  • Great addition to my Smithy
Worth the price, this is a very well-machined set. I installed it on a Smithy CB-1220 XL that I've had since 1997. How did I get along without this accessory? Instead of T-nuts, the original Smithy tool post is mounted with a cap bolt that is machined with flats on two sides, and milling the included large square blank would have been tedious, so I opted to drill out and tap an oversized ½" nut, then mill it slightly to fit the recess on the bottom of the rest. The stud for this set, as has been mentioned, is 7/16" - 18, so I had to redrill the hole in the rest as well. Now I have a tap and a drill bit that I didn't have before, so it's all good. The studs holding the height adjustment wheel on a couple of the tool holders were not tightened all the way, so when I went to tighten the jam nuts, the setting changed. Note that the studs have Allen sockets, so you can snug them down in their holes before setting the height. I've used both 3/8" and ½" tools with no problems. The range of height adjustment is very generous. I had overlooked the inclusion of a two-wheel knurling tool— I misread the description to say it included just the holder, so that was a pleasant surprise. I tried it out on cold-rolled steel, and was delighted. The cut-off holder also includes a blade, another plus. Note that it is designed to use parallel blades rather than tapered ones. The post is held in place with a nut. After a while, I got tired of digging out a 3/4" wrench to change cutter position, so I turned out a threaded cap with a handle. Alternatively, you could weld a handle to the original nut. This set has already made a huge difference in the ease of setting up my lathe, and the price is right. ... show more

  • Works great on my 10" Logan
I used a milling attachment on one of my Logan lathes to machine the "T" Nut, other than it taking a couple of hours to machine, the end result was worth the time. I had no issues machining the nut with the exception of only being able take a .020" cut per pass due to using a lathe with a milling vise, (not ideal). The tool post fits nicely and even with a 1/2" cutting tool installed adjusts to the correct height. I test cut some mild steel using the new tool post and it seems fine. I replaced the plastic handle with the larger one, pictured. I happened to have a different handle in my junk drawer, this is not necessary, I simply like it better. I have only had the tool post for a day but I have every reason to believe that it was well worth the $150 price. If there are any future issues that come about I will update my review. ... show more

  • Pleasantly surprised
I initially bought their BXA based on the answer to a question about the AXA fitting an old Atlas 12". The BXA didn't fit. It's holds the tool too high. I promptly returned it. The return was quick and easy. I did have to pay $25 return shipping, but as soon as the UPS driver picked it up my refund was issued and I promptly ordered the AXA. All I can say is if an oloris really is worth twice as much it must be a helluva tool. If you have an old Atlas you'll have to either mill the nut or drill and tap a 9/16 -8 hole in a piece of bar stock. I didn't have a tap to hand so I annealed the nut in my forge and cut it down with an angle grinder. It's nice that it's not a metric thread, though. If you're looking for a reasonably priced tool post, this is it. ... show more

  • A well-made set at a good price.
This is a well-made set at a good price. I am an avid DIY-er, and I needed a QC Tool Post for my Southbend lathe. This item is very sturdy, and once you get a height set on the tool holder, it stays there. The toolholders also have a "warped" washer of spring steel between the top and bottom nuts. The position of the bottom nut determines the height of the tool post holder. The washer allows you to finger tighten the top nut onto the bottom nut once the bottom nut is set, and have enough friction to hold their position, yet still allow you to turn them together for minor adjustments. The one drawback is the piece of steel used for the T-slot on your lathe compound slide. It is quite large and thick to accommodate the varying lathes that it might be used on. However, for my South Bend Heavy 10, I would have had to do a lot of filing. What I did instead was to find two pieces of flat bar of different widths--the wider one would fit into the bottom of the slot, and the narrower above it. I then beveled their edges then welded them together. I drilled and tapped the center hole--which is actually an English thread size (9/16" IIRC) and pitch, not metric. Some have commented that the set screws are too soft. I haven't found this to be the case, but it probably results from the excess variability of quality found in some import items. I put it all together and it works like a champ!! ... show more

  • good product & good value
I bought this because I couldn't find a standard lantern style tool post of the correct dimensions. I don't have access to a milling machine so I bought a "T" slot nut from the internet. It fits my 9" South Bend well. It is a little big for it but very solid. I consider this a good value because I didn't just get a tool post, I got five holders with it. If I had to pay $15 for each holder I would be out another $75. I'm not all that happy with the cut off holder though. My research for that kind of cut off blade comes up with expensive items. I'll get a different kind of cutoff tool that will mount in the turning tool holder. I'd recommend this to others. ... show more

  • Appears to have overcome my tool post issue.
I ordered after way to much research to get absolute identification on wether a axa or a bxa was required. I run an old Husky 7" x 36" lathe, after fitting the new t- slot I set my 3/8" tool on center found there was still about 3/16" I could lower the holder. So it should work with any 7" or larger machine. Has to machine off a load of material to fit t- slot. ... show more
