We bought this for our grandson‘s fourth birthday (along with a few yards of sand). It took a little learning, but once he figured it out, it has been his favorite outdoor toy. He is turning eight soon. He still uses it even though he has physically outgrown it. His younger sister also enjoys it. One winter, it stayed outside. This toy is absolutely perfect. It was very easy to assemble. It’s surprisingly capable. My nephew lost his mind when he saw it. Every adult who saw it said that they’d take it if my nephew didn’t want it. The rear deck made a great place to mount a little truck box I made for it. So adding fun accessories is doable with a little imagination. It is very easily disassembled for transport. The paint seems surprisingly durable for such an inexpensive toy. All around I couldn’t be more happy with this product. I could not recommend this toy more for a little one who’s obsessed with excavation equipment. He’s not even 3, but was able to easily figure out how to smoothly operate the bucket. I might fabricate some mounting points for some wheel locks, the only trouble he had was staying in digging position because I didn’t have the ground perfectly level. This gift was for my birthday boy (turning 3), who is in all things construction. He got the hang of it right away. I chose the model with the wheels, a bit pricier but so much easier to move around and more versatile. There is a little space between the back wheels under the seat where I attached a little box for his "tools" or a bucket or "hard hat" whatever. I chose the Big Dig for its known track record, the toy seems sturdy enough (time will tell), one just has to watch for the screws maybe getting loose with time. The wheels are plenty wide. I took one star off for the instructions that came with the toy however, as I found the pictures confusing and the instructions not detailed enough. It is not hard to put together and does not take long, I just would have appreciated better guidance. Tips: 1) the 2 long prongs stemming from the seat go in-between the prongs from the handle and the bucket; 2) you will need the little cardboard like tube to put together the wheels. The washer with the "teeth" does not seem to fit at first, but you really need to place the tube on it and hammer the tube that will then push that washer down in its proper place. Perfect for a 3 year old whose world is trucks and construction equipment. Within a day, he mastered control of the digger. Well constructed, solid metal parts. Comes semi-constructed and was easy to put together.
