Description

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERAn electric, searing memoir by the original rebel girl and legendary front woman of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre.Hey girlfriend I got a proposition goes something like this: Dare ya to do what you wantKathleen Hanna’s band Bikini Kill embodied the punk scene of the 90s, and today her personal yet feminist lyrics on anthems like “Rebel Girl” and “Double Dare Ya” are more powerful than ever. But where did this transformative voice come from?In Rebel Girl, Hanna’s raw and insightful new memoir, she takes us from her tumultuous childhood to her formative college years and her first shows. As Hanna makes clear, being in a punk “girl band” in those years was not a simple or safe prospect. Male violence and antagonism threatened at every turn, and surviving as a singer who was a lightning rod for controversy took limitless amounts of determination. But the relationships she developed during those years buoyed her, including with her bandmates Tobi Vail, Kathi Wilcox, JD Samson, and Johanna Fateman. And her friendships with musicians like Kurt Cobain, Ian MacKaye, Kim Gordon, and Joan Jett reminded her that, despite the odds, the punk world could still nurture and care for its own. Hanna opens up about falling in love with Ad-Rock of the Beastie Boys and her debilitating battle with Lyme disease, and she brings us behind the scenes of her musical growth in her bands Le Tigre and The Julie Ruin. She also writes candidly about the influential Riot Grrrl movement, documenting with love its grassroots origins but critiquing its exclusivity. In an uncut voice all her own, Hanna reveals the hardest times along with the most joyful―and how they continue to fuel her revolutionary art and music. This landmark feminist memoir pulls no punches.Riot Grrrl Origins: Go behind the scenes of the grassroots feminist movement she helped ignite, with a candid look at both its power and its problems.90s Punk Scene: Experience the raw energy and real dangers of the 90s music world, with stories featuring icons like Kurt Cobain, Joan Jett, and Kim Gordon.Kathleen’s Career: Follow Hanna’s journey leading seminal bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, fighting for a place on stage in the face of antagonism and violence. Fantastic!
Format: Kindle
Once you start, you don't want it to end. What a fascinating woman! So strong & inspiring & many times she had me laughing! She's quick, witty, self-deprecating, and humble. And her music with Bikini Kill & Le Tigre is awesome. I'm just getting into it in the last year. Also, i highly recommend the doc about Kathleen, The Punk Singer. Especially if you remember 90s grunge & Riot Grrrl but Kathleen was so much more than that! And she gave SO MANY GIRLS a voice, an outlet! I wish I hadn't been too young to benefit from her amazing spirit & voice. ... show more

5 Stars
Format: Hardcover
As a Kathleen Hanna fan I had a feeling I’d love this book, but even still I was blown away by her honesty, her self awareness, and her strength in sharing her story. Covering her experiences growing up, to her time in Bikini Kill, The Julie Ruin, and Le Tigre, her complicated relationship with the Riot Grrrl movement, and her relationship with Ad-Rock in short, digestible chapters you get raw, honest glimpses into her life over the years as you witness her growth and evolution as an artist and a person. It’s clear she’s done a lot of work to reflect and heal, and the people and experiences she shares are written about with grace and nuance. She handles her experiences and her descriptions of others in her life with such care in spite of the pain she’s experienced, and it’s really inspiring to read. Ultimately, this is a really wonderful memoir from someone who has not only lived, but really taken the time to examine her experiences and how they’ve shaped her. This could not have been an easy book to write but it was an honor as a reader to be on the receiving end of such an inspiring, thoughtful life story. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC, and thank you ME for proactively preordering this book when it was announced last August. I'm so happy to have this on my shelf. ... show more

Rebel Woman
Format: Hardcover
Honest, interesting, important, tense, funny, inspiring. I always liked Bikini Kill and Le Tigre so I wasn't surprised to find that Hanna's writing is as good as her music. Not for everyone, I guess, but I'm a 61 year old white guy and I really enjoyed it. Bought it for my daughter and I expect she'll be into it, too. ... show more

A Beautifully and Intelligently Written Memoir
Format: Audiobook
I LOVED this book. Kathleen courageously navigating a decades long journey wrought with sexual abuse; violent family dynamics; economic hardship; chronic illness; stalking and harassment; and betrayal and gaslighting at every turn, often times by people she loved and trusted most, and perseveres throughout, scratching and clawing her way through this perplexing maze many of us sadly refer to as "life." Her seemingly endless horrific encounters with menacing men fueled her feminist rage, and her desperately needed voice, which not only gave her purpose but empowered so many survivors of sexual abuse; letting us know that we were not alone and giving us fuel to come forward and confront our trauma as well as our abusers. On a personal note, I met Kathleen decades ago through a mutual friend at the Positive Force house. We talked briefly, and she told me about how Courtney Love had viciously attacked her for no apparent reason. She also spoke to me about being belittled for being a stripper. Kathleen came across to me as beautiful yet fragile, but also headstrong and determined. She was petite compared to Courtney Love who is tall like me, and I remember thinking what a horrible bully CL was. I also have chronic Lyme Disease as well as other chronic illnesses. Most people with CLD cannot be healed with antibiotics so I'm wondering how she's been able to keep it at bay all this time. I biohack regularly and wonder if she's ever tried it herself. I feel like she's a great candidate for it, because it could definitely prevent her symptoms from returning. In conclusion, Kathleen Hanna will go down in history as one of the most important contemporary voices for feminism and female rage regarding violence against women. She empowers so many of us and was so brave to write this memoir. I used to write as well and wrote and published a short story about an abusive boarding school I attended as a kid, but I've never been able to pull off a lifelong memoir like this although if I could, it would be a boomer. This story is simultaneously raw, brutal, beautiful and inspirational. She is clearly highly intelligent and articulate, as well as humble and introspective. Kathleen, thank you for being a voice for all of us. ... show more

Loved it!!!
Format: Hardcover
I'd first heard about Bikini Kill back in 1994 by a friend at school, but it was impossible to find their music anywhere because I didn't live near any good music stores. Luckily it's much easier to access music now. I've been following Kathleen on social media for years, and saw her documentary The Punk Singer, so I made sure to preorder her book when she announced it. I absolutely loved it!! Her honesty could be quite brutal at times, and I'm relieved that she's finally able to enjoy some true happiness now. I also appreciate her speaking up for so many years. I'm passing this book on to my oldest daughter who is starting college this year. I highly recommend it! ... show more

Larger than life
Format: Hardcover
I have a bunch of memoirs sitting in my library that I need to read from Thurston Moore to Miki Berenyi and to Alice Bag. I decided to read Rebel Girl before the others. It's not that I'm a bigger fan of Hanna's more than those mentioned above, it's because her story has always been rather interesting and constantly changing. I have always disagreed with her and her comrades' thoughts on Individualism vs. Collectivism. I guess Ayn Rand's non fiction is unlikely in Hanna's library. Regardless, I was still curious on Where does the sharpened anger come from? What really happened with her and the rockstars of the 90s? This and more gets answered honestly and bravely. While I can't relate to most of the book, I can, however, relate to the general themes of love, loss and giving into creative abandon. In addition, there were some bands, writers and artists that are mentioned in the book that I wasn't familiar with, but will definitely be checking out. I recommend this book for her fans as well as her detractors. ... show more
