Description

The SC6-L is a simple input/output breakout box designed for Apple iOS devices. Inspired by the original SC6 with a 3.5mm TRRS jack, the SC6-L uses a Lightning Connector to connect directly to Apple iOS devices. With two TRRS inputs and one stereo headphone output, the SC6-L can be used with two RØDE smartLav+ microphones and one pair of headphones, allowing audio monitoring and playback, perfect for interview scenarios. The SC6-L can also be used with RØDE’s range of VideoMics in conjunction with a TRRS adaptor, such as the SC4 and SC7. The SC6-L has been optimised to work seamlessly with the easy-to-use RØDE Reporter App. Users can enable/disable direct monitoring, alter the gain boost, and choose between summed stereo and dual-mono. These features are retained within the SC6-L allowing users to use the dual-mono mode with other apps, such as the Camera app, GarageBand, Voice Memos, etc. The SC6-L is compatible with all Apple iOS devices with a Lightning connection and running iOS 11 or higher. The SC6-L is also available as part of the SC6-L Mobile Interview Kit.

  • Second channel for a second mic
It's always good to have a backup, and this device allows you to have that with your iPhone when recording videos because with it you can record dual channel audio, so the two mics each record on a separate channel. The channels will not be in sync so you need to open the file in Audacity and edit it there, unless your video editing program allows you to do that natively. I use Camtasia so I have to edit externally. It might sound like a hassle but it gives you the option to edit out odd noises or rustling sounds that might not be on the second mic. ... show more

  • Great form factor but too noisy for my purposes
Since Amazon likes to mix random product reviews together on one page, this is for the SC6-L audio interface for iOS devices. UPDATE: I feel a little dumb, but finally realized you need TRRS, not TRS. Using the correct cable solves the level and noise issues described in my original review! So now I’d say this is a great value if you want the most compact audio input for an iPhone. My use case was a little different than the intended dual microphone set up. I wanted a small and easy way to get a stereo line-level signal into my iPhone from my computer’s audio interface. The first issues I had were user error as I assumed you needed mono TS 1/8” cables, which were causing issues with the signal where I could barely get any level. After realizing I needed a TRS stereo cable I got much better level but there is audible noise in the signal. Amazingly neither Amazon’s support nor RODE mentioned this detail. However, the real problem is that low and medium settings still clip the signal when even when your input is only at about 50%, while the high setting adds too much noise. You’re left with a cleaner, but low volume signal or a noisy, but high volume signal. So I couldn’t find a way to adjust my gain staging to get a good clean signal. I’ll admit this could be an impedance issue since these inputs are expecting a mic level signal, so maybe you’d be fine for it’s real intended use. On the other hand the Roland Go:Mixer, which I just bought for close to the same price, has tons of clean gain, with more input options and physical gain controls. The downside is it’s larger and not as pocketable. ... show more

  • Near perfect, but don’t let that Near stop your purchase
I bought this to do on location interviews and video recording for my podcast and YouTube channel. We don’t have much of a budget so flexing our phones or tablets is a must for us! The SC6-L is a brilliant device, I bought it on the premise that I could connect two lapel mics and record on the go. It works beautifully...as long as your connections are solid or if you bought Rode’s lapel mic ($60-80). I used a 3rd party mic from a friend that has two bands on the adapter, this is NOT the same as what Rode uses. This means the operator has to be diligent when inserting the mic otherwise the RODE Reporter app will not record any audio. Sometimes it isn’t an issue, and other times it is a HUGE pain in the butt. Just a warning that I did not know up front. ... show more

  • What a lie. This thing is a waste of money. Seriously.
This product, for me, DID NOT DO what it said it would do: have both TRRS lav mics record to audio in a video with equal level (meaning both mics in same condition/environment and sound should SOUND and BE the same. FAIL! Yes, I downloaded and used the Rode App (from iTunes) and set it many different ways during my test). I bought the SC6-L and used my two TRRS Lav mics on it just now. Tested it with the FiLMiC Pro app to record video. Spoke into one mic at a time, taking turns back-to-back, equal voice tone, volume, same count "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, A, B, C, D" over and over. Watched the levels. Played it back. ONE mic sound lower than the other. FAIL. Set the auto gain correction in the FiLMiC Pro app to auto, even tried Voice Processing option. FAIL. I used $5.00 mic splitter cable that did the SAME thing: one mic sound better or the other one sounds lower. Why pay $79+ dollars when a $5 cable does the same thing. I am very disappointed in this product, and mind you, I am not sensitive. Being a realist here: the SC6-L does NOT treat both TRRS lav mics the same. NO MATTER how exact you sound in each mic, the same placement, the same conditions, the same words, same distance from each mic.....one mic IS going to have a better/stronger sound than the other. Do not buy this. I am so sorry this did not work. Going to refund it immediately. ... show more

  • SC6-L and SC4 Finally solved the iPhone X microphone problem
We purchased a Rode VideoMic kit that came with a TRS cable and could not get any sound input on an iPhone X. We tried all kinds of adapters before realizing we needed a SC4 adapter (TRS to TRRS) to use with a TRRS input Lightning adapter. The Rode SC6-L is pretty expensive for a little dongle, but we had tried other brands and could not get it to work. Exasperated, we decided to just go with Rode parts with the hope that they had been designed to work together. There may be less expensive solutions, but just know that this one works. Having 2 mic inputs and a headphone output is also very helpful. ... show more

  • Works with Zoom meetings
Hooked up a rode ntg-2 -> beachtek Dxa-4 -> trrs to trrs -> sc6-l -> iPad for a zoom meeting. Worked well for the most part after adjusting sensitivity in the rode app. I could have bypassed the dxa-4 with a converter cable. I wish I didn’t need the trs to trrs though, but I like having two inputs, monitoring and sensitivity adjustments. Be sure to plug it in before opening your app ... show more

  • Ok for TRRS mics only. Does not work with line-level inputs at all. Returning to Amazon.
For the price, this device has proved extremely disappointing. It suffers from the same mic-only problem as most of the analog sound input devices for iPhone, iPad, and iPad Pro. It should not be so blasted difficult to find devices with the flexibility to handle line-level inputs as well. Stand-alone mics are fine for small-time blogging and limited field word, but far from adequate in large meeting rooms, conference centers, auditoriums, and churches. Then a direct digital or analog connection to a sound system is required. While other audio interfaces, including cheaper ones, have solid casings and longer USB cables, this Rode interface has a very thin cheap feel and very short pigtail cable, removing the possibility of strain relief for the lightning connector. Returning this to Amazon due to the mic-only limitations that won't work for any of my applications. ... show more
