  • Perfect for my horses!!
Style: Fence Charger
LOVE this! We needed a solar charger that we could use on our pasture since we don't have electricity run to our barn yet - this fit the bill! We ran 3 strands of Electrobraid poly rope on capped t-posts and grounded the EB using the recommended 3 copper rods and I couldn't be happier. My horses won't even get close to the fence. I did sit the charger outside for 3-4 days prior to using it - used my phone's compass to ensure it was pointing due south and I've not had an issue at all. It holds a charge VERY well, recharges well and does everything we need it to do! So glad I went ahead and "bit the bullet" and got a really nice solar charger! I also recommend the Parker Mccrory 00910 Anti-Theft Mounting Bracket if you are planning to mount on a t-post like we did. Super happy with this purchase!!! UPDATE: 12/5/2016 - This charger is just amazing! It is still registering strong and my horses have a great respect for the fence. About to put up another fence and will most likely use this same model again. Why pay for electricity when this will do the job? We are super pleased. ... show more

  • Bought my second one
Style: Fence Charger
I have been using my first Parmak SP12 for a year now, and it works flawlessly. Bought a second for another pasture. I'm keeping in 2,200 pound bulls with a single wire. I almost waited to buy a second one but then I read some of the reviews here and I had to agree that the one I have is the best fencer, solar or otherwise, that I have ever owned. Solar fencers are the way to go, I have leaned, even if you have electricity nearby. They are super-convenient to use and portable so you can take maximum advantage of rotational grazing. To give you an example of how well these work, I had to move a fence line the other night when a wire came out of the clip on one step-in post. I was on dry ground wearing rubber soled shoes, gloves and using a pair of pliers with insulated handles, and I STILL got bit enough to feel it when I attempted to grab the wire with the pliers to clip it back on the post. My advice is not to waste your time buying solar fencers from companies who developed them to hold in your dog or something. Buy from the company the large ranchers use - Parmak. By the way, there are other posts on pricing here that are old now. I checked extensively online and at brick and mortar stores, and this is the best deal I could find on this unit including shipping costs at the time this review is being posted. It beat my local farm store by $48 - including the shipping! ... show more

  • Poor product, poor service, read review for details.
Style: Fence Charger
I wanted to love this product. But, while it is reputed to have the power and maybe the battery life we need to keep our goats in, it fails on many levels. This product has a battery in it held in place by strips of cardboard. The battery blocks access to the mounting holes. The mounting holes are in flimsy sheet metal and the charger is very heavy. I can’t imagine it would work well - if you could get the mounting bolts and nuts to work with the improperly sized battery. Furthermore the battery can only be charged once discharged by leaving it in direct sunlight for 5 days while turned off, or by removing the battery and charging with a charger that is not included. I can see how it would work for people who own many of these, but if you only have one, it will be out of commission frequently to charge the battery. We opened it, discovered we would probably never be able to mount it or keep it in continuous operation, so we repacked and returned. And now Amazon is holding our refund for 8 days after receiving our return. I am disgusted with the product and Amazon. ... show more

  • Very pleased with quality, support, warranty, and operation. Excellent unit. No downside.
Style: Fence Charger
This charger was recommended by UVA in their how-to papers as a means of discouraging black bears from destroying bee yards. I can attest that it in fact does discourage black bears which have left my hives in peace the last two years. Amazon delivered the unit very quickly, the battery was pre-charged which ultimately saved the remnants of my yard from Yogi and Boo-boo. It has operated flawlessly for two years, it is able to hold charge from March thru December, and with a spare battery, I am able to bridge any gaps in charge. Batteries charge very easily. And last a long time in the unit when it gets shaded. After just under two years of operation, the charger stopped working, but the manufacturer stood behind the charger and fixed it for free. They returned the charger within a week. It was excellent service. There is a two year warranty, very generous given all the stuff that can happen. They also apparently service outside of warranty. Basically, this could be the last charger you own. Very pleased with quality, support, warranty, and operation. Excellent, excellent product. ... show more

  • good pruduct besides intitial concerns
Style: Fence Charger
I've had this fence charger for a year now. I am overall satisfied with it's operation. It's compact and free to use. Initially, I had issue with the battery keeping up. I did as the directions instructed and put unit out in the sun (OFF) for the recommended days to charge. I then began it's use. The battery (meter) was strongest when turned on and then quickly fell towards the red part of the meter, although it did stay in the green. It was checked it with the appropriate fence meter and it was putting out 5 KV. I kept using the unit as I needed protection around a bee yard. 2-3 weeks later as I was checking the yard I noticed that the meter was pegged at the highest level in the green. Checking it with the fence meter it was putting out 9.5K. It remains at this level today. Due to this yards location, I'm not there everyday so grass does creep up into the fence with no change to the 9.5K output. Some final thoughts on my initial issue, when the unit was shipped from Amazon, it was ON (clicking inside the box)So the battery was already down before I got it. I also could have had better luck if I had charged battery with AC adapter before use. Overall, I'm satisfied with this product. I wrote this review as I am here to purchase a second one for another location. Update Aug 2014, I have purchased three of these units so far. I now have 2 1/2! Not due to the product, one went through a wildfire. It looks terrible, and it still works!! I am totally satisfied with this fence charger. I have witnessed the charger keeping bears out of bee hives and elk out of fruit trees. Set it up and forget it. I find it rare that one product continues to preform from the first one bought to the most recent. I use these units for protecting bee hives, orchards and chicken coops. ... show more

  • Be Careful of Fraud
Style: Fence Charger
I think these powerpacks are supposed to be awesome -- I don't know yet because I was delayed a month in unwrapping my purchases and am only now putting the units out in the sun to charge them to get them installed. I bought two units. The first seems fine. The second unit, however (ordered at the same time) had some problems: when I opened the Amazon.com box, the Parmak box was upside down within the shipping box and had some dents on it. (The Amazon box was fine on the outside.) When I opened that box, the unit inside had scrapes on it, even though it was supposed to be new. When I picked it up, whatever is inside its metal shell, shifted up and down as if it didn't fit. (The first unit I ordered was snug and didn't show this behavior.) The manual that comes with the PowerPack has clearly already been read since it curls back. So... even though I purchased a new unit, I clearly have gotten a used one. And worse than that, it appears like someone opened the metal shell and replaced the innards with something else!!! I went onto the Amazon.com site to find out how to send it back for an exchange, but can only find a note telling me that I cannot return it because it is considered a hazardous material. I have searched on the site everywhere but cannot find a way to contact anyone to figure out what to do. On the other hand, sadly the delay in my opening means I am just over a month... and it does appear that the return policy should have been requested within the month. So... I wonder if the lack of buttons to be able to ask for an exchange is due to that fact, rather than that it is considered a hazardous material. So yes, I'm at fault for not having at least inspected it right away. But it's pretty unbelievable that they would not only ship me a used device, but one that has clearly been tampered with and is not the product that I originally ordered. I will be surprised if it works. :( ... show more
