My cleft palate baby is introduced to medela special need bottle first, and she has a hard time getting the milk going and often it takes us an hour and lots of squeezing to get 1oz into her. She fell asleep half way into the feeding and didn't seem to have constant sucking motion. She was very underweight at birth (IUGR, at 0.1 percentile), and the feeding issue makes it really hard to catch up. We changed into the pigeon bottle two weeks ago, and it was a total win. I don't know if it's because her cleft is in the back of the palate near her throat. It took us one or two days to get used to the fast flow. She is now feeding like a champ with occasional setbacks that she just wouldn't latch on. Overall, she is actually "sucking" with this bottle and gaining weight like she's supposed to. We love the how easy it is to assemble the bottle and it comes with a cap. We certainly use the narrow nipple to begin with, and potentially can change to the regular size one. One thing we aren't as excited about is that I don't think we can directly put the bottle in the bottle warmer due to the thin plastic material.

Great choice for babies with soft cleft

We also tried the haberman and Dr. Browns specialty feeding system for a soft cleft, and this bottle was the best for our situation. If your child has a cleft of the soft palate I would highly recommend giving this bottle a try. Sure, the packaging is stupid with putting the instructions on the inside, but just twist it tight and pull it out. But people shouldn’t give it a bad review for that as this bottle and nipple system is genuinely great, and could be the best option for your child.

Great bottle, awful packaging

Picked up two of these, one for my house and one for my daughter so she had an extra. My grandson didn’t like the other bottle that was recommended for his soft cleft palate, so having a few extras of these will be helpful. However, the packaging is insane. Who puts the instruction manual INSIDE the bottle? It took nearly ten minutes for me to pry pieces of it out before I gave up and filled it with water to make the book start to fall apart so I could get the rest out. Good thing we already knew how to use it! It’s wrapped in plastic, so why not wrap the book around the bottle? Parents don’t need yet another hoop to jump through!

Great bottle, VERY expensive and horrible packaging

This bottle does its job in helping babies with suctino power or cleft palate get their daily bottles. However, the packaging is really bad. It is very hard to remove the instructions from inside. Also, the little valve to prevent the liguid from falling back falls easily. Overall, it does its job but I find it EXTREMELY expensive given the flaws and the purpose.
