  • Works as it should.
I like how it is easy to adjust the length. It is still pretty darn sturdy when fully extended.

  • It's a paddle
Been waiting awhile for Perception to release the paddle for the Outlaw fishing kayak. Converts from double blade paddle to stand-up paddle for stand-up fishing from the Outlaw.

  • It's great
I love it. Prefect for my kayak. Great length, converts to a stand up paddle. It's great.

  • A nice, long, paddle that's always ready to go
Purchased this on sale from another retailer. I wanted a paddle that was longer, and also because Perception makes good equipment, I looked at their products preferentially. In nearly every respect, this paddle feels like a better tool than other paddles including another by Perception (the Hi Life paddle). Here are features that I like: Infinite feather because of the adjustment collar. I experimented extensively over a couple of outings and determined I like a +30° feather. Much more than that and I slap the water, and less, I end up needlessly twisting my wrists. Very light weight. This paddle is really light, perhaps not in the high-end carbon fiber range, but it is noticeably lighter than the other fine Perception paddle, and more in the range of the super-cheap toy paddles that came with an inexpensive inflatable. Yet... it's certainly no toy. Because of its low weight, each stroke uses less energy and ultimately you can go further on your trip. Slices neatly into the water. I'm impressed how the blade dives into the water with very little splash or fanfare. This translates to less wasted energy and a more-efficient stroke. Power and resistance to flex. Obviously this is a bit of a challenge to quantify, but blade size, angle, and shape yield effective motion compared to a 'simple' squared-off paddle. One paddle with squared-off blades feels like every stroke is a bit of a fight to keep the paddle steady through the pull. The Outlaw paddle tube does not bend, so far as I have felt in use, and the blades similarly do not flex even when digging hard against current or a breeze. Length is adjustable. Within its limits, the tube length can be varied infinitely (versus stepped or pinned), and its max length was a selling point for me, having quickly tired of lunging side-to-side to make use of shorter paddles. However, see the cons about this. Disassembly is trivially easy, and the supplied T-handle stub lets me easily convert to SUP mode, though I'm finding that the clumsy-looking two-blade SUP approach with this paddle both works and is in some ways preferable to the very slow-feeling single-blade approach. I use the T-handle stub about half the time I want to SUP in my hybrid. And now, a few cons that didn't accumulate enough woe to dock a star: Paint issue: after several hours using this paddle, my lead hand has picked up quite a bit of the paint / electroplating. At some point, I'll have worn a bare spot on the tube. The other Perception paddle does not have this problem. Hopefully Perception will have remedied this by the time an Outlaw 2 or such becomes available. T-handle stub does NOT float. This is a dumb oversight by Perception, given how simple it is to bobble the thing (it's tiny) and in the drink it goes. I remedied this by stuffing about 1.5" of 1" backer rod deep into the T-handle tube, and now it floats quite well. If you get this paddle and want to convert on the go into SUP mode, before your outing make sure you pack it full of backer rod (think very narrow pool noodle) and then it'll float. Storage and transport. It's easy to disassemble and put the two paddle sections in a vehicle, and also easy to hang them on a two-pronged vinyl hook to store for the next trip. Without disassembly, the only way the paddle would fit on an 8-ft wall is by very careful hook positioning or horizontal storage options. And, the neg that would almost dock a star: the paddle-length clamp collar. Oh how I wish it were different, like a screw-together design or something. As supplied, the clamp was too loose and I ended up cutting an outing short because I could not keep the paddle from auto-adjusting to +50° and I couldn't really paddle well at all. I didn't bring a compact philips screwdriver to adjust on-the-fly, and wished I had. I tightened it more after that trip, and on a subsequent lake crossing, it continued to loosen. Aggravated, I tightened it further later and it still loosened a little on what was the third use. I gave it another half-revolution and now it seems fairly sturdy. I'm contemplating an approach involving strategically drilling a hole at the +30° mark where that meets the 16cm length increase scale, then using a spring pin to keep it at that adjustment, which is how I'd want to use this paddle going forward. It's dumb that I'd need to be plotting that type of fix since the point of adjustable paddles is to not lock you into these configurations, but that's how it seems to go with adjustable paddles. The friction collar also is not especially comfortable to encounter with one's hand, but I know it has to be there and Perception specified a rounded edge profile so it doesn't hurt to occasionally contact it. Floatation: the paddle comes pre-stuffed with foam and Perception states that all of their paddles float. That is, all but the T-handle extension. Remember to get some backer rod if you intend to use the T-handle conversion. Summary: I'd get this paddle again if I lost it or it cratered due to abuse. ... show more

  • Loose small paddle and its only good as stand up paddle
I unfortunately dropped the small paddle into the lake when changing it to standup paddle mode. Now that I have lost the small paddle I had to purchase a new one due to no customer support.

  • Poor paddle design for the money.
I bought this and returned it. One paddle end is removable and can be replaced with a T-handle for paddle boarding. The fit on the paddle end isn't very tight leading a cheap feel. Also, the T-handle is a small piece, black, that looks like it'll inevitably be lost or drop to the bottom of the body of water that you're on. Good things, the shaft is nice and the mode of adjustment is very nice. ... show more
