  • Great product for price and fun to use
Color: Blue Style: Camera Only
The reasons I purchased this camera were mainly for 1) an affordable alternative to the goPro 2) to take videos of mountain biking and other moderate outdoor activities we do and 3)for vacations and adventures where other, more substantial cameras really aren't useful. An example of this would be a water park. I did a fair amount of research and found some, perhaps, better options and some more expensive options and decided this was the best fit for my life. Obviously, the GoPro is superior in this category. It is also three times the price. I am not that hardcore into any sporting activity that I could justify that kind of money, so I decided to try this. I got the Polaroid Cube in the mail today, so this review is my opinion based on 3-4 hours of playing with it and using it in various settings. I plan on updating my review in a few weeks or months when I have had more time to work with it. These are the things I noticed right off the bat from the videos and photos I took: THE GOOD * I would compare it's quality to that of a nicer cell phone (think Galaxy s5 or an iphone 5 or higher). It is good, and in some cases VERY good. It also has the possibility of being bad (and in some cases very bad). Sunny day, outside, the video and photo quality is fantastic. The colors are vibrant and it picks up on everything. In low light, you have a bit of graininess. If you are trying to take a photo of a fast moving target like a kid or a pet, it's likely going to come out blurry. This seemed to be the case in my initial photos. There is a small lag in the photo taking and this might have something to do with it. *The audio picks up pretty well. I could understand myself clearly and it even picked up whispering somewhat close by. * It is SMALL, very lightweight, and cute to boot. I feel if you didn't care about the esthetics of the product, you might be buying a different camera. Clearly it's design is cute and somewhat alluring. * The magnet stuck to the car and we were able to get a video going 35-45 miles per hour. I was freaking out the whole time, but it really didn't budge. The indicators and buttons are fool proof. It is so easy to use and understand that pretty much anyone could use it. If you want a tiny camera for those of you who don't fancy themselves tech savvy, this might be the camera for you. * It's price is great for this category! GoPro's really do monopolize this market and they are a good 200-300 dollars more. For some, this isn't feasible. *Turns itself off after a few minutes of inactivity so it conserves it's own battery life. Since this battery life is stated at 90 minutes, I'm grateful for this feature when I wouldn't normally think to turn my camera off. The NOT SO GOOD * Slow charge rate. For 90 minutes of battery it takes 3-4 hours to charge. Not horrible, but also not great. * The plate on the back you need to twist off with a coin to access the charging port and SD card slot. I couldn't get this off with my finger which means you need a coin to access it. If you don't have a coin then good luck looking around the house till you find that object that will fit perfectly. * For some, the lack of viewfinder or screen will be a bit frustrating. I didn't mind it, but I also did aim a bit too high in some videos and need to learn to point it downward a bit more. * The fish eye in an indoor setting was MUCH more noticeable than outside. Going through doorways and in and out of rooms the house looked very funny. Some getting used to is in order. I didn't really notice this at all outside so it's the close quarters making this much more obvious. This camera will be GREAT for water parks, days at the beach, fun events with friends and family where you'd love to get some video, but don't want to go through the hassle of carrying around a large and heavy device. I purchased the lanyard along with this and I love the idea that I can just wear it around my neck until I want to use it. So lightweight and functional in that way. Important to note, the camera is water resistant BUT NOT WATERPROOF. You need to purchase the additional waterproof housing in order to swim, snorkel, and do any other water activity with it. You can buy the waterproof housing for 25 on amazon. All in all, currently happy with my purchase and cannot wait to use it more in the days to come! ... show more

  • Bad video, bad battery life, should cost $50
Color: Red Style: Camera Only
I write this having used the cube pretty intensively as an action camera over the past 2 weeks. This should not be advertised as an action camera, as that is the thing it is absolutely WORST at recording. Even very slow pans turn the video stream into unvieawable, absolute mush because of the extremely low bitrate of the video. If you are holding it steady on a non-moving object in bright light, it is decent. Anything other than that, and it's pretty rancid: low light, panning, quickly moving -- all lousy in both 720 and 1080. And don't be fooled by the 1080. It's no better than the 720, and only cuts the already crummy battery life to even worse. If the thing were $60, maybe this would be an OK compromise, but at $100, it underperforms a lot of much cheaper cameras you can find here on amazon. The camera's behavior is unpredictable. One day, it simply didn't shoot clips. Reformatting the card fixed that, but on my camera, it constantly shoots clips with the sound cutting off about 1 second before the video at the end of the clip. (Verified via many different clip players.) Polaroid customer service wants to blame the high-quality Sandisk 32 gig class 10 micro SD I bought as "recommended" by Amazon with the thing. They say I should try a "different" brand, without specifying which. This is a BS customer service copout. I checked with Polaroid BEFORE buying this to see if they had any recommendations for memory, and they had NONE aside from "class 10." Battery life is rotten, underperforming even low expectations. On 720 mode, which is supposed to yield the longest battery life, I have shot with it until dead many times, and when I total the clips together, I get about 50 minutes as opposed to the 90 minutes promised. The best I have ever gotten was 82 minutes, but that happened only one time, and the thing cut off my last (most important) clip. It cut this off while warning me that the battery was at 10%. That's right, the battery warning has the effect of cutting off your clips. Here's why: Since it has no feedback mechanism other than beeping at you, when it wants to issue a low battery warning, which it does at 10%, it needs to turn off the video at that point or it would register its own beeps. That's annoying enough, but here's what's worse. At 10% battery life, it's essentially the same as a dead battery. Every time you try to record another clip at low battery life, it cuts it off AGAIN with the warning beep. So, essentially, it makes its already lousy battery life even worse by not giving you the final 5-8 minutes. Again, this might not seem like a big deal, but with a realistic battery life of 50 minutes in use, not being able to get the final 5-8 minutes is a major problem. The best thing going for it is the design. With its small size and the little magnet, you can hack together a mount really easily. Glue a stainless steel washer to some Velcro, carry around a strap, and you've got a $2 universal mount. That's handy, and far friendlier than any of the fiddly mounts you get with GoPro or the clones. The magnet is strong enough to stand up to some pretty major thumping, though it will eventually cut loose if you wipe out, unlike a harder mount. But just try doing something like running with a GoPro on your head, and you'll see it's impossible with the weight and tightness of the headband. This can only be recommended as an overpriced, underperforming casual video camera. It won't shoot action, the battery won't last, and good luck figuring out what the problems are when it starts to misbehave. Polaroid is absolving itself of any fault by blaming memory cards, which proves it has no interest in making things right. ... show more
