This is a great drum overall, but there are a couple things to watch out for. This instrument should not be shipped without packaging (if it arrives only in the box with no bubble wrap or other packaging) as the instrument is then most likely already damaged. What I mean by damaged is the head goes out of tune and because this drum can't be tuned, it's forever going to NOT sound the way it was intended to sound. It should have a very sharp attack when playing on the edge of the drum and if it isn't super responsive in that area then most likely something happened during transit. Likewise, DON'T drop the drum too many times or this will also happen. This instrument used to be priced closer to $50-$60 which I believe is still the correct price range. For over $100 you're better off getting a Meinl cajon or bongos which sound better and last way longer. ... show more

Love the sound. Love the rainforest print. Had great fun myself playing these, and they work well on so many levels. Whether you have them between your knees, flat on the floor, using just your hands, or with the rainbow mallets from kids buffalo drums... ya just can't find something more fun and versatile. This drum is no crappy kids' drum. In my opinion, it shines in two major areas: Durability and Sound Disclaimer: The manufacturer recommends this drum for 5+ years olds. I'm just a bad grandparent. I bought the 16" gathering drum 6 months ago for my granddaughter's 1st birthday. I wanted something she would have fun with now and sturdy enough that maybe, just maybe, she would have years from now. I thought this drum had a chance and I was right. She climbs on it, sits on it, and so far after 6 months, no harm to her or the drum. But the most important thing about it (after her safety of course) is she actually PLAYS IT! They say in the description that it "produces a big, fun sound." Yep, that is correct but it's also what I would call a genuine drum tone with balanced resonance. Not a "boing boing" sound you get from plastic toy drums. This is an instrument that can produce music, not just make noise. Comes with two mallets with rubber ball tips. One of my granddaughter's is lost already. You might want to consider getting an extra pair. ... show more

I take my 9 month old to a library baby class and they have 1 of the 22” drums. I purchased the 16” one because he is so obsessed over it at the class. It is extremely durable and well made. It’s pricey for a toddler drum but it will definitely last a very long time and it keeps him busy!
