  • Could have been better
Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Project CARS 3
Learning the game was deviating from the more sim style racing of the first two Project Cars games for an arcade style racer, a lot of the gaming community voiced their concerns before the game’s release. My favorite type of games are racing games (both arcade and the more sim style games), so I wanted to check it out for myself. I have to say even for me, someone who has enjoyed many games that most didn’t like, I was a bit disappointed with Project Cars 3. The game plays a lot like Grid, but doesn’t seem as polished as the Grid game released on the PS4. The graphics are not as sharp - there’s a lot of jagged edges on objects - even on a PS4 Pro. In wet conditions, the reflections in the wet surfaces move around oddly, and even reflections in your car’s paint job move blocky. The game looks decent, but just looks like it could have been better. They designed the game to make it appeal to a wide range of gamers, with a great deal of driving assists built in. I found the assists to be very annoying, and it didn’t take long for me to set the assists to “professional” which turns all the assists off. The heads up display can get a little cluttered as well, so I turned all the HUD elements off. With all that turned off, it started to feel more like a Project Cars game to me. There are nav points during the races that show ideal race lines - I actually like this over an actual racing line aid - it helps point you to the spots to be on the track without providing exactly where you should be on the track at all times. This is an arcade style racing game, so things like tire wear, fuel consumption, and pit stops are not in this game. Career mode is arranged by car class. You begin with a tutorial race, and once complete you are given enough money to buy one of three E class cars. Then, you enter a series of races in the E class, working your way up to D class and so on. You unlock races by accomplishing goals - there are three goals per race, ranging from beating a lap time, mastering corners, drafting opponents, overtaking opponents, etc. Races are only a few laps long. As you accomplish goals (medals) and earn XP, you are awarded in-game currency that can be used to buy cars, buy performance parts for cars you own, and even purchase the ability to unlock a race event if you haven’t earned enough medals to auto unlock the event. You have the option of customizing the cars in your garage with various paint jobs, liveries, brand decals, rims, and tire brands. You can also install various parts to improve your car’s performance, even allowing a lower class car to be upgraded to higher classes. You use in-game currency to buy parts, but one thing I am a little disappointed in with this system is if you ever want to switch to a part you already purchased, you have to pay in-game currency to swap to that part. It’s not a lot of money, but if I already own the part, why do I need to spend in-game cash to swap it out? As you increase your car’s performance, if you are like me, you will swap parts in and out as you find the right mix of power and handling, and paying to switch to parts you already own is just a little frustrating. There’s also custom events - my favorite part of the game. Here you can select your car - using either a car you own or selecting a “loan car” (giving you access to any car in the game), selecting your track, number of laps, type of opponents’ car class, weather...I expect to spend a lot of time in this mode. There are bugs in the game, but Slighty Mad Studios has been addressing them through various patches. A few at the moment involve some lighting issues, a custom paint job car not showing up in thumbnail images in menus, your car turning into a red paint job in the second race of a two-race championship, the mechanic always congratulating you on your “first championship” even though you’ve already won several, rims switching to a different rim style when choosing a color for the rims...bugs, but not necessarily game breaking bugs. Hopefully these will be addressed in future patches. Overall, I don’t know if I can fully recommend the game. If you are a dedicated racing game enthusiast, this may be a game to check out - maybe after a few more patches and a price drop or two. If you aren’t that much into racing games, this may be a game to pass on. As always, if you are on the fence, I encourage you to check out some gameplay online before you decide to pick the game up for yourself. ... show more

  • it’s not bad
Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Project CARS 3
it is not as bad as many reviewer‘s say it is. it is not a HARD CORE racing simulator like project cars 2, but frankly that aspect is what I like about it.

  • It's Essentially A Mobile Racing Game
Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Project CARS 3
I wonder what happened. Was Slightlymad working on a mobile racing game, and executives decided to move it to consoles as PC3? This is not an immersive simulator as PC2 was, and for me, a Gran Turismo player, that was fine. What isn't fine is all the menus and car customization menus yell 'mobile game' to me. The menu buttons are oversized and simplified. The HUD is not nearly as pretty as it was in PC2. The tracks and sky art look fine. But the wet weather looks like it's from the previous generation. There are times when this game feels like a cart racer. The physics don't seem consistent. I really do think this started development as a mobile game. And $30 for the DLC. That's more than what I paid for the game. Pass. I might finish the campaign and then give it away. Shame. In my hunt for the best racing games for the PS4, I will soon move on to the pair of Assetto Corsa games. I might have better luck there finding balance between simulation and accessible racer. I found PC2 to be too difficult overall, but PC3 is so simplified it's annoying. ... show more

  • Project Cars in Name Only
Platform: PlayStation 4 Edition: Project CARS 3
TLDR: This is NOT a Project Cars game. This is nothing but a 98% asset import of the Need for Speed SHIFT series. This is one of the worst racing games I've ever played. The graphics are horrible even on a PS4 Pro with blurriness abound, godawful reflections both on track and the car, and weather effects that look like they robbed Farming Simulator. The sound is muffled and almost barely audible no matter what car you drive or even when using a headset. These sounds also don't vary no matter what parts you upgrade either. All that happens is the car's "traits" increase, and with enough of those you get promoted to the next "class". Yay. The tracks have obviously all been redesigned - possibly from pre-existing F1 assets - to accommodate the ridiculous arcade-type driving "physics", and they're NOT done well. Your car swaying wildy on straights and curves alike, some random puddle throwing you around like a tornado, all while AI cars are driving like they're glued down and weigh 10,000 pounds. And this utterly stupid "aggression" modifier making cars all around you twitch and randomly swerve into your way like a trip on the Jersey turnpike just adds to the "realism". Sure. Add that these physics also not only encourage wild driving, but necessitate turning all driving assists OFF and DRIFTING like a ghymkana nutcase in order to win on any difficulty above easy, just destroys the entire experience of what was a series that promoted skill, precision and car mastery to get the podium. I played a Rivals race earlier using "F1" cars at silverstone where the ghost lap cars were DRIFTING AROUND THE CORNERS. F1 cars... Drifting... And this is the driving prevalent through every single race no matter what car is being used. They should change the name of this garbage to Need for Speed SHIFT 3 because that's all this pile is, not Project Cars. ... show more
