I've been using knives for decades now, from wood carving knives to camp knives, and I always look for tools that feel balanced without unnecessary frills. This RAVS wood carving knife caught my eye because of its straightforward design aimed at both novices and those with more experience under their belt. Right out of the box, the blade impressed me with its sharpness. It slices through soft woods like basswood effortlessly, making initial cuts precise and clean. The high carbon steel with titanium coating holds that edge well during short sessions, and the rosewood handle fits comfortably in my hand, providing a natural grip that reduces fatigue over an hour or so of use. I tested it on some simple projects, and it handled the curves and details without much resistance. That said, there's a noticeable drawback with the handle's rivet, which sticks out just enough to catch my thumb and hand during extended holds, creating an irritating snag that could lead to blisters if you're not careful. Also, a sticker on the handle left behind a sticky residue that's tough to remove without scratching the wood, which was a minor annoyance to start with. I just started getting interested in wood carving. I have a large collection of knives, but none like this. First of all, the blade shape is fantastic, allowing me to remove large amounts of material or make small, precision cuts. I'm learning, so there will be no photos of my work. Trust me, the feeling of confidence the knife gives me does not match my skill level yet. It makes me want to keep trying because the knife feels so good to use. The blade steel is one I have on several knives and love it's great overall balance, with ease of sharpening and good edge retention. It's one of the things that attracted me to this knife. Now the handle is sublime. The way it's shaped and curved gives you excellent control with the knife wanting to stay back in your hand. I was worried about no finger guard, but the quality of the design keeps the knife in your palm where it belongs with you fingers in total control. It's a soft feeling handle allowing me to use it for extended periods. It's about the most ergonomic knife I've ever felt, allowing you to really "feel" what the knife is doing, making you feel integrated into the carving process. The brass R on both sides of the rivet adds to the knifes classy, custom look. If you're a master carver, this knife will make your skill come to life. If your like me, this knife will keep you motivated to just get better and better. A hobby should be fun, and with this knife giving such control and cutting ability, it will keep it fun as your skill level progresses. From my experience with knives, this is a bargain for the quality materials and genius execution. And lest I forget the sheath, It's made of a really soft feeling, high quality leather. Highly Recommended.
