    • Rideshare: A Unique Horror Anthology Experience
Format: Kindle
Rideshare by Timothy King and James Kaine is a novel that connects four short stories through a rideshare. Charlie the rideshare driver is our into the stories once he picks up the passengers we get some banter back and forth then we get the story of the passenger and why they are taking this ride. This is a dual novel with each writer writing two of the stories in Rideshare. You can feel the enthusiasm of two horror writers trying to out do the other. When the characters make a sadistic smile you feel the authors make the same smile as they gleefully write the mayhem and gore. The horror is all over the place; it is based on the seven deadly sins which leaves a lot of ground to cover. There is body horror, supernatural horror, grief horror, and psychological horror. Trigger warnings are addressed upfront saying basically all of them and the material is graphic and disturbing. The way I would describe Rideshare is like the anthology films Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow, how the stories are loosely tied together until the end and there are little vignettes between each story. The pace changes with each story but the book as a whole moves at a steady pace. I did consider The Life and Times of Edward Callahan slowest paced story, but also the best. The author did something fun with the best story letting the audience choose. At the end of the book there is some discussion as to what the best story is, and there is also a QR code to scan and submit, where the authors will reveal the winner in a year. The stories do want to get to the horror and skip over some of the psychological aspects that I enjoy. The book is not too interested in what makes these characters do these depraved things. There are no 1-10 levels of depravity; the book just goes to 11. The ending of the book is devilishly fun. The characters talk very tongue and cheek about all the horrible events.
