  • Neat Device with obtrusive nut
When this device finally arrived I was impressed with the detail of this mini vise. The disappointed came when I attempted to bolt it to my work table. A large nut at the bottom of the device prevented it from being bolted flush and level to the work table. I solved the problem to some extent y placing a piece of foam sponge under the device which alleviated some of the wobbly. However, once I started to work on my projects it worked well and stable with the heavy force that I used for drilling and filing. Sorry only 2 stars because of the pesky nut. ... show more

  • A little Work Makes it a lot Better
I have been a silversmith and gunsmith for 28 years. I have been looking for more than 5 years for a mini swivel vise of HIGH quality to use for filing my intricate silver inlays. There really isn't one, (under $600). That being said you can make this one function a lot better. The spring and washer on the screw shaft need to be removed. If you can manage that, cut the spring almost in half. I cut my spring three times to get just the right feel. This will allow the handle to turn much smoother/easier. The bolt head in the center of the bottom is indeed too thick and will cause the vise to rock. Remove the bolt and file/grind the head to 1/2 it's thickness. While you have the swivel base in two pieces, flat sand the mating surfaces using 180 wet/dry sand paper. Thoroughly clean and lightly lubricate the parts worked on. Bring the vise jaws together and file the tops to be flush with each other. I then glued 3/32 inch thick strips of hard maple to the jaw faces. I removed the swivel lock and ground it down 1/4 inch so that it sat lower and had a better feel. You can fine tune where the handle locks the swivel by how much you remove from the lock screw. I also shortened the handle to get quicker action from it. Now it is the perfect vise for holding small silver pieces while I file them. ... show more
