I am not sure how many box style graters I have gone through, reviewing my purchase history, it looks like I even tried a hexagonal grater in the hopes of it being stronger. No grater, until this one, has lived up to and surpassed my expectations of being a quality kitchen tool. When I realized that store bought grated cheese was covered in wood pulp or some other parting agent, I began to grate my own cheese. The funny thing is once you start grating your own cheese, the magic of cheese returns - the way it moistens, melts and bubbles. Of course this love destroyed grater after grater. Aged Parmesan is as good a test as any for a grater as I have found, and this grater passed that test easily. It doesn’t bend or deflect in any way. The irony of course is that because of the price, I waited and waited to buy this grater. I assumed it’s construction was like all the other graters I have owned. Finally, at a price drop I purchased this grater. When I unboxed it, I was struck by the weight as well as the thickness of the support bar as well as the graters overall rigidity. I pulled out my digital calipers and realized it is in essence the frame is 1/4” wire. If there is one annoyance about grating cheese with a box grater it’s what to grate the cheese in. A plate, a bowl, a dish. Too high of a side it interferes, too low and it often falls over the edge. This grater eliminates all the guess work. Cake pan, casserole, or bowl: whatever you prefer (a corning-ware load pan has become my favorite option). This grater is constructed well enough to support itself. That is a huge game changer. I’ll be the first to admit that this is an expensive grater, but I have waited a couple of months to write my review, in order to make sure it really is all I initially thought as well as being worth the price. This is the greatest grater around - ready to grate any cheese, anytime. I wholeheartedly recommend this product and believe you will never regret it. ... show more

I purchased the course grater. It is comparable with any box grater. With this twist. The blade design for the rosle is slightly different than a box grater. The box grater basically gives a "flat" shoestring. The rosle gives a "slightly" banana shaped shoestring. Its all in the blade design. Hashbrown potatos brown superbly. Cook a wee bit faster. Texture like i described is "slightly" heavier than a box. The actual hole size in the rosle is the same size as a box grater. The rosle blade design produces the "banana" shoestring. So dont be afraid to order the coarse. I love mine. I havent tried shredding lettuce yet...but i know the rosle will do it. Now...for safety. This thing will shred your fingers to the bone before you ever will realize that you are maimed for life. DO NOT LET A CHILD USE THIS TOOL!! Some adults shouldnt use this tool. A safety glove is recommended. Having said that...i dont use a glove. Just my bare fingers. When you get close to the end of whatever you are shredding...back way off the pressure. Slow your speed to a snail crawl. Let the tool do the work. Not your brute force. Did i mention this tool is sharp? Respect it...and you will be good to go. This rosle is built heavy duty. HEAVY DUTY!!! no flexing. Super strong wire handle and frame. I bet one could shred a super cold one pound block of chedder cheese in less than 20 seconds. But i dont recommend doing that. I wanna keep my finger tips for a few more years. Cleaning is a breeze. I just use a spray bottle with plain water. Then pat dry with a towel. Cost. Yeh. A little expensive. But...if an average box grater is $10-$15 ..the rosle is well worth the difference. I wasnt paid for this revue. I am not connected to rosle in any way. I am simply an end user like you. Order it. We use this all the time, mostly for cheese but also sometimes potatoes, carrots and zucchini. The shreds are definitely course as stated, so choose a finer-holed one if you really need that. But most of the time your going to cook or melt what ever your shredding anyway, so who cares. + IMO, better and quicker than dragging out a food processor to do a big (or small) shredding job--easier to clean too. My family has been using this for 3 years now. No signs of trouble from the shredder body and frame. This is pretty comfortable to use and makes a nice larger shred size. It is nice to be able to put over a bowl or to work with at any angle. I bought it after I read about it at www.cooksillustrated.com, who said this about it: "This easy-to-store, flat grater made shredding a breeze, thanks to big, sharp holes; a large surface for better efficiency; and a solid, rigid frame that enabled continuous grating (rather than short bursts). It fit over medium and large bowls, or testers could hold the grater at any suitable angle; grippy rubber feet stuck securely to the work surface. Since most recipes call for coarse shreds—and we have a rasp-style grater for fine grating—we don’t mind that it grates only in one size." I previously had the OXO box, but when Cook's Illustrated noted some issues with it's shredding, I thought I'd upgrade to the Rosle, and I'm glad I did. I love handheld graters. I hate how cheap they are, and the handles invariably break and they get weaker and weaker in the dishwasher. This design is so simple, it’s a snap to hand wash, but it has survived its few adventures in the DW. This thing will outlast me. It has chewed happily through cheeses, potatoes, carrots, and onion for me. I wish they made one that was a finer grate, and I’d buy that one too. Don’t cut yourself. ... show more
