It seems like most of the locations one would need to drill a posthole there's no A/C outlet nearby. That's certainly the case when fencing in a couple acres of pasture. This cordless post hole digger makes everything so much easier. It's very easy and intuitive to use and produces a surprising amount of torque for a battery powered tool. The build quality seems very solid and I have confidence it will dig many post hole during its lifetime. It also has uses beyond digging post holes. In fact, just about any time you want to dig a hole this could make the job faster, especially in hard soil where it's difficult to dig by hand. Dig a few post holes with this tool and knock out the dirt between them to get a larger hole started. Or use it for smaller holes for planting. It's actually pretty fun to use so don't be surprised if you start finding excuses to dig holes. ... show more

My wife is the gardener; I am not. Unfortunately, I am the Sherpa; when she needs a hole dug for a new plant, that's me. When I saw the Redback 40V Earth Auger Cordless Post Hole Digger, I knew I had a new best friend. My impressions: - It's big and heavy. Not so heavy that it can't be lifted, but you don't want to carry it a long way without some type of wagon or dolly to help. Or maybe you do, if you like a workout while working in the garden. That's what I'm trying to avoid. - It's perfect for digging post holes and smaller plants, and almost perfect for larger ones. The plan is to avoid as much physical work as possible, and this tool makes that happen. - Hard earth or soft earth, it's going down! This tool has a lot of power; it had no issues digging down through the driest part of my yard. - The manual is not very helpful, and in some cases just incorrect. - It's very pricey for what you get. Full disclosure: i received this through the Amazon Vine program, so it was free to me. However, in glancing through the 'Compare with similar items' that Amazon helpfully includes on the product page, this unit is the most expensive. I did not see anything on the product to justify the higher price. This auger does what it does well, and thus allows me to avoid excessive work in the garden. This cordless hole digger makes digging holes very convenient. It has really helped me in trenching out holes to get my new fence posts in the ground.     • A bit heavy, but gets the job done

We recently used this to build our chicken coop/run, and it works REALLY well, even up north where the ground is partway frozen this time of year. Yes it is heavy, but, again, it works. My only issue is that the on/off switch doesn't turn it on or off--it changes the direction (off is forward, on is reverse), which was extremely confusing at first and I though it might be broken, and the manual does not really touch on this, so I had to Google it. ... show more

I'm an older seasoned automotive technician, I'm reviewing this product based on my many years of experience in the field using high quality tools and equipment. Ordered this to use in our garden and around the property. Unit is nice sized with a big battery and battery charger. I'm disappointed that the unit is too short, by the time you get a foot down in the ground you are bent clear over. The instruction manual is about the worst I have seen in a while, says the forward/reverse switch is on the back of the unit, it's not. The sales ad said its on the right handle on the bottom, it isn't. There is an on/off switch on the top of the right handle, which isn't an on/off switch even though it is marked that way, its the forward/reverse switch (should have a F and R marked on it). Unit seems to have plenty of gear reduction for digging, so far the battery seems okay, but haven't used it a lot yet. Just not overly impressed like I had hoped I would be. Price point is considered high for this item. ... show more

So ours was spinning the wrong way out of the box. The instructions showed where the button to change direction was, but ours had nothing there. The listing has another false spot. The ON/OFF button is actually the direction changer. Mildly annoying, but it works! Because this is battery powered please remember that the battery will run down faster with more resistance. Tougher dirt, rocks and clay will drain the energy faster than freshly tilled garden soil. ... show more
