To hold independently, you can only use this on a 4x4. The strap it comes with doesn't come any longer. We're redoing our fence and have to hold the leveler in place when setting the posts as they're 6x6s. At least it performs as needed. It's definitely a great help to measure all angles simultaneously. It folds for easy storage. I can recommend, for smaller projects, or if you don't mind holding it in place. ... show more

I put up a new mailbox post recently after a delivery driver backed into our mailbox and broke the prior 4x4 post off at ground level. That's exactly what this is designed for. When you're dealing with quick setting cement, you want something that indicates the angle on both axes -- fore and aft as well as left and right. This is a tool you can live without, but it sure it a help when you want to check a post for level without touching it as the concrete sets. The magnets are fine for square steel posts, cabinets, appliances, etc. They are not intended to hold the level onto round pipes or posts. The elastic strap can barely make it around a 4x4 post on its largest setting, but a 6x6 post, such as those often used as corner posts on carports, is a complete no-go with the included strap. I'll be replacing the strap for that reason. The manufacturer might have saved five cents by not making the elastic strap a few inches longer, but it cost them a star in this review. All in all, it's a good tool that I expect to use many times in the coming years. ... show more

This specialty tool allows you to see if a post or pole is perfectly vertical or horizontal at a glance. It works well on pipes using magnetic attachment or elastic strap and dimensional lumber using the elastic strap. As noted by others, the strap is only long enough to stretch around a 4x4 post. Anything larger and you will need to rig your own strap. It is intuitive to use and folds up compactly when not in use. It is light in weight, but sturdily constructed. It is the right tool for a specific job. 4 stars was my assessment because, with a little modification in design, it could have been made suitable for use with larger beams and for small diameter dowels and pipes/posts such as bird feeder posts which are difficult to get perfectly vertical. ... show more

This right angle post level is a bit of a unitasker but if you're putting up fence posts it saves quite a bit of time versus moving your level around. Just strap the level to your pole and move it around till the bubbles agree. It comes with an elastic strap that's only long enough for a 4x4 post so you'll need to replace that if you're working with heavier timbers. ... show more

    • Good tool, but not meant for large posts

I like this thing, but it's not meant for use on larger posts. Anything bigger than 4x4 is not going to be easy to use with this thing. The strap will not go all the way around to hold the level on the post. And holding this on the post while trying to get the post plumb is difficult because the level really needs to be set on the post correctly in order to make the measurements matter. I was trying to use this on 6x6 nominal posts and in the end I had to revert back to a small box level to get the posts plumb. On 4x4 posts, this level will be really great, and it folds down to a compact size, which makes it easy to transport (although the strap does tend to come off and get lost on the ground or in a tool bag.) ... show more

The media could not be loaded. Almost! If only it could handle a 6x6 post! Granted, I plant more 4x4 fence line posts than I do 6x6 end and corner posts but how difficult would it have been to make the strap longer? This is the best tool I have found for installing posts or poles straight. Attach to the post or pole and back fill the hole enough to hold the position, then slide the Post Level around 180 degrees on a round pole or post or on a square post remove the Post Level and move to the other side to check the reading. This only needs to be done one or two times if the readings prove the tool accurate. the tool is made of bright yellow plastic, so it is easy to find when misplaced on the work sight and will not rust either. ... show more

I can see this for building fences on my farm and setting post either metal or wooden post the magnet are strong and hold tightly and the strap on it is for use with wooden post I have used it on 1-1/2” to 6” square tubing post so far.
