Rolling Stone The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time: Plus Remembering Eddie Van Halen

Few musicians had such a massive influence on the development of the guitar during the post-Jimi Hendrix era as Eddie Van Halen, who died on October 6, 2020. This special issue of Rolling Stone is a celebration of rock & roll’s primary expressive weapon and its greatest players, as determined by an electorate of living masters and modern disciples. The guitar, the defining instrumental voice of rock & roll, has been the sound of ecstasy, change and independence for more than half a century. Along with a list of Rolling Stone’s greatest guitarists and a 100-song playlist of essential listening, Rolling Stone honors Van Halen's recent passing by including two deep, candid interviews in which he discusses his life, career and musical influences. It also includes tributes to Eddie from greats like Joe Satriani, Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine.
