  • perfect for intro to robotics and programming
What this kit ultimately is, is an intro to STEM - Robotics and Python Programming. The kit has everything you need (as listed) except for the main controller (a Raspberry Pi). The product description is very clear about this so it shouldn't come as a surprise. The kit is compatible with a Raspberry Pi 3B or 3B+ but good luck finding one. Your cheapest current solution is a Pi 4B with 2GB of RAM for around or less than $60. Honestly, do not pay more than that for one. The build is very straightforward and should be a good kit for a preteen with a good handle on mathematics. You have options for regular wheels and mini-treads for rougher terrain. Once fully set up you can control this robotic car via the remote controller or from your phone, tablet, or computer via the Raspberry Pi's web service. Everything you need to know is provided on the USB drive. The out-of-box experience will keep a child busy for a solid day building this car. Then it will be another day of getting all the software set up and experimenting with various Python scripts to get things working as you want it. I would recommend supplementing this with a Raspberry Pi and Python book to learn the finer points of how robust this platform could be. I got this to work on with my nephew who will be staying with us for a month. He enjoys science and learning and is great at math. I have a master's in Computer Science and teach part-time at a small college. With that being said, I think this is a wonderful product to use as an intro to the field of robotics. Yes, you are building a toy. This toy is also a learning tool. That tool can do so much more than just drive around like a normal RC car. In building this you will learn how to set up a Raspberry Pi, basic wiring for circuitry, intermediate programming, and advanced problem-solving as you begin to explore and play with this kit. It beats letting them sit on the couch all day playing video games. If you get two of these kits you could even get creative and start robot battles. There are just so many opportunities and this kit can be used as a platform to build on in the future. ... show more

I received this item as part of the Amazon Vine program. Where to start? I have been thinking about this review for a while, and to be honest, I'm not sure if I want to write a positive review for this kit. Please note that this kit requires a Raspberry Pi motherboard to work, and it can be very expensive, about $80 after tax at this review. The kit itself is decent. It's well-packaged and comes with almost everything you need to build this robot car(a Raspberry Pi mobo is required). It's somewhat straightforward; like building a Lego set, all you have to do is follow the instructions(on the included USB stick). After building the robo-car, the next step is the programming. For programming, this kit/Raspberry Pi uses Python, and without a decent computer language model knowledge, it is going to be a bit hard for normal people to follow through with the instructions, but still doable. After building and programming, the final product is just meh as a toy. It's a simple robocar, and you can control it via RaspPi web functions. However, it's a fine learning kit for DIY and programming, like those science lab kits from the 90s. Overall, 4/5. ... show more

First off I thought that this was a complete robotic car, but it is not. (As an Amazon Viner sometimes we have to request a product before we know all of the details of what it exactly is, otherwise it will be gone once we know and decide to review the item). This kit does NOT include the REQUIRED Raspberry Pi motherboard which must be purchased separately. I have never in my life ever went down the road of putting together and then programming any type of robot. But I'm game to give it a shot. Years ago I would put together my personal PC's because at the time it was much cheaper to do so. So I taught myself how to do it. It appears that this robotic car may be similar to putting together parts of a PC. I'm game. But it appears that I will be having to lay out another $100 or so to get the Raspberry Pi motherboard. That's okay, I look at it as an adventure, and if I am successful I can say that I did it. So, beware, on top of the nearly $90 for this kit (and I can't believe that with all of the parts it contains that it is only $90. Looks like 100's worth of things) you will need to invest another $100 for the raspberry Pi motherboard if you don't have one available. This "kit" comes with a multitude of parts which must be connected to the Raspberry board for it to function. It also comes with a USB flash drive with all of the instructions to assemble this robot. There is also a video on the flash drive, but I don't have the proper codec to view it and will have to spend another $0.99 with Microsoft to get it. Anyway, the adventure will soon begin. I must give this robot kit 5 stars even before I complete the build simply because of all the hardware it includes. Really impressive. Hopefully I will be back when I get it built with an updated review. ... show more
