  • Great radio
Good range (as much as you'd expect from a 5w handheld), sounds very clear and loud (better than many other radios I've used), and the radio itself seems well built. Battery life is really good too. For the price, the RT76p is absolutely worth the investment. There's a youtube video where this radio was tested (more like tortured) and it still performed beyond expectation. Check it out to see what you can expect. I'm completely satisfied with this purchase. ... show more

  • Warning: preprogrammed with privacy codes enabled. 3 radios for $45 is a steal for these!
These come preprogrammed with privacy codes turned on. The radios will talk to each other just fine but you may have trouble hearing other radios if their codes are set differently. Easy to program with the standard K-type plug usb programming cord. (same cable as UV5R) and these radios are supported in CHIRP. The radios don't feel cheap at all! ... show more

  • A solid GMRS radio with many features, but one small issue.
These are well built radios that transmit and receive just as well as the more expensive BTech GMRS V-1. Though I’ve not tested them myself with a meter, I’ve seen elsewhere that the stock antenna on these has a better SWR than the V-1. The antenna IS removable, but you first have to remove a small set screw. I really like the channel select nob! I have one complaint. It’s the PTT button. It’s too sensitive. I have to constantly be aware of it or I accidentally transmit. If the button were a bit more firm it would help. Perhaps that just a personal preference. Overall a good radio at an excellent price! ... show more

  • So far, Very GOOD customer support after the sale!
*** Update #1 (DEC 17, 2020) Four and a half (4.5) Star Rated*** This radio has A LOT of capability that is not well covered in the manual but it IS NOT A TOY. It is simple if you want something to turn on, rotate a knob to a "channel" and more than likely not hear anyone on the GMRS. It also can talk to the smaller FRS radios as well. But there is a lot more to this radio that you can do and some "Discovery Learning" by simply playing with the radio I found a way to program channels (i.e. NOAA channels) via the front panel's key pad without having to update the firmware. Since we no longer have a PC in our house (only Apple products) updating the firmware is a problem (Customer Support identified that the RT76P's firmware is NOT supported by iOS). But being able to key in the NOAA freqs out of the box is a HUGE plus for non-PC users. The one issue that have not figured out yet is how (and if) I can re-program a saved channel that is programmed between 1-30 via the front panel. I know I can re-program and re-write the 1-30 channels via the firmware upgrade using a P (that is well documented on the internet). But due to discovering how to tune to a channel via the front panel, I am upgrading my star review from a 4 to a 4.5 (since MAC users are still not supported) but since Amazon does not do half-stars, I'll round up due to the great Customer Support. I will update my review as I learn more about the radio. For those wanting to know what I did to tune to the NOAA stations (you might find another way to do the same thing) since the manual does not specify this: 1) with the power turned OFF, press and hold the menu button 2) while continuing to press and hold the menu button, turn the unit ON. You will hear "Freq Mode" announced 3) release the menu button 4) Press the Exit AB button to select the second line of the display showing the second frequency (you may exit out and if so, go back to step #1) If you continue to exit out, skip this step and simply hit the arrow down button to get to the second frequency line - this is where you want to enter the NOAA freq. 5) type in the NOAA frequency that is for your area (while all of them are listed below, I googled to see what mine was - i.e. 162.475) 5) press menu again and NOAA was immediately picked-up. ***Original post (Dec 14, 2020) Four (4) Star Rated*** We just purchased these radios after having gone to the FCC's website and registered and paid our fee for the GMRS license (still awaiting the call sign). Being new to the GMRS and ham world I have been trying to figure out what would be the best radios/HTs for me and the family while out in the RV. GMRS is the clear winner since other family members won't take the Technician test to be able to legally operate a 2-way dual band. As for these radios, at the time of this review (DEC 2020) only 2-3 you tube videos discussing this version (RT76P) and only discussed on a couple forums (myGMRS.com is one). So the jury is out on the quality. It appears many want to say the RT76P is illegal for GMRS since not type 95 certified since it has the program button on the front BUT Retevis found a way to lock down the software/firmware on this so that a user cannot transmit on the anything but the GMRS pre-programmed bands. This things appear to be perfectly legal out of the box for GMRS. I have found that the NOAA channels are not on the radios out of the box nor does Retevis provide them to the consumer within the pacakaging or manual. BUT by talking with Retrevis Cusotmer Support, they pointed me to the a firmware update on their main website and they sent to me (PC only, MAC is not supported) wiht the understanding that is should put the NOAA channels on the radio. HOWEVER, the consumer (me) needs the cable for firmware updates. Customer Support DID say they would send one to me, that sounds really good, I'll update to see if it happens. Looking at thier website they have multiple cables for various radios but none of them specifically list the correct cable. HOWEVER, customer support did say the correct cable for the RT76P is C9018A (Described as a 2 Pin Programming cable and it supports a lot of Retevis and non-Retevis radios but still does not specifically state the RT76P, but I'll trust the Customer service until I get the cable and try to use it and update later). I also found that the scan feature does not appear to allow SK1 to reprogram. It does appear to allow for repeater use but I'm still learning on the programming of this and I'm not sure exactly how to set those in to allow for the proper offset or if that automatically does it for you. It would appear that you just change one of your pre-set channel freqs to your repeater freq and it may auto-offset for you. The other piece is where to enter the CTCSS if required. But all that's more advanced but will allow for greater range when near repeaters. I deducted one (1) star for now due to Retevis's advertising stating NOAA leading me to believe that this already has NOAA channels pre-programmed on it (maybe I shouldn't have expected that since closer review of the advertising does not specifically say NOAA channels preloaded or provided). While this HT is capable of receiving NOAA channels (I think it's a locked-down 2-way dual band that is FCC GMRS compliant), it does not have the channels programmed into it nor does Retevis provide the NOAA channels in the user manual or as a separate insert in the packaging (that would be a way solution for Retevis!) for any type of manual user entry. BUT the Customer Support Rep (Angela) sent these to me with the firmware (PC only MAC is not supported) and their(Retevis's) commitment to help get mine working as advertised. I'll have to see if I can manually enter the NOAA channel in via the frequency mode so that I can hear (which is legal for GMRS) and not transmit. This is just a pain since you have to do that every time you want to find out what is going on when you are out in the elements using this radio, having it pre-programmed on one of the selectable channels would be much better and user friendly. More to follow as I continue to try and work with these while I am in the return window phase (through End of Jan 2021). NOAA Channels: CH1: 162.550 CH2: 162.400 CH3: 162.475 CH4: 162.425 CH5: 162.450 CH6: 162.500 CH7: 162.525 CH8: 161.650 CH9: 161.775 CH10:161.750 CH11:162.000 ... show more

  • Overall a decent radio...
This is the first time I've bought the Retevis brand radio. I was attracted to this product because they had a bundled deal for 3 radios that was worth giving them a shot. I've been using a set of of Midland GXT FRS/GMRS radios for quite some time and the Midland MXT275's for my vehicles. I was looking for a more powerful handheld radio that had more features. Outside of the traditional FRS/GMRS and NOAA channels, I still wanted to listen/scan other frequencies and have the ability program them both on the handset itself and via a computer. As mentioned, you can program this via the handset and computer. Out of the box they have all the GMRS, FRS/GMRS shared, and repeater channels. What I don't like is that the "privacy codes" are preset. I would prefer them all off and program/add them to my needs, but it seems each brand seems to be doing this. (This is when programming with a computer comes in handy.) Also, it seems all the preprogramed channels are set to narrow band instead of wide band. This may be a default to save battery or something, but you cannot change this setting via the handset. You have to program it via a computer. In my experience, this is the only way to change it, so no changing without a computer when you're on the road. As mentioned, this can programed/configured via the handset, but you can use CHIRP to program it on a PC or a Mac. If you are not familiar with CHIRP, do some research and download it (free). I use multiple radios that I can program quickly via CHIRP. If you can work in Excel, this will be fairly easy to use. That being said, it's important to understand exactly what settings you're changing before you change it.... Important Message.... This is a GMRS radio. Using GMRS frequencies requires a license. It is very easy to attain, so if you plan on purchasing this radios or plan on using GMRS frequencies, there should be no reason why you should not get it considering how easy and cheap it is. You can use FRS frequencies that are shared, but you are limited on the power you can use. Check the internet for instructions. You pay a single fee and you and your family can use the same license and call sign. You may still program this to listen to any channel/frequency this radio can receive, but you cannot transmit without the appropriate license. Be mindful how you program this radio to avoid transmitting on frequencies you are not licensed or allowed to transmit on. Now back to the review.... Overall, programming is just as simple as any other "adult" type radio using CHIRP. Using the handset in my experience is just as simple, but you should read the documentation to better understand some of the names as some are not as obvious as they should be. I did a have some problems with the instructions, but if you have some experience with these types of radios, you will be able to figure out exactly what they meant. If you are not, you may have a problem with a few settings. I could see some beginners having issues, but not experienced users. Be mindful of this. Build quality is good, but according to the documentation exposure to dust, heat, humidity, and splashes are not advised.... basically, using it outdoors? You decide. My assumption is that this shouldn't be left on a dashboard for long periods of time and keep it in a vehicle where there are less chances of being exposed to ... well, outside. To give you context, my Midland GXT's are capable of being used in the rain. Evidently, if you breath too hard on these, this may damage them due to the humidity. Time will tell. If it seems I'm being a bit sarcastic, it is because I am. This is probably the biggest shortcoming of this handset, it's ruggedness or lack of. The build quality seems good, but it's most likely not sealed well. In comparison to other quality/programmable GMRS radios, these will do the job. I did not return these as they were intended for road tripping with the family as we do a lot of RV'ing. Using a phone is not really practical when driving for quick messages. These are also helpful in National Parks and BLM where cell coverage is lacking. There are a lot of features I didn't go through, but the description should give you enough to get a good idea of what these are capable of. As noted, as long as they're not exposed to outdoor elements for more than a few minutes. I mentioned returning these, because for $40-$50 more, you can get a set of three radios from competing brands that have at least the same features if not more with better outdoor rating. For me, I'm going to use the set it and forget it for the family. I won't be too disappointed if they break as they're still pretty cheap. I cannot say I recommend these simply because of their durability in comparison to other brands. Spend the extra $$ and pick up another brand that at least give you dust and splash protection. If exposure is not an issue for you, you can still pick up better brand for slightly more. ... show more

  • Good radios
These radios are simple to use, a real value for the money. They have a good battery life. I think that they are superior to CB and FRS radios. I got for camping, and in case of emergencies, which we have too regularly where we live.
