winch assembly. It may prove perfectly reliable over time, but it was the one component that stood out as feeling less substantial right out of the box. Pros Solid overall construction Steel cable included Roller fairlead and mounting plate included Compact size Good pulling capacity for ATV and utility work Straightforward installation Cons Hand controller feels somewhat inexpensive Long-term durability remains to be tested Overall, this looks like a capable winch that should be well suited for ATV, UTV, trailer, and property maintenance tasks. Time will tell how it performs in the long run, but my initial impression is that it offers a good combination of capability and value.

Nice little winch for your atv/trailer/utv or anything you need to pull stuff on and off of. One thing I want to say at the get go. There's a lot of discussion on steel cable vs. soft synthetic winches, and let me just tell you, if you prefer synthetic, this winch will handle it just fine. Just swap cables at installation, making sure no burs or sharp edges exist that would cut the synthetic line. This ruggcel has overlapping rollers which work just fine with synthetics as long as they are polished and clean, PLUS, synthetics are lighter, easier to use and don't store kinetic energy as much as steel cable, making them safer for people who don't know what they're doing. On the other hand, Synthetics do NOT tolerate abrasion well, so depending on your conditions and use..pick which one suits best. For dragging things through dirt or rock, then steel is the way to go. If pulling your quad buddies out of the creek (hheheh) then synth works just fine. As for the winch itself, its actually well made, of good materials and though not reall commercial long term viable, for general use, it's fine. I give it 5 stars for design/construction, and materials:). RECOMMENDED!

This is a fairly typical 2500lb winch. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it uses a switch without a relay, so I wonder how long the contacts in the switch will last.
