  • More impressed than expected
The unit deserves more praise than the product listing gives it. I bought the unit to verify the tonnage of some HVAC units and troubleshoot engine cooling systems. This review is based upon initial inspection and one test of the unit. * What I like * Plastic case includes foam padding on the inside. Buttons are true mechanical buttons, not touch pads that don't always work with my fingers. Display is easy to read in direct sunlight, or dark rooms with backlight. Backlight can be turned on or off (to save batteries). Unit has auto-off, or can be switched to stay on. Unit appears to remember settings after power-off (units, duct area). Manual claims 5% accuracy for wind speed. * Entry of duct area * Two buttons allow duct area to be increased or decreased. Area changes progressively faster while button is held. Easy to set exact area with one button for increase, one button for decrease. * Power * Unit runs on three AA batteries, which I prefer to a rechargeable since unit will only be used occasionally. Product came with a USB cord, which can power the unit without any batteries installed. * Probe * Tip will fit through a 3/8" hole. Probe tip is not flexible (pro - sturdy, easy to rotate for maximum flow through sensor)(con - can't bend tip 90_deg to put up to ceiling). Probe comes with removable rubber cap to protect sensors. * What is missing * Unit does not provide relative humidity. ... show more

  • Professional-Like Measurements Possible
Working on the principle that moving air is directly correlated with a cooling effect (more wind creates more wind chill), hot wire anemometers are ideal for checking the temperature (F or C directly measured), wind velocity (fpm or m/sec indirectly from the cooling effect), and volumetric flow rate (cfm or m3/min calculated using the duct dimensions and velocity reading) inside ventilation systems. Applications are numerous including (not limited to) air conditioning systems in the home, office, commercial or automotive, dust collection systems, laboratory hoods, and etc. Measurement precision improves by increasing the number of readings taken and averaging them across the duct (air flow is generally faster in the center, and effected by friction along the sides), but one center reading is often within ten percent of the true value. Packed in a sturdy blow-mold case, the 12mm / ½ inch (maximum width) probe extends more than a meter / yard (for reach or to measure inside a duct). A rubber cap protects the sensor when not in use. Suitable for most anemometer applications to achieve professional-like measurements at a price point that could appeal to the DIYer. For professional use (where documented precision is required), I would like to have a factory calibration certificate. ... show more

  • Reliable Tool for Dialing In Airflow – Great for HVAC and Vents
I picked this up to help fine-tune airflow in some ductwork for a small HVAC upgrade I was doing, and it turned out to be a super useful little tool. It’s not one of those super heavy-duty industrial meters, but for anyone doing home or light commercial work, it hits the sweet spot. The hot wire probe is great for low airspeed situations where vane anemometers tend to struggle. I used it on both return and supply ducts to check for airflow balance, and the readings were surprisingly consistent. You just have to be a bit patient and steady when positioning the probe to avoid fluctuations, but once you get the hang of it, it's very intuitive. One of the standout features is being able to measure CFM and CMM after inputting vent dimensions, which helped me troubleshoot underperforming vents without any guesswork. The temperature reading was a nice bonus when I needed to confirm air coming out of a vent was actually being cooled properly. The LCD is clear and easy to read, even in dim attic lighting, and the auto-off function has saved my battery more than once when I forgot to power it down mid-project. It does come in a padded case, which keeps everything protected in my tool bag. If you're doing airflow diagnostics, balancing vents, or checking fan output, this tool definitely earns its keep. Just don’t expect lab-grade precision—this is more about practical, actionable readings on the job, and for that, it works perfectly. ... show more

  • Excellent accuracy and repeatability
I used this when installing a new HVAC system in my home. Since I was saving so much money by doing it myself, I decided to splurge on some tools. I used this to measure the CFM airflow in my ducts. I actually did it by drilling a small hole in the ductwork and inserting the probe. I did this in a few areas to get an average. I then repeated the tests to see if I got the same reading the 2nd and 3rd times. All of the readings across all three attempts were within about 3%-5% so that is plenty accurate for me. I know there are less invasive ways to use it but I wanted the most accurate readings possible which is why I drilled the holes and inserted it directly into the air stream. It comes with everything you need (including the AA batteries) and a nice carrying case. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this for a DIYer like me. I'm not a pro so I won;t comment on that side of it but it worked perfectly for what I needed. ... show more

  • Helps take the guess work out of how much air is moving through your diffusers
My house has a basement and two upper floors and the airflow to each room varies considerably. Until I got this device, it was just an educated guess by using my hand and incense sticks to get an idea of how much air was coming out. This device can give you a decent measurement of the airflow as well as the air temperature. I found the screen was bright enough for any indoor use and the unit is pretty sturdy. Read the instructions before trying to use the unit and you will find it's pretty straightforward. For my use as a handyman and homeowner, this unit provides the functions I need for a decent price. ... show more
