I can't tell when it is charged. I plugged in it when I got it and it lit up. I left it overnight in the kitchen. Lit up the kitchen. After 14 hours I unplugged it Works fine. When you turn it over the food you want to pepper the light comes on so you can see how much pepper you want. The light is anoying. I have charged it several times since. It still lights up. Could do without the lights. I don't eat in the dark so always observe what I eat. Can easily see the pepper on the food.

These work great. I have a garlic, herb, sea salt combo in one and pepper in the other. I wish it was a rocker instead of a slide switch as it is a bit aggressive/fast. Often I just need a dash and feel like one quick slide down and back is too much. I’m still happy to have these, especially with the coupon deal.
