I love the idea of this set & when using it in its barbell configuration, it seems to work very well. Unfortunately, when used as a dumbbell, it fall short. You have to screw-in the two dumbbell handles into each side of the padded, middle barbell section. The problem there is that the middle section should've been made longer & the barbell handles at least 2 inches shorter. Trying to do dumbbell or hammer curls, or flys is next-to-impossible, without risking have the end of the handle hitting you in your face. If you try to execute triceps extensions, the dumbbell handle might skewer you in the back. Simply stated, the dumbbell handles are just too long, being about 21 1/2 inches in length, compared to the roughly 14 1/2 inches of my steel dumbbell bar. The padding on the barbell section feels pretty good. It's not the greatest quality, but I understand that because you get what you pay for & I can live with this unit as a barbell. It's good as a beginner set, I'll let my grandson start off with it because the weights are adjustable enough for him to be able to handle. But at age 13, I won't let him anywhere near those 2 spears which pose as "dumbell handles". I bought it because I liked the idea of it being compact, as I have limited space. I also liked the idea of a Kettlebell, which brings up another design problem with this set. Unless you completely load up the kettlebell handle with weights, you'll find that after attaching the kettlebell handle, your knuckles will be scraping against the locking clamps. I'm just getting back into weights & wanted to ease my way back & I thought that this would be good set, as I'm not trying to get into heavy lifting at this point & time. Crazy as it sounds, despite all of its flaws, I still like the CONCEPT of this set & am not about to repack & re-ship a 77 Lb set. While I like this set, believe it or not, I really do. But honestly, I CANNOT recommend that anyone purchase this set. The poor design will simply frustrate the average person & limit the movements that they can execute when using the dumbbell. It's a very unwieldy set & that's sad because as crazy as it sounds, I still like this set. What I'll probably end up doing is using it for the barbell, then using my metal dumbbell handle to do dumbbell work. Which kinda defeats the purpose of buying this set. It also would've been nice had they skipped the plastic & made the connecting pieces. That would give this set a sturdier & safer feel. GREAT idea...POORLY executed!!
