  • Better than OEM - Or Not... (UPDATED)
UPDATE: I installed this about seven months ago and now the red fan of the two is making the same horrific rattling/scraping noise that the OEM fan did, sometimes stopping entirely. Original Review: My less-than-year-old MSI GS65 Stealth Thin starting making a horrific grinding noise while playing a game. Apparently, this is a common issue. I got this fan and the CPU version from the same brand in two days. Taking apart MSI laptops can be an intimidating process, but it's not that big of a deal. I did it within about 40 minutes with the help of some excellent YouTube videos. While I did order thermal paste, I was able to replace both this GPU and the CPU fan without removing the cooling tubes and all that. The "factory seal" is really the hardest part because it feels like the very thin rear cover is going to bend. Just go slow and easy... it's all pretty simple. I also took photos of each screw's location on the motherboard, since there are so many unused holes. I never referred back to them though. Even with its upside-down motherboard, replacing these fans is totally doable by almost anyone with the right tools and video guidance. You can find computer repair tool kits all over Amazon for maybe $20. Get one with a plastic flathead/pick so you don't mar the WiFi connections and other various clips that hold wires in. For me, this was a much better option than sending it off for three weeks, even if it was covered by warranty. So far, the fans are holding up perfectly. ... show more

  • Running great
EDIT 3/23/20: Well as stated in my original review, the product worked perfectly on arrival. After about a week of pretty average use, one of the fans (the bigger, black one) started to be inconsistent with its speed, make occasional scraping noises, and sometimes stop completely, not being able to move until I take the back off the laptop and spin it a few times manually. This will get it going again, but with the same inconsistent speeds and rattling noises. I'm downgrading my review to 2 stars for now - I am going to give the benefit of the doubt and order another one. If that one fails, 1 star and no more of my business. Just installed this fan into my GS65 and it works perfectly. Only complaint is that is seems to run at a slightly lower RPM than the OEM fan. This one runs at ~6500 max, while the OEM one would reach ~7200 (in my experiences). I doubt it will impact performance much but it is something to take note of if you're trying to squeeze every last frame out of your laptop. It does come with two small tools (a screwdriver and a prying tool), both of which are cheap and not very useful. You can get the job done with them, but you will need a LOT of patience; the screwdriver doesn't latch onto the fan's screws particularly well. I recommend having a tiny phillips screwdriver handy. Also note: No thermal paste needed! Removing the fan can be done without messing with the cooling pipes. There are a few pieces of black tape that needed to be removed, but once those were off, installation was very straightforward. Since this review is being posted just an hour or two after I installed it, I cannot speak to the longevity of the fan. As of now, easy 5 stars. Will update this review should anything change. ... show more

  • So far so good MSI MSI GS65 Stealth Thin 8RF
So far so good. If I run into issues like the others mentioned I'll be sure to return to update this review. It was pretty easy to replace. These so far behave just the same as the OEM. I get the same reported max speeds as the OEM fans. Ifixit has a guide but I'd like to point out that the guide shows removing the whole cooling system. This isn't necessary. All you have to do is remove the screws from the bottom, then it pops off (it'll make a snap noise this is fine). Then two screws on the main board, the screw holding the wifi module, and remove the ribbon connectors (don't miss the small one at the top center). Disconnect the wifi card and slip it through the gap below the fans (don't disconnect the antenna unless you have to, it's a pain to reconnect). Then lift from the side opposite of the headphone jack and pull out the main board. Flip it over, remove the small screws holding the fans in place, disconnect the fans (note which fan plugs into where), flip the board over and remove the fans. From here just go in reverse. As I said, ifixit had a guide, but you don't have to remove the whole cooling system. It might not be a bad idea if you have any other cooling issues to put in new thermal compound, but it's not necessary. ... show more

  • Perfect fit
Highly recommended replacement for GPU fan on G65. Same day shipping and perfect fit. Smartly the MSI G65 uses the same screw size for the case and mobo - with the sole exception of the wifi card. Replacement of the GPU fan can be done without having to do more than remove bottom screws, a few screws on the mobo, flip mobo, replace GPU fan, and reverse process. Additional recommended items are heat resistant tape, guitar pick (or spudger), and patience. ... show more

  • Not perfect but it works
The fan housing is not shaped the same as the GS65 Stealth CPU fan that was in the computer. The new housing hit components on the motherboard that prevented it from being installed. Modifying the fan housing (removing some metal with tin-snips) did the trick. The fans in stalled and worked as promised and were quiet for the load test. Not sure about longevity; the fan seems ok but based on other reviews I expect to replace this fan before a year is up. If you're not used to doing such things, don't. If you've done mods before, it's simple. ... show more

  • Solid replacement fan
The replacement fan is a good but not perfect fit in place of the stock fan. That said, the fitment is still decent. However, once installed, it became noticeably quieter than the CPU fan, which was not replaced at the same time. Now even under full load, the GS65 stays relatively quiet. Too bad the unit did not include any replacement black tape that covers the fan and the exhaust fins. Either way, solid part, solid value. ... show more
