  • Review and helpful hints
The listing says did not fit my vehicle. I suspected this info was WRONG and it was. I called Powermaster to ensure I ordered the right model (1998 Chevy Tahoe). The tech ensured me this was the correct model for my vehicle. He also ensured that I didn't need an adapter plug (hint if your "Chevy" plug is square instead of oval you need the adapter). This thing is big. Not gonna lie I struggled getting this monster to sit down in the cradle where it belongs and it literally presses up against the AC line hose. With my mighty rubber mallet and strong words, the alternator finally dropped down enough to get the bolts in. This model is rated for 140 amps at idle up to 220 while cruising. So here's the helpful hints (BEFORE YOU START). 1.) You NEED (read that again) to upgrade the power wire to 4AWG. The power post is 3/8". 2.) If your vehicle doesn't currently have a separate ground wire you don't need to add one. If you do have a separate ground then cut the alternator power wire off the power harness and use that as your ground to save money (you just need one copper lead so take the alternator and wire with you to the auto store and have them put the correct sized one on the cable for you if you don't have the tools). 3.) Measure your existing pulley. Many reports of people saying they needed a longer belt. For my truck I did not. Honesty if the pulley is a different size I highly recommend just doing this job in the auto stores parking lot. No point of potentially running back and forth a few times to get the correct belt. Lastly, be kind to the next owner of the vehicle and make notes on your vehicle of maintenance items you'd changed out from stock that require a different part number and put it in the glove box. ... show more

  • Cost twice as much but is twice as good
Liking this alternator so far. I am a mechanic and I can really tell the quality of workmanship and the quality of metals used in this alternator. I installed it on my 02 Yukon coupled with a new AC Delco Gold AGM battery group 78. Before I put this setup on my car was having dead batteries after the car would sit for a few days. My yukon has a crap load of electronics on it from the factory like air shocks and rear AC so it needs a large alternator and good battery and now I can really tell that the alternator is charging the living crap out of my new AGM group 78 and spinning the motor over very fast, even during this snow and ice storm at 6 degrees F out after sitting 48 hours. I am definitely willing to pay the money for USA made parts and appreciate the workmanship. No loss in milage I can tell. I also put a new water pump, belts, tensioner and idler at the same time. But the alternator itself is insanely easy to do on the 02 era 5.3. Definitely save some money and do yourself with a part three times as good as what your shop puts on. ... show more

  • Nothing but trouble since installing this alternator
This alternator caused my truck to constantly have the code P1635 showing an error with the ECM readings. I replaced everything I could think of and it never went away (Until I replaced this unit with another brand). It also would say the battery was not charging upon starting the truck but would quickly stop showing the error and go to normal. Finally the entire unit died while on a road trip, dropping voltage at a slow but constant rate until the entire vehicle died at night. Had it towed, swapped a new alternator in the parking lot of a hotel and everything was back to normal before I regrettably installed this alternator. Do not recommend this product, nothing but problems. ... show more

  • Amazing alternator
Really loving this alternator it has been able to supply enough power that my E-fan conversion on my 99 silverado is not dropping the voltage down at idle with the ac running on high. Really happy with the quality and fit exactly the same as the stock alternator. I would recommend if you switch from a stock alternator to this that you get better power and ground wires to rewire everything for the best efficiency plus you will need to add an extra ground on this set up. ... show more

  • Not exactly a drop-in replacement.
Hi fellow Amazonians, I have a 2003, Chevy 2500HD Duramax 4x4 and purchased this Hi-Amp alternator as a direct replacement for the stock alternator which was going bad. So I pulled out the stock one and placed them side-to-side to make sure they were identical. They're not. Firstly, the Powermaster appears slightly larger than the stock unit. The electrical stud connector on the back is a 1/4" in diameter. The Powermaster's stud is 5/16" diameter so I had to enlarge the terminal connector to 5/16" diameter to fit. But I suspect the larger sizes was because of the higher capacity? I measured the mounting bolt-hole distance (center-to-center) and thankfully, it was identical. But the bolt hole "width" was about 1/32" longer than stock. You would think a 32nd of an inch is no big deal but it made for a super-tight fit. I ended up having to slightly chamfer the bottom of the bolt holes just to start it in place. Then it was a series (lots) of love taps with a wooden wedge and hammer to line up the outboard hole. But once I got the outboard hole to line up, the inboard hole would simply pivot into place (although I still had to tap this side into final position. So a simple 1-hour replacement job turned into a 3-hour project. But it works like a champ and my headlights are bright white now minus that slight yellow tint. Bottom line is it fit but only after some slight adjustments. It's not exactly a drop-in replacement and this is why I couldn't give it 5 stars. ... show more

  • Just what I needed
Been using stock 145 in the truck with a mild system (800 w) Most of the time the voltage stayed at 13.2 to 13.6. With this alternator I'm at 14.6.
