They came folded and in a plastic bag, I don't recall there being any odor when opening, but I did open them and air them out as a means to keep track of what had been purchased vs arrived. I bought these for my neighbors wedding and they worked perfectly for the arbor we had. They brought just enough color to help the bride's white dress pop for the pictures. Just the right length as well. The only issue I noticed is the ends did rip a bit when dried grass and mulch got stuck to it.
