  • Best product I have used so far for redness for my rosacea and sensitive skin
Following a long overdue visit to a dermatologist, I have been on a recent skincare journey to take better care of my skin. Years of working outdoors with a fair redheaded complexion and only marginal use of sunscreen have taken their toll. I always applied sunscreen in the morning and generally have worn a hat while working outdoors, but would fail to re-apply over the course of the day as applying sunscreen over dirty sweaty skin is uncomfortable to say the least. My dermatologist recommended I start using a retinoid over the long term to reverse some of my skin damage, and recommended Differin gel. I had used a retinol for years (Serious Skincare's Age Defiance line), but last winter suffered serious skin barrier damage as my skin has become drier than it used to be now that I am in my early 50's. I didn't realize at the time my attempts to exfoliate all the peeling red aggravated skin were just exacerbating the issue and causing further damage to my skin barrier. After months of battling peeling angry skin, I finally quit using retinol and quit over exfoliating, allowing my skin barrier to finally heal. So when my derm recommended I start using a retinoid, I was hesitant as I knew if I wasn't careful I could end up with red peeling angry skin again. I researched how to ease into using a retinoid and have slowly been increasing the number of days of use over the last few months. I also dramatically simplified the rest of my skincare routine while going through this adjustment. Gone were any kind of harsh exfoliating or foaming cleansers, retinol serums, and layering of multiple products, as well as any products with fragrance. I have always been sensitive to fragrance but tended to ignore signs my skin was giving me of irritation as it wasn't too dramatic. I had been alternating manual and chemical exfoliating cleansers with Cetaphil daily cream cleanser for years, using the Cetaphil when my skin wasn't too grimy and the harsher cleansers for dirty/sweaty field days, to remove waterproof sunscreen, or when my skin was feeling rough. When I started using Differin I pared down to the Cetaphil only, or a gentle cleansing balm followed by Cetaphil to remove water resistant sunscreen. Following cleansing, I started using La Roche-Posay Toleraine Double Repair Face Moisturizer followed by a sensitive skin formulated mineral sunscreen in the day, and CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream at night. Super simple and all products recommended for sensitive rosacea prone skin, so you would think non-irritating right? Not so much. As my skin adjusted to the retinoid, it was so sensitive that even the Cetaphil cleanser and the day and nighttime moisturizers known to be so mild and formulated for sensitive skin would sting and cause my skin to be very red for a while after cleansing/moisturizing. I apply the retinoid over my nighttime moisturizer as a buffer, but after almost a month of every other day use (which had taken me about two months to build up to), I thought I was ready to bump it up to nightly. My skin disagreed and ended up getting very angry (red with severe peeling) around my nose and cheek area, which is also where my skin tends to be the reddest when aggravated. In this state, even water irritates my skin. While researching skin care routines for mature skin, I have seen reference to "hydrating toners", but didn't think much of them. I come from an era where "toner" when I was a teenager meant harsh stripping toners that were basically like swiping your face with alcohol and were always too harsh for my combo skin, even back then. But during my research, hydrating toners kept getting mentioned and this Paula's Choice calming toner kept popping up. I have only used one other product from PC which I like very much (Omega+ Complex Cleansing Balm), so decided to give it a try. I am SO glad I did. This toner has helped calm my redness in a way nothing else I have tried has. I tried Cetaphil Redness Relieving Night Moisturizer, alternating it with the Cerave night cream, expecting to see calmer skin in the morning after using and still seeing more redness than I would like. This calming toner from PC does what I thought a product claiming to reduce redness should do, and when using it I see a dramatic difference in the level of redness in my nose/cheek area. There is also no stinging whatsoever and it feels very soothing going on. When my skin is so irritated that even the Cetaphil cleanser stings a bit, the PC calming toner seems to neutralize the stinging. After taking about a week off from using the retinoid while my skin barrier healed, I recently started again with every other day application. I will likely try to get to daily application again, just maybe a bit more slowly this time. I think this calming toner will help that transition a bit and because it's so effective at calming my redness has become a permanent part of my new skincare routine. ... show more

  • Drink for your dry skin
I’ve been on the hunt for a toner that is: affordable, effective, and hydrating. I tried high and low end toners and this is by far the best. The cream skin toner by lanige is similar but not as hydrating. This bottle lasted me 5 months which is much more affordable than other high end brands that I’ve tried. I just dump a few drops into my hands and pat on the face before adding in my serums to my morning/night time routine. ... show more

  • One of my holy grail products
I’ve been using this product close to twenty years probably. I originally began using it as a toner/moisturizer, in my late teens/early twenties. I had sensitive, acne prone, combo/oily skin. It was one of the few products that didn’t break me out or make face look like it had been steamed over a deep fryer. Now in my late thirties, my skin is much less oily and less acne prone (although still get some pimples here and there). However, I’ve developed eczema… red, flakey, skin around my mouth/hairline. It’s so nasty looking, and one of the only things that helps is using this product and lightly exfoliating the dead flaky skin off. I use it just as a toner now, and use a la roche posay moisturizer afterwards. This routine keeps my skin looking semi-decent and keeps my eczema flairs to a minimum. ... show more

  • Texture
Im getting older and the texture of my skin here in my 40’s is very different from my 20’s and 30’s my nephew’s wife who went to school to be an aesthetician and knows enough about skin, advised me to try this and one other item from the line. My skin has been improving and my make up is sitting better on my skin again. It’s light weight and easy to apply, dries quickly and leaves no odd feeling on the skin after. I will keep using this. ... show more

  • Obsessed with the softness but not sure how much it works
I struggle with redness in my face, thinking it might be like rosacea, and this seems like it kinda works but not all the time. I’ve been using it for a month or so and now my redness only comes sometimes instead of just always being there… Not sure if it actually works but it feels soft on my skin

  • Helped heal some pretty messed up skin
I have very oily combination skin that is on the sensitive side, so I realized too late that I seriously messed up my skin with adapalene gel. Like my Cerave PM moisturizer stung like a bitch levels of bad. I did a bit of research into gentle toners to help heal my skin and finally settled on this Paula's Choice toner and my GOD. Not only did this not sting or irritate my skin, but my skin has probably not been this hydrated in months. My skin, which would have probably needed a solid month to fully recover, is now back to normal in like a week and a half after using this toner alongside additional care methods like the Cerave foaming cleanser and Cerave daily moisturizing lotion for normal to dry skin. While so far I wouldn't suggest it for acne alone, it really has improved and helped heal my skin. ... show more
