  • A console worthy of the next generation with a few minor quibbles.
Received my PS4 Destiny bundle yesterday, and after 24 hours with it, some quick observations: The console: This thing is just beautiful, especially in glacier white. Set up was fast and easy. It does wobble a little. This is a common issue from day one. Something that I thought they would have sorted by now, but it's a tiny thing. It's clearly fast and powerful, and the settings allow for a great deal of user customization. The user interface though is a bit of a mess, with no options to re-order your games and apps. Everything is just sort of all thrown on the same screen. The PS3 at least separated games from apps and music, etc. The controller: a huge improvement over the Dual Shock 3. Huge. Well constructed, responsive, and a good solid feel to the analog sticks and buttons. For me though, the Xbox One controller still takes the win for ergonomics and comfort. I played the Destiny beta on the Xbox One, and after three to four hours of straight gaming, no discomfort whatsoever. Playing Destiny on the PS4 however, my hands started to feel cramped within an hour. By the end of hour three, my thumbs were so sore, I had to stop playing. I think this is mostly due to Sony's insistence to keep the same classic Playstation controller configuration with both thumb sticks centrally located on the controller, while the hand grips fan outwards slightly, so you are required to stretch both thumbs a bit further than is ultimately comfortable. A friend I was playing with for several hours last night also noted similar discomfort after just a short time that became noticeably worse for him as well as the game went on. Of course, it may have something to do with the type of game we were playing - a first person shooter is likely to have more of a cramping affect than a puzzler or turn based RPG, based on the frenetic game play alone. *UPDATE - After a few days using the controller pretty hard with long sessions in Destiny, I will say that my discomfort has decreased a bit. Seems that extended use has served to "train" my hands for this controller. I still experience discomfort, but not as quickly, nor as severe as day one. The battery life on the controller is abysmal. About three hours of battery life in one game session, as opposed to about a week of battery life from the Xbox controller with average to heavy use. The controller does charge rather quickly though, going from depleted to a full charge in just about an hour. The terrible battery life is going to make owning a second controller all the more imperative in order to have a fully charged back-up ready to go during long gaming sessions. I suppose that is Sony's ultimate end game. Nothing like pushing those accessory sales. *UPDATE - At day three, battery life is still ranging between 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours for me. The light on the front of the controller, while intended to make it more immersive, ultimately becomes more of a distraction than anything else. Even turned down to the "dim" setting, it reflects back at me from my glossy TV screen, and I find myself looking down at the controller mid game-play when the light flashes or changes color, taking my eyes off the screen. An option to turn it off entirely would be welcome. The speaker in the controller however IS a really nice touch that succeeds where the light fails in making the gaming experience more immersive. Turn on a flashlight in The Last of Us, for instance, and you hear the click emanate from your hand. Find an in-game audio log, and hear it played from the controller. Great stuff. Of course, both of these features contribute to battery drain. The headset: The "headset" that comes with the system is a joke. A cheap, mono earbud that makes me feel like I'm listening to a transistor radio in the '70s, audio quality and all. It's also terribly uncomfortable. But hey, there's this $100 stereo headset that is the answer to all your prayers. I understand Sony is looking to sell accessories, but for a premium "next gen" console, that carries a significant price tag, I'd hope for better right out of the box. The PS4 does have Bluetooth, but as of yet there is no built in support for Bluetooth headsets. I look forward to the update that enables it. The Value: Something that Sony has always had going for it is the value of the PS Plus membership. There is no denying it. Free games every month. And good games, not four year old clunkers that Microsoft likes to give away with their Gold membership. The Playstation store is still a bit of a mess, however. I was hoping for a complete overhaul of the interface into something more organized, and while a few strides were made in that department, it's still all a bit convoluted and complicated at times. The Social features: The social features of the PS4 are rich and well delivered, and the sharing feature is particularly well done. Great care was taken in making all social tasks intuitive and easy. Great interactivity between friends, sharing to social networks, live streaming and clip editing. It's all flawless. So, yeah, some complaints there to be sure, but don't let that fool you. All of these gripes are very minor when compared to the overall quality and power of the system, combined with the social features, great exclusive games, and the amazing value of the PS Plus membership. What I'm trying to say, is that despite a few shortcomings, the PS4 is still a fantastic console, and I am digging the heck out of it. The Game: I'm generally not one to go in for first person shooters on consoles, as I prefer them on the PC mostly for the superior control available with mouse and keyboard. Destiny however, changed my mind about that. The controls are responsive and well balanced, and even though I still feel quite awkward with a controller in hand, and thus am getting my butt handed to me in online matches, it has eased my discomfort with FPS console gaming. The co-op story mode is great fun, and this is where the game truly shines for me. I'm much more of a fan of playing with my friends rather than against them, and really enjoy this aspect. The graphics are stunning, the armor and weapons upgrades are a good time, and the gameplay in general is fun without being stressful, which can often be the case in online FPS's. I also picked up The Last of Us: Remastered, which I had previously played on the PS3. Enough has been written about this game elsewhere so I won't go into any detail, except to say that the additional power of the PS4 has taken an already beautiful game and made it even better. All in all, I am truly impressed with the PS4. Will it replace my Xbox One? No. But it will co-exist in beautiful harmony with it. Side note: For people who are having trouble using the included code for a free 30 day subscription to PS Plus - I ran into the same problem. Upon reading the fine print, it seems the code is only valid for new PS Plus members only. So, if like me , you had a membership before, say for your PS3, the code will not be valid. Keep this in mind when purchasing, as you may have to incur additional costs to get online after receiving your order. Personally, I think that's a bit unfriendly to your customer base to exclude people who have paid for the service in the past, and who likely purchased games and DLC through the service as well. All players should be rewarded for purchasing this console bundle, not just new ones. Like Microsoft's Gold, which allows you to add all free trials to your existing benefits to extend them, Sony's promo codes should simply add to whatever existing membership benefits you have remaining on your account. If your account is not currently active, then any promo code should be used to re-activate it. It's basic stuff, really. ... show more

  • PS3/PC gamer review of this bundle. /all Worth
A little back story: I purchased a PS3 back in 2011, and it still works as perfectly as the day it was opened. My PS3 got me through college, and will soon be given to my little brother to get him through college. So I'm not a stranger to Playstation. When I graduated I moved in with three housemates who are all PC gamers. I spent ~$3,000 building a desktop and it. is. amazing. Made Skyrim on PS3 look like an N64 game. I was fairly reserved when buying the PS4 because I was so used to top-notch graphics and no loading screens. The PS4 graphics are just as mind-blowing. The rendering of shadows, lighting and water in Destiny are so incredible, really, hats off to those responsible for it. PS4 Review: Graphics are mindblowingly good Interface seems much easier to use than the PS3 was Sleek design. Slightly annoyed at how small the power button is, and I think it might be touch instead of an actual button. PS4 Controller: Nice design, personally I actually liked the PS3 controllers better though. Some people had been complaining about the joysticks, but I'm at ~40 hours of gameplay and they're still perfect. Doesn't seem to hold a charge nearly as long as the PS3 controllers, but I have my PS4 set up on my computer desk ~3feet from me so I just keep it plugged in. I don't have a solid number for you, but if I had to guess I'd say it would only last about 5 or so hours. The "headset" they give you is an uncomfortable earpiece with a mic attached, like you used to see come with phones. I'm going to try to get my work bluetooth to connect because that's kinda irritating and the earbud hurts and wont stay in my ear. Destiny Review: Graphics: 10/10, amazing Gameplay: 10/10, amazing Storyline: lolwut The story is never clear, and they never really explain. They get around this by characters saying things such as "I don't have time to explain" or "you know the legend yes?" and Dinklebot will reply "of course" before you can even say "uhh no? Care to tell me what's happening?" They also tell you to go online to read cards you unlock which explain the story. Leveling up to 20 was fun and pretty quick, I really enjoyed the missions even if I didn't really know why I was doing stuff. Strike missions require PSPlus but are definitely worth it, they require 3 people to play and give a lot of experience and are pretty tough. Crucible (multiplayer pvp) is Halo-like, except that you keep all your guns, armor and moves from singleplayer which is fun and adds a lot of diversity. It also means the higher level people dominate, but if you're good you can hang, and you get good rewards. Personally I avoided it until I was level 20 and now I'm doing okay. Patrol: a mode where you basically have free reign to wander the different locations (Russia, Moon, Venus, Mars), taking mini missions as you see fit and killing enemies for experience. This is wonderful for leveling up and for taking in the sights! Leveling past 20 is weird, because it requires leveling up your armor instead of XP bar. I won't bother getting into details on that though, basically you just need to play a LOT of matches and get better armor to advance. I'm currently level 23 and still having fun. Issues: Story line was over pretty quickly, and I didn't really know what was happening. For a company capable of such a great story as the Halo series, this was disappointing. Getting new weapons and armor - this one is the biggest issue people seem to have. You get something called an "engram" which you take to someone to decode. It has a % chance of giving you an item which is common, uncommon, rare, or legendary. This is how you get almost all of your items and weapons, which means it's entirely up to chance. People have played a strike mission, spent a good half hour killing a difficult boss and gotten a Legendary Engram, only to have it pop out a Rare item which is useless to them at that point in the game. Even the Legendary Engrams only have an okay-ish chance of giving you a legendary item. Leveling in this manner is a real pain. For example, I've spent longer going from 20 to 23 than I did going from 1 to 20. Overall, from a long-time PS3 fan converted to a PC gamer, this bundle was completely worth it. I am pretty sure I spent ~24 hours a week playing League of Legends on average before purchasing this bundle. Since then, I haven't signed onto League once, I've been too eager to play Destiny with some of my college friends. As a side note - Some may ask why I didn't just get Destiny on PS3. My college roommates, whom I never get to see, both have a PS4 and played Destiny on it. I wanted to join them, so I basically spent an additional $400 just to get the proper system to play with them. Still worth it. ... show more
