  • The next great game with a few additions and subtractions
Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Band-in-a-Box Bundle
Missing a load of features since Rock Band 3, but the formula is still mostly the same, the most major change is the return of a campaign mode and the big kicker for parties if "Play a Show" mode, whereas previous titles had you mindlessly select songs in quickplay mode, this mode allows you to pick a starting song, and then the game simplify the selection process by giving you five options ("An 80s song, A song by nirvana, more, etc.) allowing you to continuously play for hours and not realize it, the crowd will also make requests which you can accept or deny. All in all the game modes leave little to be desired for the hardcore and those brand new to the experience might be overwhelmed by the amount of DLC content, and also mortified by how 'meh' the on disc track list appears to be. As for the instruments themselves, while the drums don't quit measure up to the ION Pro kit levels of goodness the rubber feet and more supported foot pedal easily make this the best set of standard drum set included in a Rock Band yet, albeit with a few hiccups from the Bluetooth connection. The guitar seems nearly identical, and has only really adopted a lighter feel to it, even if the button placements are pretty bad; I found myself constantly switching modes(wah-wah, etc.) because the whammy bar was so obtrusively long it kept slamming into it. The microphone worked exactly as advertised, considering it's a wired variety. Overall, the intent of this package in early sales, I believe, is to drum up money and interest because Harmonix intends to only make one Rock Band for this console cycle, and continually update it with more features, so there's a possibility that Keyboard owners and pro guitar might see next-gen, but for now the offerings are a bit slim, the store has spotty connections, and the bluetooth will occasionally experience total failure. This does not at all detract from the great experience it is to play this game with other people, even more than that, it doesn't even scratch the surface of what this game might become in a few months, the only major turn-off for prospective buyers will be the question of "if not now, when?" ... show more

  • Make an Educated Decision
Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Band-in-a-Box Bundle
DLC I've been playing Rock Band games since the first installment. I have a ton of DLC. When Rock Band 4 was announced and they said your old DLC would carry over, I was stoked. When it was announced you could pre-load your DLC I hopped on my PS4 and immediately started to get frustrated. Not only are DLC songs for PS4 hidden in the "Add-on" sub-menu, but not all of them were there (even now they're not there, like Rock Band 1 and 2 songs which Harmonix said would carry over), and you have to download them individually. No joke - I spent 4 hours just navigating the PS4's atrocious online store to pre-load half my DLC library. TIP: I've since learned that it's FAR easier to download your music via the PSN phone app or their desktop site. Don't waste your time doing it on console. Guitar First thing I did when I got my Band-in-a-Box was apply the firmware update for my new RB4 guitar. Thankfully I have a Windows 7 PC with a USB Bluetooth connector so I was able to do that. Sorry Mac/older PC users. Here's what I found: • Auto-sync doesn't work. It's 100% broken. Tried calibrating 3 times and got random numbers each time that were all completely off. • After manually calibrating using my old Rock Band 2 guitar, I tried out a few songs and noticed notes would randomly drop. The faster you hit notes, the more of a chance you have of missing a note. To make sure it wasn't my guitar, I played the same DLC in Rock Band 3 with my RB2 guitar. 100% notes hit. Tried RB4 and got 93%. Yeah, it's terrible. • There's a noticeable .5 to 1 second lag for freestyle guitar solos. This makes it difficult to follow the on-screen prompts and maintain your streak. • Freestyle solos for some DLC songs are hilariously atrocious. Cringe-worthy. Laughed many times when I tried to freestyle and accidentally summoned a dying cat in my speakers. I eventually turned it off entirely - the ability to do so being one of Rock Band 4's few saving graces. Drums Where do I even begin. Installed the firmware update, and not only was I having the same bass pedal and fill issues everyone else seems to be having (rapid bass notes and fills will fail to register), but my red drum pad would randomly just stop working. In the middle of a song it would just kinda shut off and refuse to register hits, even after re-syncing. To make matters worse, the new dynamic fills not only sound awful and wholly out of place with the song, but failing to hit them will result in losing your streak. Thankfully you can turn this feature off, which I did immediately. Microphone Before I had a chance to test whether the problems with the new RB4 mics were as bad as they sound (it won't register, the scrolling lyrics are blurry and illegible, there's a .5 to 1 second delay between you singing and you hearing yourself sing in-game which destroys your timing, the new freestyle vocals are so broken you can basically sing anything and the game will give you a 100% score), I was already packing up the game to return to Amazon. The reason you're seeing wildly varying reviews for Rock Band 4 is because there are two types of people playing right now: people who just wanna mess around in the game on easy/medium and have a good time with friends/family, and people who play on hard/expert and expected more from brand new instruments/software. Both are totally valid ways of playing the game, but try to figure out what kind of player you are before getting this. It'll significantly affect your enjoyment of the game. Hell, even if you're the former type of player you'll probably be incredibly annoyed at certain aspects of RB4, like the microphone issues and sync errors, while other issues will be masked by your proficiency with the game. If you don't know you're hitting those guitar/drum notes from experience then you may just blame yourself for being "bad". Note that my 1 star review is NOT for the game itself. If I were rating Rock Band 4 alone I'd probably give it a 3 out of 5 stars. There are issues and it's bare-bones, but it's salvageable by playing with old instruments and waiting for patches (one of which has already been promised by Harmonix in December). No, my 1 star review is for the Band-in-a-Box bundle. If you absolutely have to play RB4 for whatever reason, I highly advise you stay away from this bundle and the new Mad Catz instruments. They are terrible compared to other instruments that... you know, work. Returned my BIAB bundle the day after receiving it. ... show more
