  • Average quality veneer & particle board headboard. Well illustrated instructions, but tedious as physical parts aren't labeled.
Size: Double/Queen Color: Washed Black
Headboard was well packed in a thick and sturdy cardboard box with no visible damage to the box. Initial frustration (as another reviewer noted) that none of the parts were labeled -- and it was therefore needlessly time consuming to label them myself with post-it-notes to make sure that I assembled the parts properly. Once I doped out which boards corresponded to the installation diagram, the diagrams themselves were clear -- with one exception. The images used to describe the placement of the two, smallest pieces that serve to separate the interior shelf into three slots (referred to as, "gables" and depicted in the instructions on page 3 of the booklet and marked in images as "H2") were reversed. In Step 6, There is a notice to make sure that the veneered edge of the gables faces to the front, but when you assemble it that way, you're not able to see the cam lock inserts as shown in the illustration of Step 6 on page 9, and it took a second to insure that we were in fact attaching them properly. I've also assembled a similar storage style headboard that's sold by Ikea. The cam locks and screws/bolts that came with this headboard were all metal and we didn't have any problems with any of the hardware. The Ikea version arrived with very fragile plastic cam locks and several were defective and snapped.... requiring a trip to the store to replace them. However, parts in the Ikea version were labeled. Reduction of a star is for the failure to stamp or otherwise mark the pieces for assembly -- as well as for the extremely thin and brittle nature of the veneer. As noted above, the box was constructed of a superior grade, reinforced cardboard and was in good shape when it arrived. The pieces were tightly packed and secured both with thin, flat Styrofoam and blown foam encased in plastic and molded into the box to prevent the pieces from slipping around and becoming damaged. Nevertheless, there were numerous small chips in the edges of several of the pieces and when screwing in the cam lock screws (and I was very careful to line up holes and start the screws directly without tilting them), the veneer around several of the screw holes flaked off. They do include a felt tip marker that covers the exposed light yellow particle board that's just below the veneer's surface. I used a palm sized Skil rechargeable battery powered screwdriver with a #2 Phillips head bit -- which always makes assembly of things with lots of screws go a lot faster. Although for this project, if you had a hand held ratcheting screwdriver, you would be fine (I used a flat head bit in my ratcheting screwdriver as well -- to turn the cam locks. The instructions didn't specify the size screwdriver(s) required. In our installation -- I intended on drilling a hole through the upper back panel in order to run a power cord through it for items we intend to place on the recessed shelf -- but after we assembled everything but that upper back piece -- I've left it off initially as the veneer is so thin that I want to make sure that we know the placement of items so I can make the smallest cuts possible. I'll update the review if we end up doing so. The upper back part is not necessary (in my opinion) and does not add any perceivable structural integrity. I believe it's essentially cosmetic and therefore if you wanted to use it and have the shelves open to the wall behind the headboard, you could do so. It is not a cardboard laminate, but sturdier and more like a very, very thin MDF (unlike similar pieces of the Ikea model). We are not attaching our head board to a bed frame, but do plan to anchor it to the wall as the baseboard and shoe molding cause the headboard to sit out from the wall about an inch and it therefore moves when even slightly touched. I don't think it's in danger of falling over, but if you're not planning to attach it to a solid bed frame (which will require you to punch out through the stabilizing pieces(H10 and H9 on the diagrams) on the lower right and left sides of the front of the headboard) you may want to consider anchoring it to the wall in order to keep it from bumping into the wall or shifting as you make the bed or set books or whatever on the shelves. Hardware to do so is not included. This might not be as much of an issue if it didn't have a shelf designed to hold things -- but it does and I think most people would be happier if it were secured to a couple of studs. You could also notch the baseboard if you wanted it to sit flush against the wall, but we may want to move the bed to another wall and aren't going to do so. Color of the item was just as seen in the image. ... show more

  • Beautiful when put together
Size: King Color: Washed Black
Only downfall is the boards don't have stickers what tell you which board is what which made it a bit more difficult putting together.

  • Decent for the money.
Size: King Color: Washed Black
Have someone to help you carry the box when it shows up, it's a manageable weight but it's so awkwardly long that you'll appreciate the help. Easy to build, however parts were not labeled at all so you just have to take a good look at everything before hand. Quality is decent, didn't come banged up or anything. Obviously it's a cheap wood but seems decently sturdy. *I did nail mine to the wall for some extra security. I also suggest using a sharpy to black out the nail heads and you really cant notice them.* ... show more

  • Disappointing...
Size: King Color: Washed Black
Very dissatisfied. I don't know why reviewers would say that the packaging was sturdy or well shipped. Upon opening the box, it was discovered that the smaller boards (I believe the side pieces) were cracked nearly in two. Being a problem solver, I thought, well okay, maybe these can be slavaged or fixed in some way. Not the case. Unpacking the box more, I found that ALL of the major boards/pieces were in even worse shape. All either cracked, or completely split in two.. including the thicker board that serves as the mantle of this headboard. The smaller pieces (such as the storage dividers) were fine. Hardware was included, but not sure if there were missing pieces or not as that would be the least of concern. If there were, that would be an easy fix to the local hardware store. But no, literally all the major components of this shipment were either damaged or broken beyond repair. The box was flimsy with no significant support. I understand that given the parts involved, the dimensions of said package would be as such. But to not adequately pack or protect the product is just asking for trouble. At least put a "fragile / handle with care" sticker on the dang thing! That being said, once we saw the package that was dropped off, my partner and I could see how problematic the packaging was (long, skinny, no support) and even enlisted a 3rd person to assist in support and moving (3rd person was supporting the middle) into the house. We were careful and didn't manhandle the package in anyway. So to see that literally almost the entire product was damaged was so disappointing and frustrating. Furthermore, I realize that the material is just particle board and not very sturdy in and of itself. I understood this upon purchase. So I guess you get what you pay for? However, I have many items that are made of the same material and even a couple of Prepac items that have arrived and were put together just fine. Including a HUGE office desk twice the size, same material, that was not this poorly damaged or packaged. I definitely fault the packaging/shipping first and foremost. To have almost the entire product arrive in this bad shape is just ridiculous. Sooo disappointed and frustrated, as I was totally looking forward to this product. This is literally the first terrible and unacceptable experience I've had. And trust me, if something were salvageable, we'd make it work. Not possible with how this product arrived. On top of that, I don't know which route would be easier to rectify... to get replacement parts, which given how the whole thing was pretty much damaged and will likely be packaged/shipped the same way (I contacted manufacturer DURING said business hours - both are PST - and yet had to leave a message, and doubt will be rectified in a timely manner); OR to have Amazon refund my purchase and have to ship this atrocity back to them, which would be a huge hassle (as I wouldn't be refunded until they receive shipment). If that's the case, don't the photos serve as enough evidence? Just shipping this crap back would probably arrive even more damaged, and what use is that? Time and convenience is not something I readily have. All in all, I would give this whole ordeal a negative rating. This is coming from someone who is easy to please and can make do with some flaws. But this is just ridiculous. Almost jealous of buyers that left good reviews since what came to me was no better than firewood. What the hell! All I wanted was this dang headboard! ... show more

  • Sleeping Soundly
Size: King Color: Washed Black
A few pieces came cracked but repairable using a washer under the bolt. Must pace self snd identify boards first and then attach accordingly. Not a true black as I had hoped but more rustic and matte. Headboard is Large and very accommodating for a California king mattress. Super Solid, heavy, and sturdy for IKEA type furniture and assembly. ... show more
