Recently I decide to save up for my first big purchase into sound gear, the Rode NTG3. I got it in and hooked it up, I wasn't impressed, even disappointed. But all the reviews I read, the fact it was my first time using a shot gun mic and the knowledge that it was a $700 mic left me feeling that it was something I was doing wrong. Well I was double checking something on the rode site when they had this announcement plastered over the top. From Rode website "Important information about purchasing from Amazon in the US. RØDE Microphones does not authorize Fulfilled By Amazon. We have purchased counterfeit RØDE products using Fulfilled by Amazon and highly recommend that you only purchase RØDE products from authorised dealers. If you purchase any RØDE microphone from an unauthorized dealer via Fulfilled By Amazon you will not receive any US warranty or technical support." Amazon gave me a refund even though I didn't have the original box and it was over 90 days after my purchase. They were great about it, but still was leery of the fact I may have spent so much money for a fake. Today I got my mic in (ordered from B&H) and the change was noticeable. I got good levels at a much lower input level on my Zoom H4N, hiss was much less and the audio sounded fuller. I had a fake mic for sure.     • Can't Give It 5 Stars, Here's Why...

I went on Ebay and got an older-model Audio-Technica long shotgun that works amazingly well and a $25 Lyx Pro. Still, I had heard that Peter McKinnon and Curtis Judd use the NTG2 (at least sometimes). Rather than not get a warranty, I made sure to order directly from Amazon (and not Fulfilled by Amazon, which voids the warranty). Bought this brand new. I get it delivered and plug it up and there's an electrical hum when I use the microphone plugged into my Zoom F4 using AC power. This hum is not there while on batter power with the Zoom F4. Strange. Not even the cheap $25 shotgun from Lyx does that. I have other microphones from Rode (Broadcaster, smartLav+, Video MicMe) and they all work exceedingly well. I was quite taken aback when I realized I have an audio issue with this NTG2 mic. I love the quality of the microphone when there is no hum. It sounds pretty good. I will keep it at 3 stars until Rode return my inquiry and inform me if this is how the mic is or if there may be some defect/repair option available. ... show more

Light weight, and strong. It came with everything. The clip holder, for a mic stand. The USB charge cable. The Sticker. Plus opportunity for 10 year warranty, upon proper registration. Zipper case. The one Con: you need to plug in the mini USB into the "blind hole". While I understand the cavity protects the mini USB, plugging it in, is awkward. Because you need to properly align the plug to the receptacle, at the bottom of the XLR plug. But this is the proper location for such a plug, and not a deal breaker,to plug It in and charge it. Then 3 green LEDS blink 1-2-3, while charging. But what a beautiful Microphone. And not overly long, unless you demand something less than 10.94 " Just under 11 inches long. The audio quality is Immortal as well. Your basically getting a $1000 microphone for about $300. Making it hands down, Best in Class. That being said, be advised it took over hour to charge it, on my computer USB port. ... show more

I don't know if I received a fake or not. Initially, I punched the number into the Rode website in order to register the warranty, and there was a green check after I pressed register, so I assumed that Rode recognized the serial number. I never completed the process because Rode wanted me to create a user account. After testing the mic using different mixers and cable, yet still getting a loud noise floor, I had to dump it. Unusable. I was suspect that the mic may be a fake, so I went back to the Rode website and made up a serial number and still got a green check. The lesson is that the Rode green check means nothing, so don't rely on it as an authentication. Perhaps, fully completing the registration process or contacting Rode directly will yield different results. ... show more

FYI: If you notice pin 1 on the mic is longer than the others, don't worry. This is a design feature of all or most XLR Rode mics. The following is from Rode's website: Why is one pin of the XLR connector longer than the other two? is this normal? Yes, this is perfectly normal and is a design feature of the RØDE microphone. The ground XLR pin (pin 1) is designed to be slightly longer than the other two pins. This is to ensure that when an XLR is plugged into the mic XLR socket the first pin that comes into contact is the ground pin. This feature is implemented in all RØDE microphones to protect the microphone circuitry from a static electricity short that could potentially damage the microphone circuitry. ... show more

I use these for recording podcasts. I know most people go for a dynamic mic for these situations, but I like shotgun mics much more. These pick up all the qualities of our voices perfectly. They're extremely directional, and background noise isn't much of a concern (I should point out that I use these in an acoustically treated room, so there are no echoes bouncing off the walls). When I compare my audio to professional level podcasts while wearing studio monitoring headphones, there is no discernible difference. I've even let a couple friends that do mixing/mastering for a living, and they don't notice any difference as well. I'm sure if any self-proclaimed "audiophiles" read this, they'll heavily disagree. Their anxiety levels will rise, and they'll feel the desire to comment on this to tell me I'm wrong and that this is just an "average mic you noob". Don't listen to these people. This is a good mic, and with the right settings, recording environment, and compression, your audio will sound superb. As a reminder, I use these for podcasts. I cannot vouch for how they perform with recording musical instruments, except for a jaw harp, which it records beautifully. ... show more
