  • Good, Just Needs a Little Time for Good Smoke Flavor to Shine
Update (2/10)/2017) I have perfected my usage of these pellets with chicken and WOW 5stars! So double up the smoke volume on the smoke for chicken (A-maze-N Pellet Smoker lit from both sides). Do so for the 3-4 hour smoke and prepare to be amazed! I believe the same would work for ribs. This pellet blend is starting to blow me away as I learn how to best use it. So far a minimum of 4 hours of smoke or doubling the smoke output seems to be how to make this wonderful pellet blend shine. The smoke is amazing once you get it on your food. Upgrading to 5 stars especially since I bought it for less than $21! Update (1/23/2017): I am really liking this blend more and more. I think the key is to get at least 4 hours of smoke on meat. Once you get this level of smoke it really starts to shine quite a bit more. If doing a 3 hour or less smoke and using the A-Maze-N Pellet Smoker you can light from both ends to double up on the smoke. This may help and I plan to do it on any smokes 3 hours or less while using this pellet blend. Once you get enough of this smoke on your meat I think it is definitely a 5 star flavor. You just have to learn the sweet spot with your setup, level of smoke production, and the amount of time needed to really get the enough of the great flavor going! ---------------------- I bought the the 40lbs Competition Blend because of the price and the amount of pellets provided. That is a pretty good dollar to amount of pellets deal. As for flavor the smoke was mild on a 3 hour smoke I did on chicken leg quarters. I used the A-Maze-N Pellet Smoker which worked well with the pellets. The smoke flavor on the chicken was not very strong at all but had what I felt was some complexity. I really noticed this when I deboned the last 4 chicken quarters and put them in foil and then in the fridge for left overs. Later that day I ate some of the chicken and the flavor had really shined showing off the complexity of smoke flavor even though it was still mild in smokiness. This delayed flavor surprise was makes this a 4 star review rather than a 2 star review. The Competition Blend may not have been what I expected (all purpose) but I think it has a very specific usage where it can shine. Pros: -Burns well -Lots of pellets for an inexpensive price -Leaves little ash and had no partially or unburnt bellets -Flavor seems to get more complex over time in chicken (haven't tried other meat with it yet) Cons: -Mild flavor -Not what I would imagine a "competition" blend would be. It seems to be good for more delicate meats and pallets rather than a versatile competition smoke used for prominent meats (pork butts, brisket, etc.) or for a variety of meats Suggested Usage: I plan to do the following with the 40 pounds I have and suggest you consider the pellets for the same and nothing more: -Smoking Chicken that will be pulled or deboned -Smoking other poultry or delicate meat (I'm thinking lamb might be good and salmon as well) -Smoking Homemade Franks/Hot Dogs -Smoking Homemade Bologna or other lightly smoked sandwich meats -Blending with a 100% pellet like Mesquite (Mesquite is strong so this could be used to blend with mesquite like 50/50 or 70% Mesquite/ 30% Competition Blend) -Using for A-Maze-N Pellet Smoker startup: AMNPS instructions state to let pellets burn with flame for 10 minutes before blowing out and generating smoke. I plan to sacrifice the competition blend for the first 10 minutes of my AMNPS startup since I have so much Competition Blend for such a good price. It can be used as a bit of startup fodder :) I hope you guys find this helpful :) ... show more

  • Works flawlessly and I like the flavor it imparts
As far as the taste it imparts that is good. It burns well and I have had no problems using it. My one ding is because it is pretty expensive. I can buy pellets for half the price and I cannot believe that they would be so inferior that the higher cost would be justified. For day to day cooking I can accept that maybe this imparts a better flavor but not sure it would be so superior that it would justify spending twice as much. Edit Sept 1 - I am not sure why but the first few times with these pellets in the bin everything worked fine. After that I can only use them if I keep the temp up at 350 or above. I adjusted the feed but if I try to turn it down to even 250 and do not pay attention the flame goes out. Granted the pellets have been in a plastic bucket for a while so they may be prone to absorbing moisture. I have gone through two other bags of pellets and never had a single flame out but now there is a 100% chance that it will burn out if I set the temp to 250 and I guess 200 would be just as certain. The pellets impart a pretty mild flavor to what I cook which is a matter of taste but I prefer a stronger flavor. Still far better than a propane grill even when I pour in chips to get some real wood smoke going. So going forward I will be cooking things that do not require low and slow cooking until these are used up. If I move to the other brand pellet and have the same issue I will come back and do another edit. I cannot say that my problem is absolutely the fault of these pellets. I live in a hot and humid area and have only had my pellet grill for a while and have not cooked on it a great number of times so it might be causing the issue as well. ... show more

Bitt Boss brand is the only pellet I will use in our pellet grill. This flavor is amazing - but they all are.
