I have had these for about a year now and all 4 have broken at the exact same spot. The knurled finger grip is metal, but it has a plastic sheath under it that mates it with the upper barrel(that is the colored bit, the yellow, blue, etc). That plastic bit is the weakest link. I feel a bit mislead by the product description saying metal and not "metal and plastic" for the material. Overall it is a nice writing instrument, but I am annoyed the case was not all metal.     • Up your woodshop game, ditch the carpenter's pencils
I'm using these in my woodshop and keep a .9 and .5 in my apron. The .5 fits into precision marking gauge holes while the .9 is durable enough for rough marking. My only complaint is that the lead tends to advance anytime the tip is activated...Perhaps if I didn't ham-fist it down I could get the tip exposed without going too far and also advancing the lead. I'll sometimes have lead breakage after a few uses when the lead advances enough to be exposed even with the tip retracted.     • Worth every penny
I have purchased this set a few times for the following reasons: people steal them, I lose them, I gift them, and I like having a few sets to keep at home and to keep at work. I have an addiction to writing instruments so you’ll be surprised to see just about every kind there is in my collection. I have purchase the 50 bucks a piece mechanical pencils, all the way to cheap 99¢ pencils. Nothing beats the Pentel Graphgear 1000. I use them mostly for drawing and shading very fine detailed graphite drawings. The weight and balance of the instrument is perfect. I like a slightly heavier pencil so that I can use its weight rather than manual pressure to make marks. I can draw for hours upon hours at a time, and the pencils work beautifully. I bought the 0.2 mm from Pentel, but I wish it was a Graphgear 1000. Still, it is a wonderful instrument and works incredibly well. If you see a bad review, I can’t imagine why. Take it from a professional artist who has tried just about everything under the sun. These are the best money can buy. ... show more

    • My go to pencil!
This is a high quality, high performance and functional mechanical pencil. It is absolutely worth the cost. It is versatile in that it can be used for drafting or free hand art/sketching. The real selling feature for this device is the retractable point does not damage your shirt pocket and it is a good pocket pen if you are in field work on a construction site, factory or other areas outside where a mechanical pencil is needed.
