I have owned a Vault case, and this exceeded my expectations by a longshot! I was on the fence about this due to the price but once I got my hands on it, the superior quality became abundantly clear. The case is tough, and I mean rigid, sturdy as an oak tree. The plastic doesn't flex when clamped shut. The 3 carry handles lock into open position with a hardy click, and lock back into folded position with the same tactile click, they have comfort grip too. The foam far exceeded my expectations, being far more dense than the foam included in their vault series cases, however it was easy to cut with my pocket scalpel shown in my photos. I recently traveled via airlines and they must have thrown this thing around like a boner at a porn convention, it took a hard beating but you'd never know looking inside. Nothing moved a millimeter. Overall I'm seriously impressed with this, and all it's features. For me this case is worth every penny to protect my investments. Also of note is replacement foam can also be purchased to reconfig, and once you register this with Pelican, you are covered for life. What else could you ask for? Buy it, you won't regret it.

Nowhere in the Pelican website or here on Amazon can one find the information that pertains to Airline travel. The USA Airlines all have the same limitation and that is 62 total linear inches. That is Height X Width X Deep of no more than 62 inches when added together. The Pelican 1700 is the ONLY PELICAN case that falls under the approved airline guidelines for both size and approved gun/rifle carry. It is 38.5" Height X 16.5" Wide X 6" Deep. That equals exactly 61 total linear inches. This measurement includes the handles folded and also the wheels, even though the wheels do not protrude past the case. Plus, the case, rifle and padlocks do not put the weight past the 50 pound limit with USA Airlines. The case has 4 metal infused locking rings on the outside. I travel a lot and carry my AR-15 inside. It fits perfectly and with 4 padlocks, I am well above all the government and airline requirements. The case comes with 3 separate thick foam pieces that are the exact size of the inside of the case. Pelican recommends the middle foam be cut to mirror the AR-15 or other rifle you are carrying. Just remove the middle foam and lay the foam down on a hard surface, trace out the rifle, cut the foam and the rifle fits snug and does not move during travel. Remember NEVER carry the rifle loaded or bullets inside the same case. Also the bolt action part of the rifle DOES NOT require a cable lock through it as long as you lock all 4 of the outside locking rings with padlocks. Yes, PADLOCKS and NOT CABLE LOCKS. The airlines do not like cable locks as they get caught in conveyor belts. Just 4 simple, but sturdy padlocks on the outside is all the locks you need. Ammo can be carried as well but you must put it in another case, suitcase or even an ammo can. All of these must ALSO be locked. Keep in mind that some states wont allow you to arrive there with a gun or ammo of any kind. Check with the state you are flying to so you can make sure, but you know the states I am referring to without even having to look them up.

I love my case. I didn't realize that it wasn't the easy pre-cut squares to remove, but I learned how to do it myself. This case seems very well made, but time will tell. I'll update if there are any issues over time.

Ok so I have an older Pelican 1700 case and I wanted a slightly larger case for a few of my upgraded pew Pew's. I initially ordered the Vault V730 (because it was cheaper) and when it came in, I was so excited that I went to load my PewPew and realized that the lid does NOT stay open by itself. My old 1700 has this feature and it's super helpful at the range or just taking the gun from your truck. Not having the lid flop backwards should be a standard for all gun cases but I guess it's not. Well I returned that and ordered the 1720 thinking that by paying the extra $100 or so that it would have that feature because my old 1700 had it as well. Well color my shocked when I found out that this case from Pelican (you know the premier gun case manufacturer that the military uses with all their testing and it being priced accordingly) also DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO KEEP THE LID OPEN!! Seriously!! That shocks me. After calling Pelican to ask them how in the world could they make a case without this feature, the customer service person was a dumb-founded as I was. And there is no option for the Vault nor the 1720 to make this happen. Only the IM series has this option (which is another $35 and something you have to install yourself). Is it really this hard Pelican for you to make a case where the lid stays open by itself when your previous model had this feature? Here's what's funny - I almost ordered the new Magpul cases because they look great, but they also do NOT have this feature and they aren't rated for waterproof. Soooo frustrating!!
