I’ve owned a few of these now and every cat I’ve ever presented it to has gone bonkers over it. My last cat went through two. She was a destructive little monkey, but actually a pretty big cat. She could actually grab the feather in her mouth and pick the whole unit up in her mouth and carry it or flick her neck and throw it. She was tough on these, but she really liked beating them up. The cat I have now enjoys sitting and staring at it and occasionally swatting at it. She lets me know she wants to play with it by going and sitting next to it and looking from me to it until I go turn it on. They’re pretty sturdy unless your cat throws them, even then, the case, etc holds up fine. It’s the feathers that take a beating. It comes with one extra feather in the box, but I’d recommend getting the package of spares, too. The batteries last a really long time, even with regular play. It’s a little noisy, but the cats seem to get used to that quickly. It’s a really great toy.

Really a great toy for a bored cat. Mine absolutely loved it until he wore it out. The feathers that is. The replacement feathers are very difficult to change. I never managed to get the new ones put in. I just bought a different toy.

My rescue cat is not used to toys and seems very picky about what toys interest him and which ones KEEP him interested. This thing is awesome it's pretty quiet and it keeps him engaged. It pokes out a colorful feather and rope really fast with a random pattern at intervaled speeds. It's well made it looks cool, easy to change modes. As entertaining it is for the cat it's just as entertaining watching y our cat try and figure this thing out.

The media could not be loaded. I have a hyperactive cat who is super demanding, so I'm always on the lookout for something that will provide him with some automated play, both to keep him from driving me nuts, and for when I'm not at home. This toy has a great mechanic of teasing the cat with a feather that pops in and out of several different holes, "whack-a-mole" style. My cat actually really likes this and, depending on his mood, he'll either ignore it completely, or get really engaged with it. I have several suggested improvements that would make this a blockbuster hit in my house, and I imagine for others too. I'm frustrated that no one has had the insight to make these simple changes to any toys in order to provide what cat owners need: - Make it something that can stimulate the cat when the owner is away. If this could activate on a timer every hour, or two hours, or at random, it would entertain my cat all day! If there was a wifi option so it could be activated remotely, you could charge 5 times as much and I bet people would buy it. - I even think that if there was a simple "On" switch that the cat could manipulate, like a long lever coming out the top, or an easy to press button, I think my cat would turn this on by himself! That would be a game-changer! - Even a simple one-button remote control that I could use to activate the machine from across the room so I don't have to stop my work to distract my cat would be a welcome improvement. - Provide an optional power cord. This has not been a battery hog so far, but a power supply would be great. Overall, I think this is one of the more engaging cat toys I've tried. The other one we've been happy with is a laser toy that shoots a laser in an enticing pattern. That toy DOES come on periodically and has a power cord, so it's another favorite. But it is less tactile, so both of these have their pros and cons. To the manufacturer, thanks for this fun toy, and keep up the good work. A deluxe version of this toy with the features suggested would be a huge hit with me and my cats!

I originally gave a 1 star review because there was no spare feather as advertised. Petmate customer service responded to my complaint almost immediately and has shipped me my spare. The popup toy works as advertised. My cat was very interested and struck at the feather, attacking it like all the other cats in the demonstration video. However, my cat is very smart. A while back, we got her a popup toy with mice popping out from a block of "cheese". That was interesting for less than a week. She figured out the sequence of the mice popping out and became bored. I gave this toy to Goodwill. For this Ambush toy, instead of jumping all around to capture the feather from multiple holes, she just stayed in one place and waited for the feather to pop out from one or two holes, which they eventually did. Whether this was intelligence or laziness, I can't say. Anyway, I like this Ambush toy and will keep it around.

The metrics to rate (sturdiness, durability) don't apply well to this product. It is a feather tipped attachment that the cat is going to destroy. So, I rate it on how it is to install and whether it accomplishes the task. For installation, I give 4 stars. The design of the toy and the flimsiness of the feather make it difficult to install (you are trying to connect 2 floppy things.. and you can't make them un-floppy). However, with practice, you'll get better at it. For accomplishing the task, I rate this product a 5.

The media could not be loaded. My cat loves this! I love that I can turn it on and it keeps her attention for the span of its run. I wish there was a way to virtually turn it on for her while I’m work, unfortunately a human has to turn it on to get it started. Within a week she had ripped the feathers off the end, so I’m glad it came with an extra head of feathers. I wish it had more than 2 though. Is there anywhere I can buy additional replacement feather heads?
