  • Preacher 1-33 +
A great collection of 1/2 of the Preacher experience. It is in my opinion, aside from reading the actual DC Vertigo comics, the next best way to delve into the Preacher's wicked world. It contains Preacher 1-33, Preacher Specials : Saint of Killers 1-4, and Cassidy Blood and Whiskey 1, along with some pin-ups, letters, sketches & more. What is Missing is the Cover art of each issue by amazing artist Glenn Fabry ( check out any Preacher issues for sale on Ebay to see what I mean), it was his cover art that 1st attracted me to buy the books, from there the Story and art from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon had me hooked for the ride. I cannot believe it's been 25 yrs since I 1st read this but (insert dinosaur joke) holding and reading this book, not online digital copies on phone, tablet or pc's is, I believe THE way to experience Preacher! I can't wait for Vol.2 August 31, 2021 ... show more

  • Exercise Discernment
Reading this after watching the first season of the TV series, I give high marks for loyalty to the written version found in this issue. I am also very impressed with the quality of the artwork, which I would rate it alone with 4 stars, at least; it clearly conveys the story and adds to it, and is creative as well as being aesthetically pleasing. The story line itself contains a good amount of action, adventure, and mystery, revealing just enough to pique initial as well as continuing interest. As a work of fiction, it has well earned its overall rating of 4.3 stars (as of this writing). Clearly, the dramatization in the TV series scaled back on the language; the dialog in this work is far harsher as the expletives are far more abundant. (Perhaps the characters really don't have a good grasp of English vocabulary and lazily toss out the expletives instead of saying what they really mean.) However, I am disappointed with the author's depiction of the hero's Christian faith. Do not expect to find realistic representations of orthodox Christianity in the attitudes or actions of the characters. Instead, the author seems to have latched on to most of the stereotypes, misinformation, and misrepresentations which are common among the majority of non-Christians in America and other secular peoples. The story would have been more enjoyable had the author done better research of Christian theology and accurately portrayed the faith that presumably motivates the hero. Instead, the scripture interpretation is inflated to greater importance than would be consistent with reality within orthodoxy, or minimized to the point of incoherence within mainstream understanding. Either way, the reader is treated to a Christian faith that is at best hyperbole and at worst heresy. In summary, it is refreshing to see a work of fiction that not only recognizes the supernatural, but embraces it. The framework for the Christian worldview (creation, fall, redemption, restoration) is not so twisted as to be unrecognizable, and is even mildly praiseworthy. It is, sadly, unfortunate that a better representation of the orthodox Christian faith could not have been woven into the plot. Therefore, exercise discernment before drawing any conclusions regarding what Christians actually believe about God, Jesus, and the historical Christian religion. ... show more

  • Get this book now!
There’s nothing more that I can say that hasn’t already been said. The paper quality and binding on this book are great and it is one beefy, well put together book. It’s Preacher so you already know the story is fantastic. Do yourself a favor and get this book before it either becomes unavailable or too expensive. ... show more

  • Affirmation of Faith
Not really, but this comic has the sort of magnetism that could draw a devout person to a thrilling life of crime. It exceeded my expectations. I was first introduced to this comic in the roaring '90s when edgy comics were hitting their high time. I was too young for it then by the standards of society but I glimpsed the intriguing artwork within issues of the popular comic magazine and price guide Wizard and a part of my mind never let go. Now, decades later I fell in love with the AMC series based on the comic. Once I finished the first season I felt the insatiable urge to delve into the source material for the series. The first issue is highly collectible, and, by my standards, highly expensive. This Kindle version was perfectly priced to allow readers like me to experience the introduction of Rev. Jesse Custer and his friends. I believe reviews should be unbiased and somewhat subjective, listing the pros and cons, but I would have to really dig deep to find anything negative to say so I will just have to stick to my guns and say that every panel was enjoyable. ... show more

  • Give it a chance! You won't be sorry.
I admit that the first few books of this were a little confusing, a little jumpy, and overall a tad slow. However, I've just finished book 5 so I decided to go back and re-read the first book now that I have a better handle on what's going on. And the only fault in this series is that it relies heavily on fore-shadowing and inside comments that the new reader has literally NO idea what it's trying to get at. However after a few books I've really gotten into the series and am thoroughly enjoying it. ... show more

  • Exactly what I expected and exactly what I hoped for.
Discovered Preacher a few months back through Comixology. Decided to buy both omnibus, got Vol 1 and was not disappointed. Quality hardcover, quality book. One of the best comic book series to exist in my opinion.

  • Good read
I have to admit I picked this up after watching the TV show. As per usual, you get more out of the book. I'm not sure I would had been able to follow the plot if I hadn't seen the show but that may be because I haven't read many year grafic novels.

  • Decent
Got this after watching the first episode of the AMC series. Although different from the premiere episode still found the story and art work very compelling. Very easy to follow. Looking forward to continue both the series and novels.
