  • Another awesome GMRS radio by Retevis, and a happy customer
Style: Mobile Radio
I love this radio. It is built like a tank with excellent build quality. The programming is easy, you have to take the time to read the owners manual. I belong to a gmrs repeater club, and i hit one of their repeaters that is over 60 miles away with excellent tx and rx. The sound quality of the internal speaker is also excellent. I cant believe how good its range is. It has great functionality. The internal speaker reminds me of the mobile police radios, the sound is that good. I was surprised. I received the radio yesterday and hooked it up to a copper gmrs j-pole antenna mounted 40 feet up. I have the retevis ra-25 mounted in my car, another great gmrs radio they make, and i am using the Ra-87 as a base station. I want to buy another one of these and a duplexer to make a repeater. I highly recommend this radio. I suggest you buy at least one, maybe even two. You can also program it with Chirp. I do like the Retevis software to program this radio. Retevis is making great products. Im very happy with this radio which is an absolute bargain at this price point. All the contact I made today said the radio transmits great with no static and loud and clear. ... show more

  • Solid GMRS Radio — Easy Setup, Feels Durable
Style: Mobile Radio
I received the Retevis RA87 quickly and got it installed without any real trouble. I still need to find a permanent mounting spot and finalize wiring routes , but for initial testing, everything went smoothly. The menu system is straightforward, and it didn’t take long to figure out or memorize the key functions. I had to bring my laptop out to the vehicle since I don’t have a power supply at home, but that wasn’t a big deal. Programming was simple — I already had my channel setup saved in CHIRP, so I was up and running in no time. I haven’t tested the range just yet, but I can already tell it’ll outdo my two 5-watt handhelds. I’m even considering picking up a second or third unit to eventually build a repeater. Build-wise, the radio feels solid — not cheap or flimsy. My only nitpick is the microphone: it works fine, but I wish it had a little more heft. Not sure if there’s an upgrade option for that. Initial transmissions have been clean and strong. So far, it does exactly what I need, and I’m pleased with the purchase. ... show more

  • Great Radio for Price
Style: Mobile Radio
Happy with purchase. Not much GMRS activity locally, so have really had a chance to burn it in. Appreciate the quality of the radio, much better than some models in the same tier and price range. Sound is decent. Have not verified power output, but range supports advertised claims. Programming was easy via chirp. Controls are not overly straight forward, keep a cheat sheet for infrequently used functions. Installation very easy in a vehicular application. Would purchase again and recommend to others. ... show more

  • Better with Chirp
Style: Mobile Radio
This is a great radio! My first I use as a base station that I planned to use as a mobile once I got it loaded with all my local frequencies. However the Retevis CPS that you use to program the radio is absolute trash and it would have taken far to long to enter everything to make it a viable mobile option for me. I had been using it as a base for several months and a few others on my local repeater had them also and we all agreed that we loved the radio and hated the CPS. I recently updated Chirp to program a different radio and happened to notice that it was now supported. I quickly connected my base and was very pleased with the Chirp support so I ordered a second one to use as a mobile. There are better mobile units out there but for the money this one is great bang for the buck. The menus are strange and don't make much sense but with Chirp it's very easy. ... show more

  • Not for beginners or anyone that doesn't have patience
Style: Mobile Radio
Pros: Not bad pricing for a 40 watt GMRS mobile station. Comes with everything you need minus the power supply to power this bad boy. Does come with a lengthy Anderson connector and bare wire on the other, so you can crimp your own connector to the other end comes with a stand that you can improvise and mount to whatever you can Software is available to make programming channels easier but need to use some greater brain power to use and/or navigate. Simple software but complicated in a sense. Cons(Sorta): Channels 1-22 are coded so if you're trying to talk to your friends right away, you can't unless random luck you're both on the pre programmed coded channels. You are able to do everything through the menu, but will need the manual and legends to know where to go and translate the acronyms. This will take a long time so downloading the software will make it easier. Software is not user friendly or straight forward. Need to use more brain power to troubleshoot and problem solve where to go and what to do. Example - Programming a channel, you have to "unlock/open" the channel to be able to edit This has a left channel and right. If you program one side it will not save to the other. Have to do double work. Copy/paste doesn't work when setting the frequency. Have to input everything manually. So if you're trying to copy from Chirp and paste channels in the Retevis software, it won't work. Manually inputting data limited to 6 character name (not a con) GMRS you're not allowed to use 8-14 but you can listen. In conclusion- One will have to do some work to get this thing operating the way you want. I like the brain being exercised but does suck that you can't do things right out the box. Would say this is for the more advance and having a PC to be able to program makes life easier but not easy. I still like this mobile station but work has to be put in for it Additionally - Retevis customer service, emailing, isn't the the greatest. Chinese tech support, so time difference and language barrier. I asked about is there a easier way to program left and right channels. I get a response of "can't find your order, what is your order number, what do you use the radio for, and other things not related to the question I had. Update 5/23/24 - Their emails got sent to my spam folder. Discovered that one of their workers has been constantly sending me emails about a "misunderstanding" and still continues to ask about my order and/or where I placed my order. Making an excuse of they have many departments. I Already got help from another worker that understood me better and already helped with my question about programming. Here's the email from someone named Lewis Li: "You may not misunderstand my mean when I asked your order number in last email. We're a big company with many sales departments, normally, every sales department service and support own platforming customers. So I firstly want to know your order ID and order platform (Amazon, ebay, or aliexpress, etc.), then inform our professional corresponding after-sale service to support you at once. Today my colleague tell me that you may not satisfied with our service, then leave a negative review on Amazon, could you help us remove or change it, thanks so much!" After being bombarded by emails that have been copied and pasted. I feel like they need to be knocked down 1 more star because of the harassment and constant emails of the same thing, but 3 stars isn't negative to me. 1-2 star is. 3 stars is fair. I based this on the ease of use, which it's not easy at all, customer service, and the product. Lewis Li - Don't try to bully someone into giving a rating that you or the product don't deserve. You messed up so learn from it. Accept what the rating and review is. YOU and your team may be misunderstanding my review. Unless 3 stars is "negative" to you and your team. Someone on your team lied to you about me leaving a negative review. ... show more
